A tall man in a hat, and a shorter, hooded figure in dark red stood side by side on a small bridge over the river that runs through Greenest. There was quiet talk between the pair, before a somewhat peculiar event took place. The tall man dropped a boot into the river. The shorter, feminine figure did the same, but only after she hit the man with the boot in her grasp.

Both boots appeared laden and sank to the bottom, to be forgotten.

Across the farmlands of Berdusk and Iriaebor, along the eastern Uldoon Trail, a series of lightning raids have begun. From out of thin air come small strike groups of Zhentarim-aligned forces, wrecking havoc on a series of towns. But the goal of the attacks is not the fire they bring. Where these attacks hit, great, dark storms gather. The downpour is sharp and biting, raining scores upon scores of thorns and nettles. Where they touch, the land dies, as masses of thick, choking weeds weave themselves through the soil and strangle the crops.

In the weeks following the attacks, the areas struck become mires of vicious vegetation. The wicked seeds planted by the attacks grow into terrible assassin vines, tendriculoses, and shambling mounds. The very land has turned angry and corrupt, and the creatures strike at all they come across.

In the meanwhile, there come reports of roaming undead and maddened villagers setting light to granaries and poisoning wells across towns spreading out from the epicenters of the attacks.

A nightingale flitted across low-hanging boughs. This bird was extremely clumsy; closing the shorter distances had it dropping, and closing longer distances seemed only possible because of gathered momentum and intense struggle. Despite this, its song filled the evening.
Image
Found from the Wildling Museum, painted by Ann Sanders.

The bird had crossed over Greenest, over Elturel, over Scornubel and Berdusk, and had found its home in the lands in-between the rectangular plot of land between the river Chionthar, and the Uldoon’s Trail. That doesn’t mean the bird got any better at flying. It found itself in the lands between the Sharpteeth and Reaching Woods, along roads long-abandoned and well-tread alike.

The bird found herself on no wind that carried into the cities—gods forbid Elturel proper—but rather upon the windowsills of lone hovels, the ruins of yore, and upon the outskirts of villages. Places forgotten, perhaps, by those dazzled by larger settlements. On each night that one could be found, the bird remained in that village or lone cabin for the entire evening. It watched. It listened. Tiny eyes lingered on the shadows, on every rustle leaves gave way to. Some nights, the nightingale loosely followed the path of travelers along the road, following the same patterns. If they slept, it watched over their campsite.

At dawn, the bird left a marigold in a windowsill of each building found. Where there were no windows, she left it at the doorstep. If there was a campsite, she left it there.

Days were spent flitting across the countryside. At high noon, a woman rested in the sturdy boughs of elder oaks. The figure draped herself in azure and emerald cloth, with supple leather boots and gloves. A wand was strapped to her chest, her hand upon it when in reverie, and a wooden mask peered out from under her hood. The mask was featureless and smooth, arguably tame compared to loudly colored, shimmering silks.

Hours passed and the wand waved again. This has been occurring for at least a tenday, now, with only a few nights passing without this bird’s presence. However, recently, the shrouded woman occasionally enters these settlements to refill on supplies; she removes her mask when pressed, revealing a decidedly deeply tanned elven face, with pale blue eyes.

This is a bird who has been watching, waiting, for something. It avoids the blighted lands, plagued they be, though it does sometimes pass high over or around them to get to some secluded areas. The woman seems all the more perturbed as time passes near them.

The few patrons of the Greenest Inn late that night felt the cool breeze enter as the door opened. One of the inn's patrons walks in carrying a wet sack slung over his shoulder. Dressed in a simple white tunic, he did not look like he travelled far. The scent of freshly caught fish was trailing the man as he walked towards the bar. Orniff gives the man a quick nod as the sack was handed over across the bar to him.

"That should be enough for now. Make sure it feeds the most famished, aye?" Some patrons would hear the man tell the dwarf, all the while handing over his fishing pole as well. A few of them even noticed the gold piece he slipped across the bar before he made his way up the stairs.

It is well past mid-day when a lone, saffron-and-jade shrouded figure departs from the edge of the woods and limps to the safety of the walls of Greenest with a matted, grey-furred carcass over their shoulder. Drenched in the a dark, viscous, alien sludge, the woman bears a sodden bandage long stained a deep scarlet from a fresh and active wound - a particularly uncharacteristic occurrence, beyond simply the unusual tardiness. The wolf upon her demure shoulders still trails blood from its fangs, and its death bears the clear signs of a savage, frantic struggle that echo upon the torn quipao. The pannier at her hip is rent by the mark of tooth and claw, saving one thigh but not the other. A sullen grimace seems adhered to her face in stark countenance to the normally ever-present, gentle smile.

It is her arms, however, that tell the most dramatic story as they reach from tattered sleeves. Clutching the battered plate of an enameled serving tray against the legs of her kill, her left arm is pallid and shaking with the onset of frostbite, leaving thin scales of rime on the carcass where it touches. In the knuckles of her right lies a simple worn kitchen knife, but the limb is blackened and charred, with even the blisters having been cauterized and trail thin streamers of dark smoke.

No explanation is offered for her appearance or circumstance as she shuffles to the barn-door of Hammer Hall. Any word she might have offered appears to bear secondary concern to the scorched remnants of a cordage bracelet clenched between her teeth, laced to hold two sooty coins. Withdrawing to the Hall for several hours, the Lucky Coin nevertheless holds dinner service of fresh canid consommé. However, even irregular visitors might notice that the transient tavern-keep is evidently lacking in her normal warmth and spark, while her motions are deliberately slow and garbed in fresh raiment accompanied by gloves that disappear into her sleeves.

