Distinguishable TraitsEmerald green eyes with golden pupils, a GLORIOUS mustache and muttonchops and a red gemstone sun symbol embedded in his forehead.
-Appearance-
Barristan is a middle aged man, perhaps old by Faerunian standards but he does not show it as much as one might expect of a man his age. His most notable features to the common onlooker would be his glowing golden pupils that appear to stare through people rather than at them. Coming in a close second is a small golden sun which appears to be implanted into his forehead, but to those who've known him for some time would be aware it covers up a gemstone from his past. Almost everything about his appearance is payed attention to and groomed, for to him one of the easiest distinctions between a man of worth and a peasant is simply how they care for their own hygiene. This attention to physical presentation extends to his clothing and attire with his 'casual' wear being made of fine imported cottons from places like Thay and his armor and more formal attire being emblazoned with gemstones to an almost gaudy extent.
-Personality-
A former lifelong Banite, Barristan still holds a very strict sense of seriousness to him. While he appears willing to display a bit more emotion in current days than previously, he is still very much an emotional brick wall compared to a common individual. Raised and trained all his life to be a cold, calculated, and ruthless leader, he is not someone that will lose his temper easily, at least he wont display such. One aspect of his personality that has never wavered however is his detest for chaos, a trait that appears to control every fiber of his being.
-Family-
Father: Althizar Schulltze - Deceased
Mother: Mistila Shulltze - Elderly and frail, Mistila has been bedridden for about a year now.
Sister (Middle): Yevrita Torthul - Married off to a wealthy smith (Kharish Torthul)
Brother (Youngest): Leopold Shulltze - Current head of household back in Teshwave
-Younger years-
Born and raised in the small trading city of Teshwave in the southern Dales, Barristan was the first born son of a wealthy textile merchant. For the most part, Barristan lived an uneventful childhood spending his time attending school, playing with his siblings, and only staying up past his bedtime to attend services at the local Banite temple at midnight. Barry was always interested in the fancy fabrics his family shipped in from distant shores and spent many free days attending the family warehouse, ordering his family's servants to make him fine clothes out of his favorite textiles. While it would normally be expected that the snobby rich child would be the resident bully of the city, Barristan was born with strange ancestry, his golden pupils both scaring other children as well as drawing the ire of some adults. This prejudice due to his odd features slowly over the course of many years worked it's way into his psyche, to Barry, a child raised under the faith of Bane, all those others fearing him was not a curse but a blessing.
-Adulthood Pre-Sword Coast-
In Banite controlled lands, it is not unexpected of truly faithful families to send off their first born sons to the Church as a true display of their family's devotion, and the Schulltze family was truly devote. On his thirteenth birthday, when finally considered an adult, Barristan was shipped off to the House of the Black Lord in Mulmaster in order to undergo the rites of the clergy of Bane. For many years he served as a slave of the Church, a state which he loathed but had no control over. It was during his time as a slave that he truly learned that even those born of power are nothing but slaves and servants of the gods, and that Bane is the one true god that will stand above all others. As the years went on, Barristan advanced through the lower ranks, passing his trials and advancing to the rank of Watchful Brother by the age of eighteen. His bloodline however did not make his time withing the church an easy one, for where the peasants back home feared him for being different, the educated clergy knew him for what he was, a celestial tainted individual. While a pure blooded Zhent may be viewed with respect among the clergy, Barristan was viewed as dirt by the higher ranking clergy, every lesson and trial provided to him made significantly more difficult. While a weaker willed individual may have been broken by this treatment, Barristan embraced the hate and brought it inward using it to fuel his ambitions and desires to subjugate those that would impede his path to power.

