Beregost 1350 Campaign Thread

((Please use this as an RP thread for intrigue and corruption plots that I am helping to run in Northern Amn.))
DM Dialectic wrote:Rumors spread that a public execution took place of a convicted tax embezzler named Pete in Beregost, Pete convicted of stealing millions of pieces of gold from Amnian government coffers. It is said that a woman cried out for mercy to be shown for Pete, but the calls were ignored. Upon Pete's beheading by an Amnian soldier's blade, an arcanist attempted to teleport herself and Pete away to safety for reasons unknown, but cast the spell too late and instead just teleported the man's headless body away with her as Pete's head fell to the floor of the execution stand. The arcanist involved was said to be searched for by the Amnian authorities for crimes against Amn, with a physical description of her handed out to the local Amnian garrison. Some may also hear rumors that the Amnian military officer in charge of the execution asked some of the crowd gathered to aid him in tracking down another Amnian tax embezzler that owned property in Beregost. Some of those present agreed and went off into the town to begin their search. Talk spreads in Northern Amn that perhaps this is part of the beginning of an anti-corruption purge by local officials.

Why wouldn't he just listen?

Elly hadn't gone after Juan for the reward or the recognition or concerns about law. She wanted to save him from the fate she had watched Pete suffer, and it was for that reason alone that she made her way to a part of Beregost where she had fallen prey to a crooked dice game a few moons past. The officer had given her enough to work with, and she already knew what it would take to get the information she needed: A performance. A single thought echoed in her head.

Become the person the role calls for.

She played their dice game, and let them take her five gold pieces with an oblivious smile, chatting them up until they had warmed up to her. Then she lied.

She had always been a good liar, and it had saved her skin more than once when it meant saving her from embarrassment or harm, but somehow, this felt different. She wasn't lying because trouble had found her, she was lying as a means to an end, and somehow, it made it feel wrong. The thoughts were fleeting, though, and quickly faded when she reminded herself that the alternative was another man having his head taken off after a mock trial. Killing a person because they're skimming a little off the top? It seemed ridiculous to Endelyon.

No amount of coin could justify such a violent death.

Her performance was a hit, and ended exactly how she had planned. She made her way towards the homestead Ken had given her directions to, and it was then that she heard someone walking alongside her. After a brief scare, she was relieved to find out that it was an elf she had met a few times in the past. Elly wasn't sure what motivated Serindil, perhaps even bordering on concern that he would try to capture Juan and turn him into the guards. Still, the only other option she could think of was telling the elf to pike off without an explanation, and that thought didn't sit well with her at all. In the end practicality helped guide her toward the right choice: If you have to take a step into the unknown, it is better to take it with an ally.

I just have to find him and warn him that he's the next one on the chopping block.

The house looked empty, without a single light shining from within. Endelyon reached down to turn the knob, and was surprised to find that it wasn't even locked. The elf slipped in first, his footsteps never making a sound. She followed him into the darkness.

After a brief encounter and unintentionally scaring a gnome so bad she ran away in fear, the two realized that she must have escaped through a trapdoor in the kitchen. After some time spent searching, they weren't able to find it, but it mattered little as moments later it sprang open. Three gnomes sprang out, telling the two they better leave. Elly was trying to frantically explain the situation, but it seemed like hostility was inevitable. Just as she was sure the gnomes would attack them, the door leading into the homestead opened and slammed shut, and just like that, there was the man she was looking for.

The conversation that took place next was a bit of a blur when she thought back on it. She tried her best to convince Juan to skip town before they found him, taking every approach she could think of: She tried to appeal to his sense of morality but he laughed in her face. She tried to appeal to his love for his family and he spoke of them as if they were trivial in his thoughts. Finally, she tried to appeal to his sense of fear.

Bingo.

The look in the man's eyes when she explained they were trying to find him to take his head off was enough to make Elly think her mission completed. Just as she won him over, Juan muttered something quietly.

"I don't understand it, though.."

"...understand what?" she had asked curiously in response.

