Background:

Kiartan grew up among the Uthgardt Griffon tribe who make their home at Griffon's Nest, west of The Evermoors. Unlike other tribes the Griffon are relatively welcoming of outsiders, as long as it furthers their cause, and Kiartan learned more of the ways of civilised folk than others of his kind. Their leader is a young and charismatic chieftain called Kralgar Bonesnapper who has ambitions of ruling a northern city one day and he welcomes magic-users for the powerful items they provide.

Not all of the tribe appreciated this direction however and some moved against the chieftain in the hope of returning to a more traditional way of life. The plotters were discovered and their leaders executed, Kiartan's father among them. Wishing to be magnanimous, Kralgar chose to exile the families of those involved rather than have them slain. This is how Kiartan earned his name, but not before he publicly stood up to Kralgar and received a swift beat-down for his efforts. He carries the scar from Kralgar's club to this day.

Kiartan's mother moved to Beorunna's Well in the hope of joining the Black Lion tribe. The Black Lion are gradually turning their backs on the traditional Uthgardt lifestyle as well but in a much more peaceful fashion. Kiartan had no wish to be a farmer with an embarrassing name however. He decided to travel the coast and earn his keep by his sword. He abandoned the Griffon totem and began offering prayers directly to Tempus. Eventually he took a job as a caravan guard and arrived in Baldur's Gate.

To gain wealth and fame. To earn a new name.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:

He's rather impulsive and debauched. While prone to violence he would not attack someone who could not fight back, for that would be cowardly. He is quick to anger but also quick to forget and isn't likely to hold a grudge. He thinks most laws and civilised customs are tools that the weak hide behind. That said, he enjoys the benefits of city living and is less traditional in his outlook than other barbarians. Despite his chaotic disposition he does have a sense of honour and would prefer to keep an oath than break it.
