1351 Campaign - Act 1: Warlock's Crypt and the Plague in BG

Unread post by DM Theophanies »

Wraith

The echoes of a legion of howling wraiths flooded through the still of the night within the Western Troll Claws... and the squealing of one extremely terrified gnome.

Image

They were upon him, or perhaps encompassed in them is a better term. They were everywhere, chasing that gnome for days... or was it weeks... he had lost track. Hungry, desperate, sick. He had discovered Warlock's Crypt and it had cost him all of his companions. He was preparing to give up when suddenly he found help, adventurers coming to his aid and getting him out of those mountains and trying to heal him, though his cough returned several times.

The Spreading Sickness

The group fought their way back to Baldur's Gate as they had promised the gnome. By the time they reached the East Gate District, several of them shared the gnomes coughing and weakness. In a wise decision they headed to the Temples of Ilmater and Tyr for healing and council. Their story was told as the priests saw to the infected then the priests set out to prepare for the worst. The guards were alerted and the gnomes ship was locked down to prevent any further spread.

Its said that a mysterious coughing sickness is doing the rounds in the Harbour district. Warehouse workers are struggling through their shifts, and some fishermen have even stayed ashore while their ships have sailed. The harbour remains bustling though, with those who are not sick thankful for the extra work available.

Over the course of the day a number of adventurers sought out those on the streets who were showing signs of sickness, seeing them cured with potions provided by the Temple of Ilmater, or the blessings of Umberlee and other gods.

Mysterious Gray Feather Plague

Unread post by QuinnOrrin »

After stumbling upon the strange illness infecting dock workers in Baldur's Gate, Quinn and the other temporary adventurer laborers take to the task of uncovering its source... but don't manage to get very far. Defaulting to getting the illness purged from the living as their primary goal, the group headed over to the Temple of Umberlee, saying a pray in her name in order to get the priests to start healing up those in the warehouses and who have already fallen ill.

Afterwards, Quinn and Meratis decided to give one of the dead men they'd found some peace. Following the address to Pete's home, they knock on the door... either to find Pete lived alone, or to give a notice to any family he might have. It's just the decent thing to do...

Still, where did this plague come from? Where had Pete gotten to in order to contract such a fatal disease. A slight cough turning to a hacking up of gray feathers, unconsciousness, and ultimately death. Whatever this was, and despite its ability to be cured by priests, the Gate was being struck with something very nasty.

Upon hearing the rumors of this mysterious illness, a priestess of Sune by the name of Tegan goes looking for the information. She asks towns folk and who ever else is near about the information. Finding herself at the fist, she gives her details and asks if she can have an audience with the person in charge. After that she goes to the temples to offer her aid and find any more people who may be infected.

Herran and Ylu find a child coughing violently, Herran runs to the Ilmatari Temple and talks to brother Marcus, while Ylu stays with the child.

Brother Marcus comes with an armload of potions and the hunt begins. Herran, and by this time many others begin the search for any and all showing any signs of coughing, sending them to where brother Marcus is now passing out potions.

Ylu, in the mean time leads others to make sure the plague is not spreading to the other districts also searching the warehouses to try and find a source of this disease.

They post notices of free potions being offered by the Ilmatari temple for any who may have a cough.

In the temple, Tegan, the tall shapely girl with red hair, notices the two people Herran and Ylu. She introduces herself as Tegan, a priestess of Sune and offers her aid to them. She then helps to administer the potions and doing everything she can to make all the people feel comfortable while trying to contain the illness.

Rumor spreads that some Baldur's Gate caravandock loaders at the East Gate of the city request aid of folks to help unload caravan crates from a caravan from Waterdeep and place the cargo in a warehouse in the Docks District of Baldur's Gate, offering 100 gold a person in return. A few adventurers are said to have responded to the job offer and the dock loaders tell them that they need extra hands as a few of their shift left a note that they were out sick from work. The adventurers were then seen by some to take the crates to the dock warehouse, only one of them dropping a crate on the way. Arriving at the warehouse, local gossip says that a warehouse worker greets them and tells them to put the crates inside the warehouse. It is said that the group then headed into the warehouse and did not emerge for some time. A few of them later were seen leaving with one having a moderate cough and heading to the East Gate district. A few later left and headed to the temple of Umberlee nearby. A while later, some priests of Umberlee came by the warehouse and were seen carrying out bags of what smelled to onlookers like ash or soot.

As the long hard day comes near a close, Ylu and Herran invite Tegan back to the theater, to discuss, the days work, relax a bit ... and of course talk of Sune, Herran introducing himself as a follower of Lliira and Ylu as one from Chauntea

Throughout the week Koryeneer can be seen handing out supplies to those in need or afflicted by the recent sickness. As he hands out blankets a slight shake can be seen in his hands. Perhaps tremors or some such left over from his recovery from the sickness. He smiles courtly and helps all he can. Silently praying to Hoar for this to be avenged grasping a small coin in his hand as he does.

In the early afternoon, an elegantly dressed man holding a cloth over his mouth could be seen moving hastily through the docks district. He makes wide circles around any locals he encounters, increasing his pace. As one plain looking woman attempts to approach him near the Eastgate District he springs to the side, stepping away from her. Muttering could be heard through the cloth, panic evident in his voice.

"Yes, yes, I'm sure one of the temples can offer you plenty of aid!"

He then quickly takes out several coins and drops them on the ground before moving towards the Eastgate District at near running speed.

Felicienne, discretely makes her rounds in the docks, inquiring about the rumored shipment in regards to contents and locale.

Rumors and observations from around the Harbor District:

Those who walk through the Harbour District would notice the occaisional worker and citizen here and there with a cough, perhaps those too poor or too greedy to miss any work through sickness.

There are those who take precautions though, perhaps having seen notices or heard of the proliferation of a few days before, who visit the temples of Umberlee and Ilmater for aid.

Overall activity in the docks continues on; this part of the city sees many temporary sicknesses brought in from afar, and while this one seems nasty no one appears too worried about it, rather than being concerned about their livelihood.

The warehouse being watched accepts a consignment of wheat. Later room is made by shipping a consignment of dyes from inside to a vessel at the docks, before bales of wool are loaded into the warhouse.

Rumors circulate through the seedier taverns of Baldur's Gate of the discovery of Warlock's Crypt by a crazy treasure hunting gnome. They whisper of menacing spires, massive towers and deadly liches wielding devastating magic. Although an entertaining rumor for any drunkard, most consider it to be gnomish tall tales and move onto whatever rumor may well catch their attention next.
