DM Rumours of Amn

Unread post by DM Protector »

Being along the route of the Trade Way, many rumours that flow out of Amn quickly become the main point of a conversation of those within the lands of Baldur's Gate.

[Rumors of Nashkel]

Image

A dark cloud of smoke can be seen in the horizon while glancing at the sea, not far from Nashkel. There are rumors in taverns from the drunkards about some god wraths, dragons, and also about a giant smoking from a pipe in a rowboat. No one seem to know for sure what happened there, but the smoke lasted a good part of the day.

In the streets of Nashkel, people are stressed. The military from Amn seems to get organised.

A large group of adventurers led by the paladin of Torm Aranath have been seen entering the city and exchanging words with the Nashkel soldiers.

While walking in town, one could hear a few things.

"They didn't do this. Why would the fist burn down a village? It makes no sense!" One says.

"Oh, we all know they did it." Says another.

"Our forces are gathering and we're not even sure if..."

[Rumors from Nashkel]

A new governor in town!

Image

Rumors spread about Gilberto Gerrerro, the new millitary governor sent directly from Athkatla whom arrived just in time to greet the Amnian embassador back in Nashkel. The man is said to be a patriot, hard on his men, but wherever he went in the past, he succeeded. He can be seen walking in town sometimes accompanied by the Mayor Ghastkill, speaking of the town's defences. Other times, he's supervising the construction of some more defences on the northern borders of Nashkel, facing to Beregost and Baldur's. And when he's not busy doing that, he can be seen speaking loudly and firmly to groups of Amnian soldiers, who seem to grow more and more in numbers around Nashkel.

"I will not accept weaklings in the ranks of the great Amnian army! I will not accept fear, disobedience, and maggots! Those of you who'll fail to reach the standards I seek in a soldier, will be sent back in the mountains without being paid! WE are the wall that protects our great nation, WE are the men standing near the mountains, ready to give our lives for our familliy back in Amn! WE are Nashkel, and we'll be keeping war far from Amn! WE will stop it right here, if it ever comes! Train hard, soldiers! Because your own life depends on how hard you trained!"

Some citizens of Nashkel, despite the portents of war on their door, send out runners and messengers of all sorts to investigate the rumors of where the Ironfaar Dwarves now reside.

With well wishes, tidings, and prayers to the dwarves they runners state Nashkel offers what aid they may to the clan that helped them through the N.T.E. to rebuild their own walls. Learning that it was none other than the Duegar who put the stalwart craftsmen in their current situation, many of the younger citizens formerly smitten with dwarven humor and "charm" look for venues for paying the dark dwarves back. Some speaking with the N.T.E., others the adventures guild about the planned forays into the mine.

A loud horn echoes from the slick pass of the Cloud Peaks mountain. As the citizens of Nashkel look to the south upon hearing the sound ringing in their ears, their sights soon fall upon the many banners of Amn that are lifted high into the air amongst the many troops that descend down the pass towards the small town. The stomping of feet, combined with the clanking of armour, eminates from within the two thousand strong contigent approaching the gate of Nashkel.

"Open the GATE!", yells out one of the town guards. Men and women gather on the side of the road as the army rolls into the town, shields sturdy, weapons unsheathed. As the armed forces pass by, the citizens of the town stare both in awe and of shock. Several caravans then follow the soldiers into the city, as they begin to set up tents. Siege weapons are brought in last, escorted by simply more armed forces. Trebuchets and catapults are led to advantageous positions, looking over the valley that lies between Nashkel and Beregost.

The troops go no further, as they begin to set up camp in the northern town.

Ten thousand soldiers, at least, make Nashkel their new home. In the southern foothills, just beyond the city walls, lies a growing camp that is being constructed. Many tents are set up, with soldiers walking through the streets, heavily armed. The size of this army is easily seen by any who pass through Nashkel.

New siege weapontry is set up throughout the town, as tents find themselves rising in every available nook and cranny that one will fit. Amn's army has now fully arrived to the border, staring across from the Baldur's Gate army positioned in Beregost.

Reports come in that the Amnian troops in Nashkel are increasing in activity. Their siege weaponry is undergoing inspection. Their forge fires burn brightly day and night. Spies say that the Amnian officers are now meeting almost constantly. The Amnian soldiers seem even more restless than they were before.
It seems that the Amnians are going to make their move soon.
The Flaming Fist prepare themselves.

[Rumours of Amn]

Strange news blows north to Nashkel and beyond. The town that has become ubiquitously known in the south for sparking the Amn-Gate conflict is once more on everyone's lips. One year after the assassination of Lord Mortimer and the ensuing massacre of much of the population, Markhold has again been attacked. This time, however, a well-rehearsed defence was enacted and the attackers were soundly repelled. The only reported casualties are three Amnian soldiers and a local farmer, all killed.

The circumstances of the attack remain mysterious, as do the culprits. A Baldurian emissary was dispatched to Nashkel the very next day to pre-empt any political misunderstanding. The Amnian garrison at Markhold has been bolstered and - if you believe it - a Cowled Wizard has been sent to investigate. All of the attackers managed to escape, but there is apparently blood at the scene that may assist in scrying.

The locals defiantly claim that this failed attack merely confirms the unfaltering resiliance of the town.

