DM Rumors of Baldur's Gate

Unread post by DMogorgon »

////posting this as there should be a section specifically for the city. Previously City posts were included with Rumors of the Sword Coast. :http://bgtscc.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=20024////

Updates:

Politics

- Some tensions arise between the Duke's of Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep over decreases in trade South following the Amn War and Zhentarim encroachments and periodic disruptions along the Eastern trade road by land. Overall, despite some grumbling, the Northern Alliance remains strong.

- The Red Wizards continue to maintain a relatively low profile along the Sword Coast, and Trade East with Thay remains a bright spot amid luke-warm merchant matters. The benefits of trade continuously push relations between Thay and the Baldur's Gate to edge towards the friendlier side of untrusting.

- While the threat of open hostility has receded, the disposition among the powers of Baldur's Gate remains contentious and defiant towards the recent Zhentarim encroachments along the Northeast Trade Road. Little 'Witch hunts' for Zhentarim agents and public posturings against Zhentarim and Banite influence by the Duke's and Flaming Fist Mercenary are common.

- The disposition towards Amn remains cold, but very little attention by the powers that be look south of late. With recent troop withdrawls from Northern Amn, the Coin Lords of Amn appear too preoccupied with other borders to seek reigniting tensions with Baldur's Gate.

Economy.

- The worst of the drought and post-war crisis seem behind the city. While far from booming and bustling, the economy of the city has at least pulled back from a dangerous brink. Ports stay busy, and land routes see at least some traffic.

- The duke's continue to promote restoring trade as a primary focus of policy.

- Despite the Zhentarim encroachments, some trade has returned to the bandit plagued roads leading NorthEast. While most merchants who still attempt to use these roads brave considerable risk and difficulty, trade with Thay is at an all time high.

- The southern trade roads remain fairly quiet. Any notable Flaming Fist presence is rarely seen south of the river Chionthar these days.

- Seatrade, the lifeblood of the city, has largely returned to levels close to that prior to the war with Amn.

- Trade and assistance from the northern allies in Daggerford and Waterdeep remain strong, and see little disturbance save the occasional bouts of banditry and the expected dangers of traversing the land.

Rumors

- with some recovery in economic activity, there are whispers that new criminal elements have arisen in the city to try to take advantage.

- Whispers and accusations continue about the string of murders which have plagued the city this year.

- Farmers in the outskirts continue to complain of chanting in the fields at night. Farmers decry livestock are being whipped into a frenzy at night. Travelers at night - an increasingly rare phenomenon - report being attacked by shadows or large frightening mastiff hounds after dark. Whispers of a dark cult having taken root amid the city are spoken in hushed tones in local taverns.

- Several of the organized clergy of popular faiths in the city have taken to organizing festivals and celebrations of holy days. The Ippenshier of Gond, Waulkeen's Saamardach, Rituals of Tyr and others are among those recently celebrated in the city and surrounding farmlands.

Baldur's Gate
Three adventurers, one of them a paladin of Helm, were brought to the flaming fist prison today, supposedly with the charge of having insulted the whole Flaming Fist. After an hour of inquiry, the three of them were brought to the pillory, wherein an angry mob of Fist soldiers and commoners alike started to harass them with every kind of insult imaginable, while also throwing rotten fruits, vegetables and eggs at them.

After five hours, the three were freed from the pillory and sent on their way.

Harbor Districts
A picket of private security guards, stonemasons and carpenters has been seen occupying a partially derelict warehouse in the Harbor district, originally closed due to the city's economical crysis.

The workers then immediately proceeded to start working on the warehouse's restoration, under the eyes of the private security guardsmen. The incessant noise of hammers and saws at work echoes throughout the whole Harbor District from dawn til dusk.

RAID ON ROARINGSHORE

A small armada of war galleons was seen suddenly being loaded up with Flaming Fist mercenaries and leaving port in the late evening. They sailed north.

