“Did you really think you would make a difference?
That something would change?”

the hollow, unpleasant voice asked.
“Everything you touch withers
and dies eventually.
You are an inconvenience
and smart people leave
before the poison ends them.
You have seen it happen before.
They all leave you in the end.”

the unpleasant words pierced the mind like daggers.
“To say it is a curse would be a kindness.
You are far worse than that,
a real plague the world has to suffer from.”

one nail after another, the barbs sank in.
“Whatever you do,
wherever you go,
it will always be the same.
The end will always be the same.”

the hollow voice echoed inside the burning mind.
“I’ve seen you flail around in the dark,
try as you might,
it will all be in vain.
Best to save your energy
and just accept it.
Makes the life easier.”

with that the voice was gone,
but the pain remained.

Fallen leaves scattered where eyes can see,
coldness of the North carried in the wind.
Frost on the red petals of a late blooming flower.
Defeated by the cold bite they fall,
drops of blood to feed the hungry ground.
When the snow falls, they are all forgotten.
But they will rise again with the new dawn.

Flakes of snow drift down slowly,
covering the ground with a white blanket.
When the temperature drops,
frost forms even at the field of vision.
Breath turns into frozen haze,
a reminder of warmth.
The first rays of a new morning
make everything sparkle like diamond dust.
The quiet mark of the winter’s heart holds beauty,
even if the cold is the herald of winter’s wrath.

Swept away by the wind
the only answer I can give
for I know not any better.
A casual question asked every so often
brought by curiosity or thirst for knowledge.

The wind is untamed,
ever changing force of nature.
I know not of its designs.
It can be gentle like a lover’s touch
but it can also show a side
you wish you would never get to see.

It has the strength to carry far
but once taken
– will one ever find its way back to the beginning?
When the wind turns,
does it carry the memory of the journey traveled?
Does it ever get lost?

Laughter — the sun on a cloudy day. Not to be taken for granted, it is not always easily shared in its most genuine form. A reminder of merriment and jokes, of things worth sharing, of times spent in deserving company.

It can be hidden but it should not be faked as you are only fooling yourself then. It can take other forms but in its purest form it is simply bubbly joy.

Are you able to laugh at yourself?
When was the last time you laughed?

Truly laughed?

Coals are burning low,
too late to get a proper fire going.
Warmth of the garments enough
to keep the cold and wind away.
A stray cat
appeared one day.
A curious thing,
more than meets the eye.
Hungry thing,
seen much of the world it must have.
Sassy thing,
surprised it is not red.
Bold thing,
used to getting its way it must have.
What is it looking for?

Cold, sharp metal,
hint of a breeze swirling around it.
It found its way back,
snuffing the last flame with a sharp cut.
When the world turns cold,
yesterday’s leaves crumbling beneath the feet.
The scent of rain in the air,
but before it washes the ground clean,
they are swept away.
Gone with the wind.

What lurks near your field of vision?
You turn to look,
finding nothing out of place.
You feel the shifting ground beneath,
but nothing is out there.
Your ears perk and focus,
you notice the absence of sounds.
You sense something is coming,
robbing you of breath.
You waited,
so you must pay.

The cold metal rubs into the skin. It burns. Not like a flame nor frost, but it burns like rust.

The squeaks arrive first somewhere close by, then teeth bite into the unguarded arm. With the bite comes a wave of nausea.

The immediate surroundings are void of sound. Clang of metal against metal repeating as the wielder of the blade moves along the wall made of metal bars.

I can only wait.
