How does Shadow Walk work?

Pretty basic question: How the heck does the spell Shadow Walk work?

I tried casting it with one of my older characters. It brought up a dialog box for me to select where I want to travel. But the only option was "No Choice."

My character has plenty of marked runes, so I expected that I would have to choose from one of those locations. But no such option appeared in the dialog box.

Anyone got a tip or two? Thirteen years after release and still learning.

Cast Mark Rune on a spot on the ground (where you want the teleport to land). A dialogue box should come up asking this "mark" for a name. Give it a unique name and save/close. Next time you cast Shadow Walk, you'll get a list to choose the destination (as in options along with that No Choice one).

Actual Runes in your PCs inventory are for old people behind the times! LOL.

Heh. Thanks Steve! I never doubted and oldtimer like you would come through for me.

Now what if a certain character is denied access to the "Mark Rune" spell? What then, hmmmm? Buy a wand?

The 'Mark Rune' spell does not work when cast on the ground.
Hasn't for months.

Sadly, I still need to use runes on my wizard.

I just used it today!

There is one issue, however, with it: you have to mark a Place the first time you log on, after a reset. If you log on/off or between Toons, it won't stick, the marking.

This is the culprit! Thanks Steve. I will try this out.

What Steve said. I just marked about 8 locations using scrolls, worked fine.

Well I stand corrected. Tested it using this 'first character that reset, no log out' trick and it worked!

Thank you gentlemen.

Now.. another question.

How do you get rid memorized locations? :D

Your PC should have gained a Manage Locations feat. Put that in the Hotbar—at least temporarily—click it and use it clean house.

As a follow-up question, is the Search skill still important for a successful use of Shadow Walk? Because the BG wiki adds this info to the spell description:

Instead of Search Skill as bonus to your DC check you can use your Concentration Skill if higher at a -4 value.

So is it adequate to simply rely on Concentration, since most casters invest heavily in that skill already?

in my experience with shadow walk i have never bothered with putting points in search as it seemed to make no difference, the random "fail" chance happens more often than with teleport (its possible to fail 10+ times in a row even if you beat the damn DC) so all in all sticking to teleport is the better option.