The next thing she knew, there was banging on the door. Juan turned to answer it, and Elly had tried to call out to him, but she knew in her heart it was too late. She knew that he would open the door and the guards would haul him off to the stockade. She thought one of the adventurers must have figured out where he lived, and led the guards right to the man they were hunting. She knew they had him.

She knew, and that's why it was all the more shocking to her when she heard a blood-curdling scream echo out from the front of Juan's home. The gnomes had quickly scurried down the hatch into the subfloor as Elly and the elf made their way towards the source of the shout. She saw Juan laying on the stairs, a knife buried in his chest. She tried to spring into action, running to Juan and kneeling beside his crumpled form. From her satchel she produced a scroll case, setting it down beside her and thumbing through the scrolls frantically. Just as she found the scroll she was looking for, the body.. disintegrated. It was the only word she could ever use to describe it when she would think back on it.

Just as she began to wonder exactly who put this magical blade in Juan's chest, she heard Serindil's voice sharply behind her, telling her they had to go. As her shock from what she had just witnessed faded, she realized that what sounded like nothing short of a battle was taking place in the sub floor below. Sword rang out against shield, and a few loud explosions rattled the structure around them. She ran up the stairs, throwing the front door open. Serindil thought it might be wise to take the murder weapon to study, but as soon as the elf touched it, it turned to dust much as Juan's body had. Her bravado all used up, Elly did what she had always done best: She ran.

Her and Serindil hopped over fences and crawled through brush to leave town and avoid the detection of the guards. At some point, Serindil asked her if she had a scroll that could teleport them quickly away. She reached into her satchel for her scroll case, and--

"Ah, hells bells. The scrolls!"

She looked back over her shoulder ruefully, but she hardly had time to worry about that now. The two of them continued away from the town on foot, parting ways when they did finally cross Amn's border into the Gate's territories.

Before sleep finally found her that night, a single thought rang out in her mind over and over..

Why wouldn't he just listen?

After posting new written laws of Amn in Beregost and Nashkel, two Amnian magistrates may have been seen answering what they considered to be some good, some foolish, and some just outright inane questions by local adventurers about the newly posted laws next to the stockades in Beregost. After the questions were exhausted, the Amnian magistrates and their soldier troop headed back south to Athkatla, cursing having to have spent any time in the barbaric north among what they termed northern mongrels. Before the Amnian group left, some may have seen and overheard one Amnian magistrate stating that she was going to talk with Governess Benino of Beregost briefly, possibly doing so, then returning later.

Some locals afterward may gossip about this possibly coinciding with a recent execution of a convicted public official. Whether the two events are related or not is also rumored to be jabbered about in local taverns.

Rumor spreads that three individuals, two of Lathander and one of Tyr, met with The Most Radiant of Lathander Kelddath Ormlyr in Beregost yesterday in The Song of the Morning and then soon after went to meet with Sheriff de Oca of Beregost. Some may have overheard that Sheriff de Oca asked the three to volunteer to assist him with a local corruption investigation. The three then returned to the local temple of Lathander and after possibly deliberating for a while, returned to the Sheriff's office, allegedly agreeing to assist him in a private capacity as volunteer investigators, with no independent authority and with no formal cooperation of the church of Lathander.

As the first rays of light gently fall upon the Song of the Morning, a trio is seen quietly conversing with Kelddath Ormlyr in the main part of the temple.

After a time the Most Radiant shoos them on their way good-naturedly and the three step out into the chilled rain of daybreak as they enter the streets of Beregost.

Curious early risers note that two of the figures are instantly recognizable. One is a knight with a golden cloak known as the Commander Eldarian Al’maire. The other is a blonde haired woman that goes by the name of Lady Lafayette. The third figure is a curious one, however. Cloaked and hooded, the man’s features aren’t easily identified.

Eyes wander and follow the three as they make their way through the streets, their faces set and determined on a particular goal. They are seen knocking on numerous doors and confronting those within before being let inside for private conversations.

