How Boys Become Friends
Background:
(1330 DR)
It was late summer when Taron Reynold's was born in the city of Silverymoon in the Silver Marches. There he grew up on the banks of River Rauvin where his father, Maros, served as captain of the house guard for House Thrumbold, and his mother, Saerah, served as a priestess in the Temple of Silver Stars.
He was somewhat precocious as a child, getting into all sorts of trouble. His mother would smile at his antics, but his father felt that the boy lacked discipline. So Maros began treating his son sternly and insisted that he be trained and disciplined as a warrior alongside the heir to House Thrumbold, Mikayl.
Mikayl and Taron were familiar with each other, as their two families had grown close over the years. Now, with their extended training time together and shared experiences in the House Thrumbold training yard, they became fast friends. The combination of Taron's nose for trouble and Mikayl's charming demeanor and social station led them to even more mischievious adventures with fewer repurcussions.
On the training field however, Maros was a harsh instructor. It was his goal that both boys become members of the Spellguard or the Knights in Silver, and he would constantly taunt them about how they needed to do better if they wanted to be taken seriously. Mikayl endured the abuse in stride, but Taron chaffed under his father's berating. After a few years of it, Taron could take no more and he ran away from home.
(1343 DR)
Taron was 13 at the time. His father did not know where he was and he began searching in earnest for the missing boy. But his mother Saerah knew exactly where he was, because he had taken refuge at the Temple of Silver Stars.
He was only at the temple for a week, but in that time he grew to love it there. His mother had taught him about Selûne, but he had never really been truly exposed to the works of the faith until that point. And there he learned that the Selunites weren't just clergy like his mother, but also warriors ... people who went out and actively searched out evil and battled it rather than sitting in cities waiting for evil to come to them. He felt like he had found a path that he could truly embrace.
After the week, Saerah brought Maros and Taron together. Maros was livid with the boy, and his mother. The discussion was heated, but Saerah eventually calmed everyone down with her usual calm demeanor, and an agreement was reached between the three. Taron would continue his training with his father, but he would also be allowed to serve in the temple.
Now that he had a purpose, Taron took his training more seriously. And after his weapons training sessions, when Mikayl would head off for arcane studies, Taron went straight to the temple. His faith and devotion grew daily and his mother would introduced him to the many other faithful Selunites who came and went from time to time. There he heard stories of their adventures and he dreamed of the day when he too would be able to fight against darkness and evil in the name of the Moonmaiden.
(1347 DR)
This went on for four years and Taron was very happy ... that is until the bethrothal. Not of Taron, but of his younger sister, Melony. She had recently turned 13 and now they were being told by their father that she was betrothed to none other than Mikayl.
Betrothals at that age weren't particularly uncommon, as they could last for years before an actual marriage occurred. But the way it was carried out led Taron to believe that his father's motivations for the betrothal were mostly self-serving and Taron was not happy about that at all. He could never prove it, but he suspected that his father had pushed for the union to strengthen his own ties to House Thrumbold and their resources.
But, being blissfully oblivious to the scheming, Melony seemed happy with the pairing. So Taron held his tongue. But the whole thing left him even further removed from his father than before and it drove a wedge between Taron and Mikayl as well. The two were still friends, but not nearly as close as before.
It was during this time that Taron learned to use formality to shield his true feelings. He had been instructed in proper etiquette alongside Mikayl, but to Taron it had simply been something one did when it was expected of him. Now he used it to disguise his feelings. He appeared to Maros to be a more dutiful and better son, but the man failed to realize that although Taron obeyed, it was out of spite rather than love. Saerah saw it though, and it made her sad, though she said nothing.
(1349 DR)
Two years later it was clear that Taron had no interest in pursuing a life with the Spellguard, despite his father's cajoling. Maros was displeased, but he took comfort in the fact that Mikayl was working hard towards that goal. Maros spent less and less time on his son, instead transferring his ambitions to his future son-in-law.
His father's absence was both a source of pain and a relief to young Taron. Taron hoped that they might be able to reconcile, if for no other reason than his mother and sister's happiness. But it wasn't long before Taron's life was turned upside down by his father's ambition once again.
Maros informed Taron that he had made an even better match for his son than he had for his daughter. Taron was to be betrothed to the youngest daughter of an even more influential family than House Thrumbold. The girl had an uncle who served in the Knights in Silver and Taron's father let slip that they could use that connection to get the knight to vouch for Taron.
Taron had no intention of going through with the marriage, but did not offer any objection, at least not until he met the girl in question.
She was nine years old.
He held his tongue until after the formal introduction was over, his mask of formality firmly in place. Then, after they had returned home, he and his father had a fight unlike any before. Maros screamed how Taron was selfish, a dreamer, with his head on the moon when it wasn't buried in his ass. This was for the family and he must do his duty. Taron in return accused his father of selling children into slavery, of base ambition and manipulation for his own self interest and that he should be ashamed of himself. The confrontation ended when Maros punch Taron with a closed fist and Taron left his home for good.
Taron stayed at the temple for a few months, preparing himself to formally enter the clergy. His mother attempted to heal the rift between Maros and Taron, but neither would speak of the other. After taking his vows, Taron took his leave of his mother and the temple to wander the lands, spreading the teachings of the church of Selûne and seeking to defend the oppressed where ever he could.
(1353 DR)
Taron eventually arrived in Baldur's Gate, and for the first since leaving Silverymoon the urge to wander left him. He began to acquaint himself with the surrounding lands and soon joined the Halls of Light as a priest, then shortly after was admitted to the ranks of the Silverstars of Selune.
As a Silverstar, Taron takes his duties to serve Selûne very seriously. As a result, he has fallen back on his formality as a way to show respect for the office he fills and for those around him. That formality also allows him to present a more law-abiding persona to the world. But under that facade he could care less about the law and is more concerned with justice and right.
In the beginning, he was unsure of what the Moonmaiden desired of him in his new role as a Silverstar. It was not until he met Rania Arowaven that he believed he found his true calling. She was a feisty and opinionated fellow selunite who he soon learned was willing to risk everything in the service of others and to fight evil. He now believes his duty is to protect her until she can fulfill the destiny that Selûne has prepared for the priestess, no matter the cost to himself.
