Behold;  a  mask  hath  tricked  thy  sight!
Fooling    thee   with  exquisite   grimace:

Fiercely   affected,   true   self   revealed
before thine eyes whence prior concealed

Wax-lacquered parchment,  charcoal infused, soon makes an appearance throughout the city of Baldur's  Gate;
first seen amidst the Palace District's upper-class and spanning further thereafter across the Sword Coast. Bold
letters  bear  news of what's to come,  proudly  declaring:  MASQUERADE.  Dated late in Marpenoth,  aught  of
cloth, sateen or velvet must match theme, desaturated, and be paired with a mask, artfully inspired.

What begins as rumor amidst the Palace District's upper-class is later confirmed by official announcement:
Oona Siofra, Assistant Director of the White Mask, has joyously accepted the theater's Director position, offered in full.

During the morning of 14 Marpenoth, a large blue tent is being set up on the farmlands of Baldur's Gate, near the road where the merchant caravans usually pass on their way to the busy city.

A wide and sturdy merchant stall is being set up next to the tent, while the entrance of the tent is shaded with a purple shine curtain of beaded pearls. Through the shadows of the curtain, quiet chanting can be perceived from time to time, or fleeting flashes of colorful lights. Outside the tent, a strange looking elf with reddish orange hair hammers the finishing touches to the stall and a wooden board with a less than enthusiastic expression on his face.

Any passing merchant would be invited in to the tent with sweet words and a glass of wine by the soft voiced mistress of the tent, requesting to have a first look at their goods before they set up their stalls in the city.

During the day, the wooden board is set out near the gate, with the following lines written upon it:

Crafting of wands and pre-ordered magical items at the fairy tent!
Buying uncommon spell scrolls and gems!
At the same place, looking for scouts and bodyguards!

The next line is written with a different handwriting:
At the same place, free exotic massage for beautiful women!
The last line is crossed out several times.

Regardless the commotion around it's setup, the large tent and the merchant stall stands alone and empty for the following few days, like it's owner was swallowed by the earth itself.

After being turned away from the Starfall party at the Darius Estate due to he affiliations with the Zhentarim, Marietta Starling left with the group of four she entered with. They proceeded to find an alcove in the Palace Distract and make their own fun with a crate of wine, drinking games, entertaining stories, and the mysterious appearance of a severed head. Even that did not put a damper in their spirits. They lingered at their outdoor gathering well into the evening and were even joined by another friend before finally dispersing with fond farewells and much laughter.

In the wake of the uptick in criminal activity, a Knight of the Radiant Heart, Aaron Lyonaler, when not on the war front can be seen in the open air bar area of the Eastern District. He sips at water, reading through a little black leather book containing stratagems and tactics used in battles past. When not reading and simply being a presence, he scan the area watching who passes by and where they travel to and from.

... given the recent upswing in robberies, a slender looking elf wearing a blue hooded cloak would likewise be seen visiting a certain locale in the East Gate, and on a near daily(and/or nightly) basis. Although he does not enter the premises, the elf would be sure to linger outside and close to the door of the orphanage, for hours on end at times even. He seems especially attentive towards the safety of any children leaving or arriving, and, in spite of the typical aloof manner he might be known to possess, would patiently engage any youngsters who spoke to him.

In the moments between, however, the blue-cloaked elf would be seen to recline back against the wall, his hooded gaze sweeping the area somewhat intently. Anyone passing by that even remotely looked like a ruffian would inspire a dark look from him, while his gloved hands would immediately fold behind his back, and under his cloak. In any such instances, the elf would simply offer a cold stare, his facial expression seeming to imply that any trouble started near this place, regardless of who brought that trouble, would be an extremely bad idea.

If anyone were to ask him if he was involved with the newfound initiative, or neighborhood watch, the elf would reply in a decidedly flat tone...

"No... I've no interest in shameless opportunism, or socializing around recruitment tables in very populated, and well guarded squares."

Image

... a new notice would also appear on the board in the East Gate, written in common, and in a flowing script...

A day or two passes, and the blue-cloaked elf continues to quietly make his rounds at the orphanage, typically once or twice per day, and perhaps even a few times during the night.

Any passerbys wandering past might hear the elf regaling the orphans with fantastical tales, such as
"... the time a Draco-Lich landed in the elven village of Doron Amar..." (the typically blunt elf being, perhaps unsurprisingly, rather candid about the details of the battle with an undead dragon), while other times he might softly murmur words of advice to the children...

"... if you see a group of rough looking strangers coming close, be sure to move quickly inside, and tell the Caretakers to lock and bar the door."
The hooded elf would speak in a firm tone at first, then he would lightly wag his thin, gloved finger.
"No heroics... and make no rude gestures at them either. Do this, and I'll be sure to tell you of the time I met, and spoke with, an actual living great white. Before it tried to eat me whole, that is."

The elfs thin brows would lift then towards the orphans, as if he was confident in the carrot dangled, before he pulled a necklace bearing an ovoid medallion from his pocket and wandered inside to speak with the aforementioned Caretakers...

... an amulet of sending, and his name, would be left with them.

The following day...
DM Chant wrote: Sun Nov 10, 2019 5:57 pm Two ragged, dirty young ruffians might have been seen fleeing from the vicinity of the Ilmateri orphanage toward the eastern gate. The bigger of the two might have been heard snickering, "That was way too easy!" while his smaller compatriot staggered along after him, barefoot, sneezing, and gaunt.
A certain blue-cloaked elf, who had been frequenting the area near the orphanage the past few days, might be seen wandering up the same street not long after. A hint of a smirk would crease the elfs lips under his hood as he squinted after the youths...

"... not the worst way to lose ten gold. A shame they didn't stay for some of Sylvi's potat-... what was it, 'tato? No, 'tater, soup."

The elf would otherwise seem unconcerned as he veered off in the direction of the market, tsk'ing lightly to himself as he went...

The refugees camping at the outside of the eastern gate often see a tall young woman with green skin and long redhair.

She carries goods bought at the market, and blankets and give them to the women

In what seems possibly like some manner of deja vu for long time residents of the city. . .

A red-garbed blonde man has been seen regularly acting as a sentry at the Ilmateri temple. His rounds often take him to look over the Orphanage as well. He maintains enough distance to keep an eye on the broader surroundings of both places. Periodically, he can be found inside the Temple, reading, a break from his watch perhaps, or maybe a more subtle one guarding the interior.