[Rumours Around Nashkel]

There is much talk around Nashkel concerning an execution earlier today. Five men were speared to death for murder, banditry, impersonation of Amnian soldiers, and actions to incite political strife on foreign soil. Rumour has it these men were responsible for the recent attack on the town of Markhold, and were also involved in the bloody fight that occurred outside the lighthouse south of Candlekeep. The men were said to be the ringleaders, but there is speculation that more of the bandits are still at large.

Members of the Black Briar Company, a mercenary group based in Athkatla, are credited with capturing the men and are said to have been rewarded with a generous bounty.

[Rumours of the South]

The war camps around Nashkel lie abandoned and disused as the majority of the Amnian army now spreads across the country's southern border. For the last couple of months, rumours have drifted north from Tethyr, carried by a steadily growing trickle of refugees. They speak in hushed tones of terrible violence and bloodshed, political upheaval and war. However, the true horror of the Ten Black Days of Eleint is only now becoming apparent. Somewhere between the hyperbole of the living and silence of the dead lies the truth. It seems that there may have been few exaggerations after all.

Hundreds have been murdered. Almost all of the country's landed and titled nobles have been killed; some burned alive in their mansions, others dragged through the streets and beheaded by the mobs, and some drowned in the River Ith. In the aftermath of the Ten Black Days, the violence has become less discriminatory as order and governance have broken down. Though the words "civil war" have been used, there are yet few consistent rumours of discernable factions competing for control. It is rumoured, however, that some noble families of note have escaped into Amn alongside other refugees fleeing the violence, and that they are hunted even in exile.

Most refugees are stopped near the border and rounded up by the Amnian army, before being contained in camps. A couple of small camps also dot the north of Amn, with some refugees apparently making it as far as the southern slopes of the Cloudpeaks. None are yet known to have made it through the pass to Nashkel or beyond. Some people say the Council of Six is more concerned with containing the refugees than protecting them from brigands and the beasts of the wild. Conditions are said to be terrible, with some dying in the camps from disease. Some camps have been attacked by monsters, and one camp in the north is rumoured to have disappeared completely in very mysterious circumstances.

Despite the opacity of rumour and hearsay, one thing is increasingly clear to all: the troubles in the south are far from over.

[Rumours Around Nashkel]

The entire remaining garrison of Amnian soldiers in Nashkel mobilised outside the barracks today. They wore their uniform armour and their packs were heavy, but with minimal armaments beyond the short swords strapped to their waists. In place of spears and bows, the company instead brandished shovels, hammers and axes. On the road at their backs awaited wagons piled high with timber, brick and thatch. Legionnaire Miraz Castilla himself headed up the company, but even he showed utmost deference and respect when the woman arrived.

With hair as dark as her fine dress, Isabella Beninio walked the lines, inspecting the troops. There had been much speculation as of late to who would be entitled Governor of the new protectorate, and the grandiose appearance of Isabella in Nashkel all but confirmed the appointment. Apparently satisfied, she gave a slight nod of her head to Miraz, and on cue the convoy moved north.

Isabella was flanked by a couple of seasoned-looking Blackcloak mercenaries as she returned to her Nashkel lodgings.

[Rumours Around Beregost]

The convoy of stacked wagons rolled into Beregost from the south, flanked by columns of lightly armed Amnian troops. They split up, individual wagons being pulled to specific unload points throughout the town. Once there, the soldiers got to work unloading and dividing the reconstruction materials. Their efforts were soon augmented by volunteers from among the local populace, as well as adventurers and passers-by. More wagons arrived, and the town was alive throughout the night with the buzz of activity. In the morning, the carpenters could begin properly assessing each structure.

This turn of events is being met with cautious optimism by the homeless locals, who had felt largely forgotten until now.

[Rumours Around Beregost]

Beregost has taken shape once again over the previous weeks and months, the ruins giving way to a landscape of new buildings. The phrase "From the ashes", promoted so diligently by Samuel Feldpost III during the reconstruction process, is now neatly stencilled on the Risen Phoenix Tavern and Inn. Looking around the interior, patrons of the old Beregost taverns will notice its rich heritage: its locale revealing the Jovial Juggler's foundations; a uniquely coloured wood betraying a pillar from the Feldpost Inn; the characteristic stairs from the Burning Wizard. The new social hub has become a rallying point for the whole community.

Next door, the new Government House stands tall. Confirmed as Governor of the New Protectorate, Isabella Beninio has moved in officially and taken up residence in the house. Having grown to know her during the reconstruction process, the locals seem generally upbeat about her appointment and about the town's new prospects on the Amnian side of the border.

[Rumours Around Nashkel]

Pictures and manifest all over the city walls with the guard's sigil portray the Candlekeep's agent Herran Hymm, with the following brief text:

"Herran Hymm has been declared an undesirable guest in the fair city of Nashkell for consorting with the Drow. Special thanks to the fine sailors and adventurers delivering him to justice"
Somebody told me I should do what they told me...
But there's a hole in that plan, and I'm tearing it down...

The guards are in an uproar as a murdered caravan master is found by a group of adventurers in the Northern Lights Inn in Nashkel. Rummors are that he was slain by a hunchbacked dwarf. The adventurers are briefly detained and interrogated before being released