Late afternoon following an ominous cry that echoes the land, a visitor to Greenest bursts into the Lucky Coin seeking the aid of an arcanist to break a friend free of an uncontrolled magical item. Among the guests that day he finds a surly orc-blood who offers to help, who allays concerns of competency upon presenting a folio of extensive arcane notes and formulae. While the pair depart the town by wagon to the site of the man's comrade, the Shao tavernkeep would be noted to post silent vigil upon the wall to await their return.

It is some time later when a small procession arrives on foot. Accompanied by a knight and and elf, the old orc bore a crimson-robed body over his shoulder and lacked the company of the man or his wagon. After being met by the baker, the group crossed town to the Temple of Chauntea where they lingered briefly before dispersing separate ways. The bald, robed woman was left in the care of the temple to recover from her recent ordeal.

The long way home

Unread post by mastajabba »

A going Page in the Order of the Radiant Heart was returning north after clearing back the ever present dangerous overpopulation of wyverns along the Tradeway. When he stopped to speak with a fellow Tormtar. After a conversation with the Seasoned Tormtar Paladin and Lord Osric Vale he was heading back to his stable duties at Baldur’s Gate when he met a young half elven minstrel. The two took the long way home. Along the way clearing out flinds, vicious wicked Gnoll like creatures with a ever consuming hatred and need to ravage and eat.

After that they made their way north west crossing the magnificent fortified bridge in the East Chontair, Radiant Crossing where they helped a Hell Rider Sergeant with the ever present problem of lawless smugglers. The two arrived safely at Baldur’s Gate the young page satisfied that as a Tomtar he had completed his mission and that his charge arrived safe and sound.

After that he stripped off his armor and put on his humble grey robes and set about tending to the magnificent horses and mare of the Order of the Radiant Heart.

An elven man wearing a strange mask is seen leaving the Chauntean temple, heavy bandaging around his chest telling tales of a slow recovery after a grievous injury. Aided by a walking stick, he moves slowly with unsteady steps upon the path through the village. He makes his way out of town towards the caravan where he buys passage towards the Gate.

A man traveling from Neshkal came up a burnt down home surrounded by green fields of colorful flowers. However he spotted tracks that didn't look to be of the typical hostile creatures along the trail. He followed it south where he was ambushed by a woman who also summoned some shadow fiend. After a fierce battle and killing the women, he searched her body and found evidence that she seemed to have been a wanted person. After searching the area, he came upon a chest that had a Goldheart Dagger of Elven made. It bared the symbol of a famed temple unknown to him.

Campfire Collector
Rewards are offered
Image

A local man clad in mithral, known as Yuri Lichelina, is heard to be offering coin to any new or would be adventurers for both gems and petrified creatures. Seemingly the only exception to this rule being citizens of Greenest. And the man himself is always found at the Greenest campfire, if not then a messenger Pidgeon seems to be perched on the bench waiting.

As this time of troubles rages, the east still knows war. Incidents of direct conflict have quieted, and reports indicate that the Zhentarim host crossed the River Reaching over a pontoon bridge into the eastern Reaching Woods and towards the Sunset Vale. It's moved a little less surely than at the start of the war - between increased Lords Alliance effectiveness in countering its raids, to holding position in one spot for a long time, to a shipment of much-needed supplies from agents down the River Reaching never showing up, the army found itself incapable of foraging as much as it needed to feed the bellies of its soldiers. The silence of the gods and the chaos afflicting the land has also eroded confidence. Some asked if the Bane or Gruumsh or Lolth or the other gods they serve have abandoned them, and what that means for their prospects in an already lopsided war.

In the Sunset Vale, the army has remained close to the Reaching Woods, relying on its rougher terrain to hide the army and discourage enemy attacks. As it has marched, it has sent out fast raiding parties deep into Lords Alliance farmlands, making off with whatever it can steal to feed hungry bellies and fill empty pockets. Over the weeks of maneuver, it has become clear the army moves to Darkhold to break the siege. How it intends to do this is not entirely clear — reports of its numbers still put it significantly below the forces assailing the fortress. Some reports also indicate the army has shrunken a little - some forces stayed behind nearer to the west for some other, unknown purpose.

Darkhold itself still stands. The Perimeter Gate at the entrance to the Darkhold Vale has held, though a collapsed section has seen sporadic attempts by the Lords Alliance to break through into the Vale. Inside, Darkhold's defenders have also been reinforced by an army of mercenaries purchased from Westgate, who snuck into the castle through secret roads in the Sunset Mountains, bringing additional manpower and supplies. Among Darkhold's refugee population, a small, shoddy village has been raised in the center of the Darkhold Vale, and the folk have tilled the land as best as they've been able to over the summer, though the harvest is expected to be small and some worry about the coming winter. Darkhold's grain stores have lasted so far, but the effects of the war and the selling off of Darkhold's surplus to Baldur's Gate last year have dwindled its savings significantly. Darkhold's Gateway and Underdark passage have been lifelines, though the entrance of Kraak Helzak into the war have lead to fears of further movement underground.

Among the Zhentarim themselves, the sudden death of its assassins in some freak consequence of the Time of Troubles has further diminished morale, though it has been offset somewhat by word of victories in the east against Cormyr. Those loyal to Bane are less thrilled at the news of Manshoon's coup, though many in Darkhold's leadership seem largely unphased. Indeed, it was with a certain level of glee that Lord Harkonis ordered the apprehension of Imperceptor Vyshasa, who now dwells within the black cells beneath Darkhold.
