Suggestion: Change game time - Real time ratio

Unread post by Selande »

The server is currently set to 5 real-life minutes equaling an hour for our characters. It basically equates to 12 game-days for every real life day.

That's probably tailored to suit spell durations or because they didn't want abusive times "locking out" light-blind characters for several hours at a time...

But it's sooooooooooooo annoying when you start a conversation in the middle of the night and before you've finished your characters drink, it's day already.

Also pretty sure the game clock being the current ratio is why it rains every 30 minutes for 10 minutes...

So my suggestion is to increase the timer (and spell durations be damned!) to something more like 15 real life minutes equalling an hour of game time. We'd have 4 game days per real life day, each lasting 6 hours.

It sounds good for me, especially about the part regarding how fast day and night goes over. It could be an issue, since some potion duration will be tripled but not much to be concerned, especially for when the dispel fix goes in.

Spell duration could be fixed too, if needed. Day/night issue annoys me too at times.

Is it even possible to adjust the time clock ratio?

It's possible, but I believe changing the time ratio also affects spells duration and that's the reason it hasn't been done.

I would LOVE for the ratio to be 1:1. Let the time of day match the forum clock. One hour that passes in game, is equal to one hour in Real Life - that's also how the ratio of time passage works on our server from a lore perspective.

Personally, I always try to ignore the constant passing of day and night ingame. I go by the forum clock, if GMT says it's morning then it's morning. If GMT say it's evening, then it's evening.
I quickly glaze over it, when someone starts throwing off 'goodmornings' and 'goodevenings' within an hour of each other. It seems a bit distracting to me, that my character spent 3½ days exchanging pleasantries with an old friend, while walking from the East Gates to Maltz :P

Issue with 1:1 ratio is that some players will never see and get to TO in certain hours. I for one(and pretty much every student/worker in Europe who is 8-16), despite being CET will always be playing in evenings/night. Fun to play a Lathanderite that way.

Selande's 2:1 ratio allows both morning people and night people to experience both phases of the day. 3 hours daylight 3 hours moonlight.

The spells affected already last a ridiculous amount of time AND most if not all are subject to disjunction.

For comparison, they'd last 5'/level longer than heroism... and I never had them run out after I got past level 8.

Only if spell durations are changed accordingly, there is no reason why one change should negatively impact on other mechanics that might not be a high priority to you, but is central for others game experience.

So if it is all balanced out, then yes sure, I dont care what the ratio is pretty much but I do agree it is some what frustrating how time just passes in the blink of an eye while you trying to be immersed in the given scenario.

However it is out of the question for me, if this would affect rest timers but not spell duration, it is frustrating enough having to wait 5 minutes to rest because you removed all your effects through the PC tool to enter beregost, when there is nothing else to do at certain hours with 5 people online.
I know spellcasters have major advantages on the server presently, but they should not be penalized, rather see other things balanced out.

(if it isnt obvious, I have no idea how these things work mechanically, but just uttering my opinion ;) )

I play a Lathanderite and I'd be playing mainly in the evenings as well. I do not see how that changes anything for the enjoyment of my RP though. My RP isn't dependent on the time of day. It's far more on having someone to RP with - and I doubt the time ratio on the server is going to change anything about that.

Lorewise, 'most' sermons are held at dawn. Not all. And most sermons presently happens off-screen as there'd be one each and every dawn in the Church of Lathander. I'm fairly certain the few events we'd have to organize, we'd be far more interested in player availability than the time of day - and I doubt anyone would blink an eye at that. This is a game, and we does our absolute best to emulate characters who can devote their entire life to it. We, the players, cannot... or at least I can't ;)

It would just seem weird to me that four days will pass ingame while on the server timeline and real life only a single day passes. When I tell you that we should meet on the morrow, does that mean in 6 hours or in 24 hours RL time?

That also means that my character should drop everything they're doing 3-6 times a day to go pray? I don't mind praying, I think it's an important aspect of playing a cleric.

Don't get me wrong, 4:1 is far better than 12:1. But if we're going to make a change, I'd argue for getting as close to 1:1 as we can possibly push it - anything closer is better though :)

@Ilthilan I doubt this would ever be allowed to be implemented, without looking at both the rest timer and spell duration, to ensure nothing went haywire :)

I think the only spells that might be affected are the ones that last hour/lvl (and I doubt these get affected) and the flat 24-hour-duration ones (which should last for-friggin-ever anyways  )

The rest timer shouldn't be affected. That seems to reflect your character level rather than any reference to the actual day/night or server clock.

1:1 would be insane! There would be characters who were entirely nocturnal! I find that quite immersion breaking.

1:1 is insane. What would we take GMT-0? Some would never even see the sun of the day then. If you start playing at 20:00 GMT-0, for instance and would stop some hours later.

Clearly opposed.

2:1 Might still be too long.

4:1 would be better though. I don't like it either that a meeting lasts for days sometimes, only because the rp is enjoyable and/or lasting longer than expected.

My suggestion (15 minutes = 1 game hour) is 4:1 ratio.

Spell durations should be longer...or has no one else gotten frustrated when their buffs wore out in an event due to lag, or the DM afking, or having to re-set up something. I am not trying to blame to DMs for anything here, but it can be frustrationg when you think a fight is about to start and you cast a short buff only to have it wear off before the DM changes the bad guy to the actual bad guy faction...all because someone had to say like eight more words...
