Background:
Daug'aonar (or rather, Daug) was one of those unfortunate Shebali (Commoner) drow consigned to live in the Darkwoods district among the rabble of non-citizens and outside the traditional power structures of Sshamath - and its protections. Life there was harsh and brutal, and frequently short. Daug is one of the survivors.

From an early age Daug ran with a street gang of other drow youths named the Darkclaws, the membership of which was constantly fluctuating. Different leaders rose and fell, but Daug, who was neither eloquent or a good reader of others, never aimed to be one of those. What he did have was a talent for violence and survival, which led him to make it through the constant infighting and grow into adulthood. He also developed an inculcated obedience to a female named Ulviiris, a bold and cunning fighter who gathered a faction around her to make herself leader of the Darkclaws.

Ulviiris grasped onto power with her skill at arms, her cunning ploys, her well crafted lies and her "beauty" (by the standards of the Darkwoods, at least!). She frequently spoke of moving on to better and greater things than the struggle for survival in Sshamath's ghetto, filling Daug's head with impossible ambitions. Daug was easy to manipulate with all these methods and developed a canine-like dependence on the gang boss. At the same time he began, like many Shebali, to look more favourably upon Lolth and her servants during the Illithilich's war on Sshamath and the appearance of Lolth's avatar.

Thus, when the Darkclaws shattered after a particularly brutal gangland conflict, Daug joined together with Ulviiris and two of her other lackeys as she went to seek work as a mercenary and bodyguard, hoping for work with one of Sshamath's schools. There was some success at this, with a contract being secured to guard a stubbornly isolationist Transmuter named Syrdaer Tlintyrr on his expeditions out into the wild. With steady work and coin, Daug's life took a turn for the better.

Of course, it was not to last. During one particular mission, Transmuter Tlintyrr wanted protection while he searched for a lost caravan that had been attacked on its way to the city. The caravan contained a magic item that he had been hoping to buy and he wanted to get it back. Nothing was as it seemed. Ulviiris had taken coin from one of Tlintyrr's rivals to lead the group to a pre-arranged place, where the "item" was in fact replaced with a large trap. She sent Tlintyrr and her comrades, including Daug, to inspect the item while she supposedly kept watch.

The explosion killed all but Daug instantly, but as always the little drow was hard to kill. Its not clear if Ulviiris knew the trap would be so devastating, or whether she thought it would only slay the Transmuter himself. In the event though, she told Daug the story that she had known of the trap but had thought it would hurt Tlintyr only, and expressed regret for putting the drow warrior in danger. Ulviiris was confident in her hold on Daug, so it was no doubt a surprise, when she went about looting the site, to find Daug's blade in her back.

Devoid of coin and allies, Daug attempted to find another mage or powerful person to act as a guard too. This turned into the start of his adventuring career, as he found participating on raids out into the wilds a good source of income, much better than being Ulviiris' lackey. With this wealth came better equipment, and the combat experience he gained the more status he earned. All of it was concentrated on Daug, no longer hiding behind a superior, and he became a frequent sight in Gloura's, hiding the fact that he was a Shebali from the Darkwoods.

During this period Daug made several contacts: some among the servants of Lolth; others among Bregan D'aerthe. Indeed, he signed up with Bregan for a time, as his fortunes waxed, and accompanied them on a number of missions as muscle. Daug was wealthy enough to purchase himself a slave called Ghha, a tanarukk used to aid in his bodyguarding missions. A poor judge of character, however, Daug misjudged how easy Ghha would be control, and the creature's disobedience became a constant source of anxiety for the drow, and the beast was nothing like a true slave, more akin to an unpaid servant or, perhaps, an aggressive pet.

Daug's trust in Lolth was slowly eroded as he began to learn more of mainstream drow society, and experience firsthand the destructive and duplicitous ways of Lolth's clergy. What had begun as doglike respect developed into a quiet resentment, that service in Bregan and interactions with a mysterious warlock named Tseara, and her dark magics, only stoked further. By the time Daug and Ghha went on a long caravan expedition towards Sschindylryn as guards, his faith was already wavering.

Daug returned without his pay and without his slave, and with a burning annoyance. He did not speak of what had happened out in the tunnels, only saying the caravan's journey did not end well and cursing the name of Ghha. Indeed, Daug frequently vowed to find the recalcitrant beast, for some reason. Yet he did not do it at once, as having lived the high life, he had incurred debts that he had hoped to repay after his return from the doomed expedition. Thus, he was forced to stay in the city and work those off, before disappearing once more in pursuit of the artistic tanarukk.

Strangely enough, it was the beast that came to him, before he could go in pursuit of it. What Daug and Ghha discussed when they met and where they both went, Daug does not talk about. All that can be said is that they both disappeared without word, Daug effectively resigning from Bregan Daerthe. Daug was not seen again for a long time, returning penniless, his arms and armour battered, and his mood sullen.

Once more he is seeking mercenary work.

Goals:
¤ Find allies in the City.
  • ¤ In particular find a patron/employer.
    • ¤ Part complete, now contracted to Conjurer Vesche, unclear how successful the arrangement will be.
¤ Sound out whether he is in trouble with Bregan for disappearing. Possibly re-joining them.
  • ¤ Complete. He is once again a Bregan mercenary, and walks now with appropriate swagger.
¤ Resolve his conflicted thoughts on divinity.
  • ¤ Having had lectures on Vhaeraun, Daug might be thinking about exploring this religion.
¤ Make money, and live the high life!
  • ¤ Work for Conjurer Vesche has been lucrative, and things are on the up with joining Bregan.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
¤ He might seem disinterested in religious RP but there is room for development, either towards Lolth, or towards Vhaeraun, or a more oddball choice.
¤ Daug has an odd mixture of accepting non-Drow as potentially skilled and reliable, having grown up in the Darkwoods, yet also jealously guarding his status as Drow. "At least I am Drow", is his common thought, when treated badly by superior drow. He is in essence conflicted on this point.
¤ Daug's loyalty is greater than many drow, but when it is broken, it is broken dramatically.
¤ Daug is quite proud of Sshamath. He also sees the pinnacle of power as being mages, having lived there all his life.
¤ He is very mercenary in his motivations, but he understands the need to do what you say you will do, to ensure being asked to work a second time. He is a diligent protector when hired.
¤ Daug is a bit mercurial in his dealings with females, distrusting them but desiring their approval.
¤ Who knows what happened to Ghha? Who knows what horrors they saw in the tunnels, or what wealth they lost? Did they blunder onto the surface or miraculously survive a fall off a ledge into the deep Underdark? Who knows? And who cares. Well, maybe if there is coin to recover.
