”Fair Winds and Following Skies”
The words of the Halruaan House motto, scribed in gold, adorn the bottom of the heraldry. Violets and Golds adorn the symbol, with a purely white Albatross depicted in flight. Heraldic symbols made in Halruaa change as the symbol moves, as if the Albatross is truly flying.
To understand Maurmeril, one must first understand what it was she was born into. House Jvianin of Halruaa is well known throughout the Arcane Nation, as potent craftsmen and shipbuilders of none other than the famed Skyships that roam the skies above. Though not the only builders of the famed Skyships, they are the most popular, affording the family gains in wealth, popularity, and most importantly, political power.
As of 1352, over two hundred individuals proudly recorded the name Jvianin in the aristocratic census. The recognized head of the house, Tzonan Jvianin, was Maurmeril’s Great Great Uncle, and from him, her name could be found, tracing through the line of Hoste, his sister Aithe, Hoste’s nephew, Matteon, as his fourth child. Blood and position within this family tree gave way to prominence and luxury, so much so that even the most distant cousins enjoyed a life of relative luxury when considering the rest of Toril.
Maurmeril was raised in luxury by Halruaan standards; her father was a lead shipbuilder of the family, her mother a potent merchant of shipboard goods and services - namely very exotic magical items that complimented Skyship yachts of the gentry. With three older siblings, two brothers and a sister, Maurmeril was well aware as she came of age that she need make a name of herself; in the meantime, she enjoyed a pampered lifestyle, spending the hotter months of the year at her Family’s home in Halagard, and the cooler but warm months of winter at her home in the capital, Halarahh.
Matteon bid his daughter pursue whatever she liked – as a youth, she would spend time at the Jvianin Dry Dock in Halagard, watching as her family and those under their employ repaired and upgraded Skyships; she oft took rides on the families private yacht, the Skyship Daraghost, travelling about Halruaa to all four corners and visiting family and friends of the family along the way. Becoming literate at an accelerated and early age, she enjoyed the massive libraries that her family had on offer, finding an escape in books both fictional and not. At five years of age, Maurmeril was accepted into the Youth’s Academy of Halarahh, nestled in the Arbor Square for gifted students who have tested for ability to learn the arcane. As with most of her family and many of the people about her, Maurmeril had an aptitude for the Arcane.
Excelling in the Youth Academy, Maurmeril scored high marks throughout. The girl was interested in the Netherese, the history of Halruaa, Skyships and their impact (certainly influenced by her family), and The Planes. As her education propelled her forward, she was also taught the proper functions and conduct of Halruaan Nobility, taking great pains to understand the truly strange and time-consuming customs of the noble life in Halruaa. At the age of 11, she scored at near perfection when taking the entrance exam into The Academy of the Arcane surpassing her older brother Aldyn and even her father Matteon. The young Maurmeril was accepted into Mount Talath, the most prestigious of the Arcane Academies.
It was from here that life would change for young Maurmeril. As a student, she surpassed the expectations of her instructors and always yielded good comments from them . . . but as an arcanist, she was leaving much to be desired for Halruaan standards. Her family unknowingly stifled her progress by pushing the academy to focus on the school of Transmutation – those that tutored her knew that the girl turning young woman through the years was far superior in Conjuration. This, however, mattered not. Toting a name like Jvianin got you exactly what you wanted, as there was too much political interference that could come otherwise.
As a student of knowledge, Maurmeril was one of the top performers, oft spending time in the libraries afforded her, writing and arguing theses with upper classmen, and challenging herself on writing assignments and presentations. The world of academia was a fit for the young woman – but alas, the Arcane Academy was concerned with Arcane ability. Approaching the final year of her studies, Maurmeril was proficient with the First circle of magic, while her fellow students were pressing into the third. This did not bode well for her – the once happy times spent at home during breaks throughout the year were now dreaded times and eventually non-existent ones – for her final year, the family did not permit her leave Mount Talath.
All that was needed to graduate the Arcane Academy was Acceptable ability in the first circle of magic, with higher marks for higher circles, along with a final research paper and project that took up much of the students’ time. The young woman focused her paper on the relationship between an arcanist and those they summon from the planes, making an argument that with better treatment and considerations could come stronger and more powerful bonds. It was an exceptional piece for a Conjurist . . . Maurmeril was under and recognized as a Transmutist. Needless to say, as the graduates were named and their marks issued, the young woman earned what was equivalent of Average. She returned home a disgrace, and unbeknownst to her, her family was going to rid of such a poor stain to their name.
In secret, elders of the House met and struck the name of Maurmeril Jvianin from the Aristocratic Census – she would no longer gain the benefit of the name and the positional authority of which it held. This came not only because of shame, but fear of what Maurmeril’s marks could impact – the Jvianin product, the doubt of investors, and the gain of competitors. Hoste was not completely and totally cruel by Halruaan standards – in the least, he would at least make the girl think she intended to take a Teleportation Circle to a place of her choosing to conduct her own research. In reality, the master of Enchantment had all but tricked Maurmeril, using his arcane abilities to brainwash the idea of leaving for Baldur’s Gate and conducting research for a very long time. For all intents and purposes, the young woman was to be banished, a forgotten thought, a narrow avoidance of a tarnished record. Not only was she in ways brainwashed, but in others stripped of her memory. Fearing that information vital to their productions might slip out beyond the walls of Halruaa, the Jvianins wiped her memories clean of any information they deemed a trade secret.
It is for this reason that Maurmeril now finds herself alone, with new goals and a new life ahead of her. Thousands of leagues away from home, perhaps never to see her family again, she was not completely controlled in her maneuvers – no, there was now a certain freedom in escaping the stringent control the Jvianin’s had over her – as she found her way through the streets of a city more populous than any she could even imagine, the young woman’s mind was racing, and a plan began to develop.
In her first few tendays, the woman has faced trials and troubles for her past, her status as a member of the gentry, and faced the violence that has plagued the region - something almost completely nullified back home. In this time, she has discovered the mission and purpose of Candlekeep - and it allies with her views on knowledge to the point that she has made the effort to become an Acolyte, now in service of the Fortress Library.