Several hours later, in the dead of night, alarm bells rang out through the well known pirate alcove of Roaringshore as the armada approached. Several of the swifter and better prepared captains were able to hoist their sails and leave port with ships designed to outrun such large and cumbersome war galleons. The slower and more rum addled soon found themselves pinned by the blockade.

The rain fell hard that night, but the shelling from the armada upon the cliffs of Roaringshore fell much harder. Those who sought to leave by land found themselves confronted by a small contingent of Knights and Paladins, bolstered by a group of elves, cutting off their escape.

Battle raged throughout the night, but it did not take long for the Flaming Fist to secure the settlement. Several captive pirates were loaded upon the galleons as they sailed south, knowing full well that most would face the gallows on the morrow.

Word soon spread throughout Baldur's Gate and the Lords Alliance of the Duke's victory in cleansing roaringshore. While the impact on piracy was moderate, as those pirates who were cunning enough to survive the onslaught would double their efforts in the coming weeks as they sought to secure resources to rebuild Roaringshore, the moral boost and esteem earned by the Duke's and their allies was substantial.

Harbor Districts
The reconstruction of the formerly derelict warehouse in the Harbor District has finally been completed. The building is now fully operational and structurally solid. The workers have been disbanded - apparently in a more than friendly manner, considering how many of them are positively commenting on the fair wages they received - and now only the private security staff remains.

No crates have yet been seen entering or leaving the Warehouse, at least for the time being.

A High Priest of Gond, accompanied by two under-priests, was seen by many in the Eastern District of Baldur's Gate. Many walked or ran past, leaving this group of three to themselves.

A small handful of persons did speak with the High Priest about various subjects, and though the High Priest spoke directly about being summoned to bless an invention from the Temple and giving blessings to be his role under Gond, none themselves asked to have a blessing from the High Priest. Strange...and unfortunate.

Later the High Priest was encountering trouble with the invention he was there to bless—a Gondsman that would no longer move, stuck standing in the street, frustrating the High Priest and not living up to the praise from Gond he was there to deliver. No matter how much the two under-priests pushed and prodded, the Gondsman had seized in place, there in the Eastern District.

Eventually, a strangely-marked man on the face did stop to offer his strength to the High Priest. Curious, the High Priest offered a blessing from Gond in return to have the Gondsman moved...or simply budged. The facially tattooed man tried three times, but was unable to muster the strength he did promise the High Priest. It was an unfortunate failure of ability, for the man.

Thus the High Priest called upon his powers granted from the Lord of All Smiths, and uttered commands channeled from within...and the Gondsman headed toward the Temple, on its own power.

The man with failed strength was seen bowing in respect to the High Priest. The High Priest was later seen entering the Temple of Gond, following the lumbering Gondsman, also followed by his two under-priests.

Rumor is the High Priest has not left the Temple in the Palace District, since.

The First Bank of Baldur's Gate was active late in the evening recently. Talk amongst the upper classes say they saw a known sailor with what appeared to be a crew arrive at the First Bank in person only, but leave pushing a large cart, through the night, toward the Duke's Guest House for visiting dignitaries.

It is told that this cart—presumably filled with coin—did stay with those currently occupying the Guest House.

The next day, in the Dock's District, a garrison of Flaming Fist were put to stand guard around the docked ship named the Whistling Wanderess. None are allowed near it, save for the Crew themselves. Furthermore, none are talking...seemingly less about keeping a secret, and more that a heavy and somber atmosphere hangs over the Wanderess, a certain despair.

Some dock workers talk about seeing mop buckets full of reddish liquid being dumped over the side, into the bay.

While many of the docks focus on the event related to the Wanderess, some also turn their attention to the supply chain feeding the loading and prep of the Amnian ship that has remained moored there, for some time now. So many felt it odd that it would remain docked for so long....

Surely the Dukes will be pleased to no longer see that southern land flag flying in their port. Whatever contents leave with that ship...many say let it be a continuance of the lasting truce, and let nothing disturb its travel homeward...[/color][/i]

A certain commotion can be seen within the Eastern District as masons and lumber carriers arrive and begin to tear down the north-west side of the Elfsong Tavern.