Eventually Barristan was sent back across the Moonsea to the lands of the Black Network in Zhentil Keep. While the Zhentarim and Church of Bane were different organizations, they shared a common goal and focus. Having such a strong working relationship, it was common for young clergymen to be shipped off to aid the Zhentarim in their exploits, ensuring that Bane remains the one true god over the organization. For years Barristan worked alongside the Zhentarim, offering minor clerical services to the soldiers in distant lands until finally being sent off to the Sword Coast where he was tasked with establishing the will of Bane and supporting Lord Chembryl's forces in Darkhold.
-Future Goals-
- Spread the knowledge of his (heretical) faith and through it, spread the desire for a stable order across the lands.
- Establish a legal office with Baldur's Gate from where he can provide legal aid in both the judicial as well as contractual variety.
- Repair his reputation and standing along the Sword Coast and perhaps one day get a position where he can aid in lawmaking.
-Plot Hooks-
- As an ex-Banite and former high ranking cleric, some Banite loyalists may seek his head for turning away from the faith.
- As a faithful of a heretical sect, it is expected the church of Lathander might have some strong "opinions" about Barristan's actions and faith.
- Having a fairly strained relation with the government of Baldur's Gate, mending relations will be a difficult challenge for some time.
-Celestial Ancestor-
Malchediel, a throne archon who's bloodline is many centuries diluted before showing itself within Barristan. While fully aware of his celestial blood, Barristan is unaware of from what celestial he descends from.
Heirlooms:
-Tyrant's Gemstone-
A gemstone that was embedded into Barristan's forehead upong becoming an ordained priest of Bane. While the gemstone displayed his status as a priest of Bane, it low lays dormant since Bane's death and has been masked by a golden sun symbol.

-Magistrate's Fasces-
A ceremonial heirloom battle-axe that always hung over the Shulltze family hearth. Said to be a mark of status from a distant anscestor, Barristan has kept it as nothing more than a decorative piece.

-Shulltze Family Signet Ring-
A signet ring depicting the crest of Barristan's family, a black eagle over a half purple half white background with a single small green gemstone for an eye.

Religious beliefs and views of other Gods:
Patron Deity

Image
Amaunator
(Risen Sun Heresy)
Image
The Eternal Sun, a god lost and forgotten in time, but one Barristan has stumbled upon during the Time of Troubles during his research into a new faith. A god of true Law and Order, one that does not let morality or ambition cloud his judgement. Even though long "dead", Amauantor greatly appealed to Barristan, enough so that he began to try and connect dots with a theory of why the Sun still remains but Amaunator does not. This lead him to believing that all the various Sun gods across the Realms are indeed all Amaunator, and Lathander is his current name among Faerun. A name one day he'll shed when mortals are worthy of a true utopia of order.

Thoughts on other Gods

Image
Bane
Image
As one would expect of a former high ranking clergyman of the Black Lord Bane, Barristan use to be extremely strict in his following of the Dogma of the Dread Lord. He thought anyone that serves a god other than Bane is simply inferior. Bane's word was law in Barristan's eyes, to oppose Bane's will was to condemn one's soul to oblivion and it was Bane who would one day unite the world under his authority and bring true order to the realms.

However after Bane's fall at the hands of Torm, and the immediate display of frailty and chaos among the former Banite ranks Barristan immediately lost all faith in the Tyrant. For decades he preached through service and loyalty one could achieve power, and that power would one day unite all Faerun. The desire for unity and order lead Barristan down a path of evil, but that unity and loyalty among the faith shattered the instant Bane died. Now Bane is nothing but a cautionary tale for Barristan, an example of what happens when ambition becomes blinding.

Image

Image
Myrkul
Image

Barristan does not enjoy undead, nor does he condone it's uses. However his view was that way for one reason; the Dead belonged to Myrkul, and to manipulate the dead was to steal from Myrkul. Myrkul's domain was the dead, this alone is the reason Barristan did not so much care for Myrkul one way or the other, to him Myrkul was a force that should be given a wide birth to do their own business. While Bane would one day rule the living, Myrkul ruled the dead. However with the passing of the Dead Three, Myrkul is nothing but a name in the wind to Barristan.

