Rumors of Beregost
Image
Beregost is a rural farming town with an economically strategic location upon the Trade Way. The town's population fluctuates with the overland caravan trade, but close to three thousand souls call it their permanent home.

Catering to merchants, travelers, pilgrims, and adventurers, Beregost has its fair share of news pass through and over its cobblestone streets. This thread is for showcasing those rumors that deal exclusively with Beregost and the rural area around it (to include the ruins of Ulcaster's school of wizardry).

A New Year's Arrival
The First Day of Hammer, 1350
Image
Two holy men arrived in Beregost as the year was turning, in the company of some pilgrims from the City of Splendors. After a meeting with the high priest of the Song of the Morning temple, they were granted offices within the local Church of Lathander.

One of the men, Thomas, is apparently a resident of Beregost returned after several years away. The other, Eldarian, is unknown in the region.

There was a great deal of commotion at the Song of the Morning temple tonight. A priest of the Morninglord, well-known and well-liked in the region, by the name of Tolan was brought back to town grievously wounded.

Rumors of Bhaalists are spoken uncertainly. There's been a lot of activity in and out of the temple since, but no sign of Tolan.

Within the temple of Beregost, a quiet song could be heard drifting up from the tombs of the church, the words infused with a calming magic, though the words wouldn't have been discernible, quiet as the singing was. The singing died out with a few minutes of beginning, the magic lingering in the air shortly before it too fades away. Those within the temple may have seen Kitten going into the tombs/basement some time before the singing began, and has yet to come up again.

A Costly Journey
The Ninth Day of Hammer, 1350
Image
The Song of the Morning Temple is warning travelers through Beregost of recent bandit activity along the Coast Way, north of the township.

Travelers are encouraged to travel in groups, or with guards, as often as possible. The clergy warn that even when bandits are not active, nearby goblin tribes are always watching for soft targets.

A runner bearing the cross of the Silver Shield across his tabard makes his way to the church and delivers a finely penned and sealed letter bearing the hallmark of the same.

"Clergy of the Church of The Most Radiant,

My name is Valkrun Anatox, Councilor of the Silver Shield, and I have recently spoken with Tolan of your order regarding a contract to help with your needs further north. After discussion our council has agreed to aid you in this endeavor, as well as to offer the services of the Silver Shield to you in any further matters where you would wish it.

The Silver Shield has long sought to improve trade in and around Beregost and to improve the dire situation of this once thriving city. We see you as and your brethren as our closest allies in this endeavor, though if only from afar until now, and seek to work with you to further goals to this end for the benefit of all.

I know at least a few of my men have been establishing ties with those of your loyalties, especially a recruit by the name of Roric and I hope to meet with Tolan and other members of your order soon to see how the Silver Shield can further aid the cause of Beregost.

Good wishes and safe winds,

Valkrun Anatox, Councilor of the Silver Shield"

Last night, inside the Risen Phoenix Inn, there appeared to be a bit of a scuffle between someone who would match the description of Kitten and another. Most of the customers would speak of how Kitten initially staggered drunkenly into the Inn and was being loud and obnoxious, before eventually picking a fight with the other individual. Some speak of two others that tried to diffuse the situation to no avail, though the whole scuffle overall didn't last long.

Kitten then staggered around looking for someone before passing out behind the Inn, waking up many hours later and wandering off.

After spending some wonderful time with The Lady Narasida, Kitten had to excuse herself before leaving, her day once again rather terrible. Heading to Beregost, she would search inside and around town, once again searching for someone, though after a few hours she would walk towards the center of town, alone. She stops outside of the Temple of Beregost, watching it with sad eyes for some time, before heading into the Risen Phoenix, sitting quietly in a corner while drinking down a few bottles. Quiet as she is, her eyes move all over the place, searching for people, before eventually stumbling up the steps, and disappearing into a room.