Over many weeks work, it seems that the ownership of the Elfsong have decided to create a public seating area, in preparation for the coming, fairer weather months, of this new year, in which Baldur's Gate has seen a general improvement in economy, activity and weather.

Many try to define the forming space, in simple descriptive words. As the construction continues, labels such as "beer garden," "outdoor seating space" and "private patio" fly around amongst the gawkers.

An intensely bright, magical light has been radiating from within the upper floor of the tallest tower of the Thayan Enclave located in the eastern district. This light has been shining out through the large stained glass windows on that floor, casting a vibrant kaleidoscope of color across the surrounding streets at night - much to the delight of some, and trepidation of others who assume this must mean the Red Wizards are up to something. Those who are sensitive to the Weave's ebbs and flows can sense immense magical energy being channeled within, but beyond that nothing is known for the time being.

As the sun rose from the east and the harbor fog was brushed aside by the light of day, a galleon of great size and warfare capabilities slowly sailed into port in the Gate harbor.

Rarely has such a vessel been seen, especially of late, as the Gate more often harbors merchant vessels with payload. To add to the rarity of this event, the vessel was flying—and boldly so—the Amnian flag. And below it, another flag that to the casual eye would not be known this far north, but the detail of the insignia suggests a House of great renown.

Docked and secured, a great procession departed the vessel. Gilded and armored soldiers walked in a solid wall, protecting two individuals.

Rumor says that when the faces of these two individuals were glanced between the wall of helmets, their countenance did not seem...pleased. Not one single bit.

The procession moved quickly—guided by a page sent to greet them—directly to the private manor of Duke Liia Jannath.

A peasant can be seen riding a cart in from the edge of the Ducal lands near the Fields of the Dead, the cart is granted entrance into the Palace district and continues is way through the inner gates to the Harbor. The cargo in the cart looks like four large boxes and it is covered with a black cloth.

Once in the harbor district the cart makes its way to the Head Quarters of the Flaming Fist. Once inside the drive hands a note to the captain of the Fist, and start to unload four pine boxes, all about the size of a man.

A commotion sweeps the slum areas of the east gate district. The small folk talk of an old beggar found dead during the night. Nothing unremarkable perhaps; but for the blood curdling scream he gave out that drew passers by into his little alley, the twisted look of horror on his face, and the way those first on the scene swear they saw the shadows around him move.

Time has passed quickly since the galleon flying the Amnian flag docked in the harbor of Baldur's Gate. The procession of dignitaries has long since entered, then left, the private mansion of the Duke Liia Jannath. That the galleon has remained docked for this long, is a sign that whatever business the dignitaries have journeyed to the Gate to undertake, has yet to conclude.

This day, however, in the Gate, a warrant is issued by the Flaming Fist. It calls for Crewmen of the Whistling Wanderess to be found and escorted to Duke Jannath directly, willing or not, shall they be found within the city walls. Though no scrolls are publicly posted, from time to time, a small regiment of Flaming Fist can be see entering the taverns and warehouses both in the Harbor District and the Eastern District, taking a good look into all faces, and often questioning the barkeeps, at length.

Sailors that are familiar with the crew of the Whistling Wanderess talk bold and loud within the taverns, as if to make sure that eavesdroppers are very aware to the fact that, that strangely enough, the Wanderess has not been docked in Baldur's Gate for some weeks.

But as any keen sailor knows about the Wanderess crew—they do not just travel by ship, when they have entered the Gate proper.

//OOC— Participants: if a known Whistling Wanderess Crewman is seen within the Gate, within the same frame as a Flaming Fist officer, take a screenshot as evidence, and submit to DM Novus. This will count as an action as informant to the Flaming Fist's attention, and the Fist do reward informants. Alternatively, one may attempt to Role-play escorting a Whistling Wanderess Crewman—if within the Gate—to the Flaming Fist headquarters. At that point, also submit a screenshot. The Role-play can end at that point, and I will pick it up in-game at the next convenient date for all parties involved.