Image

Image
Bhaal
Image
While Bane ruled the living, and Myrkul ruled the dead, Bhaal was the harbinger between the two. For this reason alone Bhaal had Barristan's respect. Barristan did not view Bhaal as the god of 'murder' but of death itself, murder to Barristan is nothing more than a cowardly crime. While Bhaal likely would have become a distant memory much akin to Myrkul, Barristan was at the Boareskyr Bridge to witness Bhaal's death. Witnessing the death of a god, is something only a tiny fraction of mortals have ever been able to experience and for that reason alone Bhaal remains engraved in Barristan's mind.

Image

Image
Lathander
Image
Barristan believes Lathander to be nothing more than a facade, a temporary disguise used by Amaunator to lead Faerun to a new path after the fall of the ancient empires. That said, it's a facade Barristan is willing to respect, if his true god wishes to use such a mask to help guide a "new Faerun" back to stability then Barristan will support that goal.

Image

Image
Kor
Image
One of the most interesting gods Barristan has come across, and one who's teachings Barristan has taken to heart. "Old Kor the Venerable" he's called, and one of the various gods of the Sun that Barristan believes to be an aspect of Amauanator. Old Kor teaches that leaders should be wise, and that wisdom comes from age, but also mistakes. As someone who has nearly 50 years of mistakes in his past, Kor's teachings have firmly cemented themselves in Barristan's faith.

Image

Image
Horus-Re
Image
The third of the Sun gods that Barristan believes to be an aspect of Amaunator, there is not much to say about Horus-Re, as he maintains a very similar outlook to that of Amaunator. What puzzles him however is the fact that Amaunatori use to war with the faithful of Horus-Re, a puzzle he seeks to find an answer to.

Image

Image
Jergal
Image
Previously Barristan thought Jergal was weak, a frail old man that served no purpose anymore. However due to recent events Barristan's view has shifted. At his current age, Barristan is old (by Faerunian standards...) and with that age he's come to understand Jergal's desire to rest. For years Barristan sat in a high stress position leading various individuals he needed to bring under his heel, but now that he's free of that stress he has come to respect Jergal's desire to essentially retire from godhood.

Image

Image
Chauntea
Image
At one point in his life Barristan thought the Great Mother was nothing but a peasant's god. However, after Bane's death Barristan started researching all of the gods who's teachings were kept away from him during his time in Bane's Church. An interesting goddess in his eyes as she holds no ambition for power, and yet she remains one of, if not the most powerful god among Faerun.

Image

Image
Helm
Image
Barristan has an odd view of Helm, he once thought Helmites were weak and spineless. To him, Helm was the god of those who understand the need for order but are too weak to assert authority to control it. He thought anyone that worshiped Helm would never find success and power. However the Time of Troubles provided Barristan with a new view and respect for Helm, he was the only god so dedicated to order that he remained in position, even going so far as to strike down another god to maintain said order. That said, Helm remains a guardsman to Barristan, while now he respects the god his own personal goals reside in lawmaking not lawkeeping.

Image

Image
Torm
Image
A god that Barristan once thought of as nothing more than a joke, Torm immediately became apparent to Barristan as one might expect. Barristan detests Torm, not because he killed Bane, but instead because in Barristan's eyes he's the same as Bane and denies it. A god who deems his own personal views and bias are the best for everyone and therefore has his faithful enforce his will upon others. He is simply the "Gold Plated Tyrant" to Barristan.

Image

Image
Tyr
Image
Similar to Torm, Barristan hates Tyr, a god who claims to be of Order and Law, but instead rules by his own moral code. Barristan does not respect Tyrran authority in law, as no judge can truly fulfill their purpose if they hold a moral bias.

Image

Image
Hoar
Image
An interesting god for Barristan and the god he prays to the most currently besides Amauantor, he views Hoar as the "Spirit of the Law" where as Amauantor is the "Letter of the Law". A god who enacts justice not based off a moral code, but based off law itself. In Barristan's eyes Hoar is the true Judge of Faerun, as Hoar's judgement is brutal but unbias unlike that of Tyr.

Cyric

A child, what more is there to say?...