Order at what cost?
The Twelfth Day of Hammer, 1350

Rumour has it that the Captain named Antonio de Coibra was brutalizing some citizens of Beregost accused of being 'disruptive of Order.' He smashed the teeth out of a man, breaking his jaw, and later on sought out another young girl within the place accused of trying to warn the people that guards were coming. The patrons of the inn watched the Captain strike the girl despite her objections that he had misunderstood, dragging her outside, where he proceeded to kick her in the stomach and face as she was lying helpless on the cobblestones. The sadistic entourage of citizens cheered this domestic display of brutal violence, only interrupted by a few of the adventurous persuasion who could not watch the violence, before the limp husk of a human being was finally dragged towards the Temple of Lathander. Even the servants inside who recieved her was horrified at the cruel display of the Amnish forces. Against the initial protests of the Church, the two victims of violence was later dragged outside the city limits.

Her blood would still be smeared on the ground in a macabre trail from the inn towards the temple, where she had been dragged.

Walking into the Temple of Lathandar of Beregost, Kitten spoke to the Priest attending the altar, asking if she may visit Tolan, before quietly taking a seat, waiting.

------------

Informed of such, Kitten lies down on a bench in the back of the church, waiting for Eldarian. Closing her eyes, she quietly drifts off to sleep, occasionally whispering in her sleep.

In the days that follow, there have still been no sign of Tolan, but those who enter the temple to ask his condition are told there have been little development so far. He is currently under guard by one of the temples Templars and visitors will not be allowed entry without explicit permission from Brothers Eldarian and Thomas or one of those tending to his recovery.

An Acolyte of Candlekeep arrived after a few days claiming to be a good friend to Tolan and have not been seen since entering the temple. It is rumored that she is tending to his recovery, not leaving his side.

The mood of the townsfolk thus far

Despite what could be perceived by some as "excessive use of force", Captain Antonio de Coibra's own brand of frontier justice seems to be helping the town to get back on its feet. Local laws are far more respected now than until a few days ago, crime is dropping and people are already feeling safer when walking across the streets at night.

Yesterday a man who threatened two persons with drawn weapons and proclaimed himself as an envoy of the governess was personally "gifted" by the captain with a broken jaw and a few missing teeth. A woman, said by some patrons of the local tavern to have tried to warn the lawbreaker of the captain's arrival, received a good pounding as well, all of this under the cheers of a crowd which is finally seeing someone administer the law and punishing criminals.

Both persons were then dragged towards the temple of Lathander, wherein they were treated for their injuries before being thrown out of town by the Captain and two of his assistants.

De Coibra is earning quite a reputation as a gruff and implacable, perhaps ruthless, yet on-the-side-of-the-common-folk upholder of the law. Some citizens are already affectionately referring to him as "the Ironside", a reference to his previous status of shock troop during the Amn-Gate war as well as to his inflexible manners, and are quick to point out that, despite the instances of broken bones inside the town having experienced a sharp increase, funerals and serious injuries due to unlawful behavior are dropping considerably.

As for the governess, the townsfolk of Beregost seem for once happy at her administration, which is seemingly bringing some order and tranquility to the streets. According to many, her sharp wits and the captain's manners are exactly what the town needs. Whether this increase in popularity will endure or not, though, remains to be seen.

The Dawnpriest Mavicyr Savyr could be seen to have returned to the temple in Beregost after several tendays out of town. Things were far from how he had left them and a large pile of paperwork awaited his return. None of which can bring down the spirit of a faithful of Lathander for long. With the new dawn, Mavicyr wears a smile as he walks around the town to get up to date on recent happenings.

Those spending time in Beregost may have met, or heard word of, a Lathanderite by the name of Brennan Aldunn who has been spending some considerable time about the town.

He has been introducing himself to the townsfolk, playing his lute and singing songs in the town square (and is fairly well talented), and telling tales of his youth in the Dalelands peppered with lesson and morals related to the dogma of Lathander - rebirth, renewal, self-perfection, etc.

Nearly each morning he can be seen near the east edge of town, watching the sun rise above the horizon, followed by training with sword and shield, as well as mace and shield combat.

Night falls, and Kitten is yet again lost, not knowing what to do. She asks the priest to speak to Eldarian, Thomas, anyone, before walking to the Risen Phoenix in frustration. Ordering a few bottles of Fire Wine, she keeps an eye on the doors, waiting for Jack.
