Background:
William King is from the city of Neverwinter and grew up in a healthy home. His father and his fathers’ father were soldiers. He grew up learning the importance of service and protection of his people. When he was 18 he joined the city guard. Having been trained by his father the majority of his life, William was already a capable swordsman. He was noticed as being a soldier with a sound mind and the ability to carry out orders responsibly and dependably. He became well known for his fair judgment and his ability to remain calm under pressure.
Right around the time of his joining the Neverwinter Guard, his father, mother, and two sisters died of disease, leaving him as the last member of the King family.
William was the rank of a sergeant when a campaign started against orc tribes that were beginning to flush into the Neverwinter region. The orcs were massing in large numbers and were beginning to harass farmers and small villages through the land. Neverwinter deemed it necessary to dismantle the orcish front before they latched too tightly in the region. There were many months of small skirmish battles as Neverwinter soldiers would go out on patrols to help clear the orc infestation. William became distinguished in many of the battles that took place during the campaign.
In one of the worst encounters, a large scale battle ensued when a large number of Neverwinter soldiers responded to an orc attack on an outlying village. The orcs had anticipated their arrival. A well-organized ambush sent the men into disarray. As the battle ensued, Captain Winters, the leader of the Neverwinter strike force, ordered William to take his squad and reach the village as quick as he could to save the villagers while Captain Winters and the rest of the men confronted the orcish ambush.
He managed to gather his men and swiftly make the rest of the journey to the village. A second ambush laid in wait for them in the town, where all of the villagers had been brutally murdered. The Neverwinter soldiers fought back bravely, but were overwhelmed.
After an exhausting amount of time Captain Winters and the rest of the soldiers arrived and defeated the rest of the orcs. All of Williams’ men died in combat except for two. Among the dead were his best friends since childhood Lebert Timly and Josef Brine.
This experience changed William immensely. He was noticeably quieter and more contemplative from that time forward. One day on the streets of Neverwinter he heard a priest speaking of Lathander. He approached the priest and began learning more about Lathander and soon became a devouted follower of his doctrines and teachings. He felt like the doctrines of Lathander healed his heart. A focus on vitality, youth, self-perfection, and an appreciation for the beauties of life touched him. They re-energized his desires to serve those around him. Since he began his worship of Lathander, William King has never missed watching the sun rise at dawn.
Despite the strength he gained from worshipping Lathander, Neverwinter became a place of memories. Even though he loved the city with all of his heart, he began to feel distant from it. He felt that it was time for him to leave Neverwinter and venture out into the world. He requested Captain Winters to contact another organization along the Sword Coast that he could transfer to. Captain Winters sent off a letter to the Order of the Silver Rose, an organization that serves the people around the area of Baldurs Gate, requesting them to take William King into their ranks.
Packing just what he needed to successfully make the journey, William King set off from his beloved Neverwinter toward the area of Baldurs Gate.
Goals: To distinguish himself as a servant of the people and a protector