Late evening falls upon the town as the last of the sun’s rays slink away to find their peaceful slumber. Rumors circulate that after the town cascades into darkness, the cloaked-and-hooded man breaks from the knightly types, and is seen heading north. The other two move into the center of town, only to knock on a peculiar house, one that no longer holds residence.

Word is sketchy between rumor-mongers after that. Some say the two knights did not leave the house after entering. Others state they saw them hurry back to the Song of the Morning as soon as the knock on the door had been left unanswered.

One thing is certain, however.

Something brews in Beregost.

The Dawnknight’s footsteps were anxious and hurried as he followed after Ed.

Over here!” The man had yelped and then his finger pointed toward the field near The Song of the Morning.

Eldarian squinted his eyes briefly as his gaze moved from the man’s finger to the targeted location in the distance; disbelief etched onto his features. “Yes, sir; how did you come across it?

Ed frowned toward Eldarian as the gravity of the situation tangled in his words. “I was going for a walk back to my brother's house and I nearly stepped on the poor gnome's face! Is it dead?

Eldarian thought it best to let the man go back to his business and leave the matter to authorities so he gave him a few coin for his honesty and troubles and sent him on his way.

He then moved toward the body for examination, kneeling down beside the decaying form with a soured and serious expression for a lengthy amount of time.

Sometime later a blonde woman by the name of Lady Lafayette could be seen hovering near the body as well. The two talk quietly as they examine the scene and the corpse before the woman parts ways from the Dawnknight and moves back into the temple.

After the investigation is completed Eldarian can be seen talking to Templar Brian outside of the Song of the Morning. Brian nods his head to the quiet words before moving near the field with a few clergy members to carry the body into the temple.

A letter is dispatched to the local authorities.

How much more could this town take?

After being out of Beregost for sometime in Crimmor or elsewhere to the south of Amn, the well-reputed and well-liked Amnian tax collector and academic, Antolina Burgoz, is rumored to be returning to Beregost for the first time since she was charged with tax embezzlement, the charges then promptly dropped after she presented an honorable alibi to Sheriff de Oca. She is said to be speaking at a seminar event hosted by representatives of the Amnian-Beregost Commerce Society and sponsored by Crymmar's Holding Company in a presentation on the Amnian economy, including members of the well-known Craumerdaun Amnian noble horse breeding family of Beregost. A respected authority on the Amnian economy, economic theory, business ethics, and a graduate of and professor at the premier Amnian Institute of Economics at the University of Athkatla, Burgoz is likely to draw a significant interested audience well beyond the organization hosting her, especially given the recent controversy surrounding her. The Amnian-Beregost Commerce Society posts ads in Beregost and Nashkel asking for those of a lawful demeanor to assist with event security, marketing, and ushering, being promised compensation of 2000 gold each for the task.

((Event to be held on Saturday, January 3 at 6pm GMT.

Group of Hellstorm crew's specialists arrive to just north side of Beregost. It seems that the group isn't going to enter the town itself quite just yet. Captain can be sighted yelling commands and insults about tent which they have apperantly troubles to set up. Captain's weathered flag is lifted, a white howling wolf figure on a dark blue banner.

Perhaps the group is waiting for reinforcments of not so notable-figures of the crew; Sword arms and deckhands before they enter the town?

((The Hellstorm crew will take part to the event if winds allow this, see you fellas at Saturday!))

Rumor spreads that the economist and tax collector Antolina Burgoz was brazenly attacked at her public lecture in Beregost yesterday. It is unclear in rumor what her condition actually is after being attacked, although many seem to gossip that she is still alive. It is also rumored that an alleged assassin that attacked Burgoz was killed and that the assassin's body is being held in the Beregost Barracks and also that a man was briefly detained after the attack, but then released after being questioned by the Amnian authorities. Gossip is spoken throughout Beregost that at least temporarily guards are visibly posted throughout the town in greater number.

Word spreads that Governess Benino issued public statements today condemning the violence, giving her sincere and heartfelt condolences to Burgoz and her family, and in having the Council of Six appoint a replacement for the tax districts that Burgoz oversaw as an Amnian tax collector if necessary.
