Appearance

Jackard is a short and rather average-built human, now 44 years old. He has an attractive olive tone to his skin, expressing his Calishite heritage. He shaves his head clean, and grows a well-manicured beard or goatee of thick, curly, black hair. He wears his age well, only few signs of gray hair appear in his beard, even fewer wrinkles mar his face.

His smile is natural and nearly ever-present. His training in the mercantile trades as well as his bardic talents combine to create a very well-polished facade, seemingly both at ease and confident in appearance.

He tends to wear the finest clothing he can muster, often made of silks, rich textile work, and other expensive fabrics, sometimes purposefully juxtaposed with more rustic pairings like his bear-fur cloak or sturdy boots. He has a collection of headwear ranging from turbans and head-wraps, familiar to his Calishite roots, to more gaudy fashion of the north like his feathered hat.

Personality

Jackard is extremely intelligent, and tries his best to be charming and personable. He expresses himself well, with a large vocabulary and eloquent manner of speeach, and is known to strike up conversation with nearly anyone. This is often "dumbed down" when he is dealing with those he feels would hold his education and upbringing against him. He is a consummate deal-maker and diplomat. He is most happy when he and his clients are both earning coin. He values intelligence, but no more than he values great skill.

Those with neither skill nor intelligence, however, are most often those that try his patience. Especially so if they lack effort.

More privately, Jackard is a deep thinker and is curious about people and their interactions with others. He is sensitive (perhaps overly so) to asserted authority, especially that granted by nobility and other "unearned" rule. He tends to be more connected to the less fortunate, downtrodden, or looked over.

He has seen first hand what happens when those 'with means' are disconnected or apathetic toward those 'without means', and does not wish to see it repeated in his new homeland. He is a devout believer in Waukeen's teaching that commerce is the best way to improve society as a whole, and weaves that belief into his actions as often as he can.

Background

Born in 1314, the third son to an upper-class merchant family of Myratma in now war-torn Tethyr. His father, Haston Marks, a native of the city, and his mother, Najwa Pashar, a native Calishite from nearby Memnon, were wed in a somewhat scandalous union of two large trade families. Haston had amassed a great amount of wealth trading silk fabrics and other fine textiles through his company, Marks Mercantile, and owned a large collection of a great many magical artifacts.

Jackard was brought up in opulence, and was taught three things from an early age: the worship of Waukeen, the handling of the family business, and the footwork associated with "proper" rapier fighting.

Jackard was never destined to run the family business, however. Third born, he was meant for the church of Waukeen, but washed out of priestly training among the Goldeyes (yet remained a devout follower) early on in his studies. His life served more as a distraction for his parents and siblings than anything productive, as a regular in the high circles of the Tethyrian gala circuit, a companion to common folk and criminals, and a known face in festhalls in each major city. Jackard, early on, was a bit of a high-end wastrel, more concerned about pleasure and coin than anything of significance. It was during this time he learned bardic talents, and how best to use them to sway people, and move audiences.

By 1347, when the "10 Black Days of Eleint" occurred, Jackard was 33 and his parents were already long dead. He lost contact with his brothers that night. The middle Marks' son, Sayf, is presumed to have died a royal soldier in the conflagration that engulfed Castle Tethyr, where he was stationed, the first night. Jack's oldest brother, Haston II, a proud royalist who had inherited the family textile business, was confirmed dead by family hirelings - put to the sword early on as their estate was plundered. Haston II's family was presumed killed along with him. Before the initial wave of violence subsided, what remained of their family's holdings were either stolen or burned. Only Jackard remained, and with little to show.

Those events and the years following changed the man. Spending the next 7 years running small loads on caravans and merchant ships from port to port in Calimshan, Tethyr, and Amn, Jackard grew up quickly, and grew tired of the instability and treachery that is so common in the south. He arrived in Baldur's Gate in hopes to settle in, and return to a life of luxury.

Immediate Family
  • Mother: Najwa Pashar (Deceased)
  • Father: Haston Marks (Deceased)
  • Oldest Brother: Haston Marks II (Deceased)
  • Middle Brother: Sayf Marks (Presumed Deceased)
  • Cousin (one of several): Ahmet Pashar

Goals
Jackard's goals are generally tied to Rocky Creek Trade Company and the village of Greenest.
  • Build Rocky Creek's trade portfolio and holdings to such a level that it ensures a lasting legacy, and use that success to support causes the company believes in.
  • Continue to aid Queen Dharva, and maintain Greenest as a safe and welcoming home for trade. To that end Rocky Creek has strengthened walls, rebuilt gates, armed militia, aided in its defense many times, and brought trade and commerce in the form of the hin merchant.
  • Other, less public goals
