1351 Campaign - Act 3: The Army Eternal

Unread post by DM Golem »

In 1351, the Duke of Elturel sent two companies his Hellriders to assist Baldur's Gate against the rising tide of the walking dead in the north, under the pragmatic soldier Captain Raman. They spent their first months operating north of the city, tracking the movements of undead in the Fields of the Dead, the Trollclaws, the Troll Hills and the southern High Moor.

Previously they had encountered a large, shambling horde of zombified undead, surrounding impressive looking golems which disappeared north, scattered splinter groups left behind by that horde, and displaced trolls. But then, in Flamerule 1351, they discovered something different...

Image
Mindful of the implications of their most recent skirmishes with these armoured and orderly undead, and at the behest of the Dukes of Baldur's Gate, the Hellriders approached Kraak Helzak with news before circulating far and wide a copy of the report they prepared.

Lord Revenark and the dwarves of Kraak Helzak.

Thankyou for your welcome.

Our scouting reports are compiled. We have circulated this to the Dukes of Baldur’s Gate, and at their request the various factions fighting the undead menace.

Here is how things stand:

Hidden: show
Image
Key:
Yellow Area: Rough area of the shambling horde.
Green Line: Picket line of Undead soldiery.
Green Question Mark: We do not know what lies behind the picket line.
Blue X: Narrow Pass
Orange X: Ambush site
Pink Area Area: Open Terrain
Red Circle: Kheldrivver
Dark Green X: Kraak Helzak, estimated. Our maps of the Trollclaws are incomplete.

Scouting reports relating to the various sites marked on the map follow. Suggested uses of each terrain appended. If you have plans which require specific terrain, we can try and find suitable ground for you.

Yellow Area

This is the estimated area that the shambling horde of undead has reached, given its last known line and speed of march. The prediction is several days old and contact has not been maintained with this horde, given its direction heads into the wilds.

Green Line

This is the line of “pickets” of organised undead. Although there is not a solid line of undead, the distance between each picket of undead is that you cannot avoid one band without falling under the eyes of another, without the use of great stealth. The frequency of pickets therefore depends on the terrain.

The various pickets are all formed of ten or less armoured skeletons, each with a sunburst around the letter ‘T’ emblazoned on their chests. Their armour is archaic in form. When the skeletons are brought to battle they fight in close order as disciplined soldiers. No controllers are visible. These are presumed to be with the reinforcements. They fight defensively and await for reinforcements which always come within ten to thirty minutes. We think that this time variation represents local terrain. Reinforcements are numbered in scores, perhaps a hundred or more. We have not engaged these in force.

The picket line is moving slowly in the direction of Kheldrivver and the Trollclaws. Advance appears to be methodical but intermittent. If it remains at its current intent, it will also infringe upon the northern Fields of the Dead.

Green Question Mark

We do not know what occurs behind the picket line. We think this is the intent of the picket line. We have a proposed plan for taking a look behind the picket line below. The other option would be to send stealthy scouts to sneak between the pickets.

Narrow Pass
Hidden: show

Image
There are many trails through the higher Troll Hills, but there is a spur of mountain which is particularly hard to traverse. One trail moves through it. It is the obvious route to take if the pickets guard a larger force moving towards Kheldrivver, Kraak Helzak and the Fields of the Dead. Otherwise it is necessary to go miles out of the way in either direction. This trail narrows severely at one point, which would be a good place to occupy to delay any advance. It would allow battle against superior numbers with flanks secure, as the mountains on either side will be very hard to traverse.

A simple plan to use this pass would be to hold it with heavy troops and see what comes. A small, heavy detachment would cause anything advancing behind the picket line much difficulty.

Ambush Site

Hidden: show
Image
This is another point which lies on the obvious path towards Kheldrivver, Kraak Helzak and the Fields of the Dead, this time down in the foothills. There is a small valley between the highest peaks and the range of foothills, and a trail moving up and out is very usable by large numbers of soldiers. This forms the obvious route if the current direction is maintained.

It would also be possible to fight a straight up pitched battle in the valley.

It would also be possible to try and delay superior numbers in this region, although risky to hold for a long period as it would be easier for an attacker to send flanking forces through foot hills rather than mountains.

We have identified a site, however, which would allow for an ambush to be undertaken once the pickets reach this place. It is a suitable site to allow us to breach the picket line. The plan would be for any picket to be destroyed once it reached the site, to provoke the reinforcements that always come. Then, use hidden troops and the terrain to destroy the reinforcements. At which point my Hellriders can ride hell for leather into the open plain and have a thorough look, before we retreat behind the ambushing party once more.

Open Terrain

Should the pickets reach this area, the terrain will allow my men to harry them, and what lies behind them from horseback. However any attempts to slow what lies behind would require the fighting of a set piece battle.

Kheldrivver
Hidden: show
Image
The ruined towns fortifications are in good condition. It would not take much work to have them serviceable and they would form the strongest bastion in the Troll Hills and Troll Claws area short of Kraak Helzak itself.

If there is a need to block, rather than delay, the advance towards Kraak Helzak this would be a good choice, as it is not only suitable for defense, but also harbouring troops to sally forth. The only worry outside of this would be an advance up the river. We have not scouted this possibility.

Signed

Know that I, Cranston Birchbrew along with my traveling companion Laira have managed to sneak by the picket lines which the Hellrider's were unable to pass. It was a difficult task, but we managed it without alerting the undead to our presence and what we have found is nothing short of catastrophe for the region. The green question mark on the map provided by the Hellrider scouts is a third undead army...and they are legion.

After spying a group of reinforcements behind the picket lines, we skirted around them and climbed a large hill; crossing a bridge we looked out at the valley below to find scores upon scores of companies of undead. I say companies because that is what they are; not a hoard of mindless, shambling corpses, but a true military force. They appear disciplined, orderly, and able to employ battle tactics. We must not underestimate the danger posed by this new force. The soldiers all had the markings of a sunburst with the letter "T" and in the midst of this army was a blue glow. Within the glow appeared a monstrosity of a skeleton, twice the height and breadth of a man. We dared not linger as this unnatural behemoth appeared to be searching for us, and it was only a matter of time before we would be found.

We made our way back as quickly as we were able and now leave it to you to begin planning for a defense against this army. I will make myself available as a scout, but I am no military commander or soldier and haven't the slightest clue how to defend against this new enemy. I only know that we must gather our forces and act as one if we are to have any chance, for if we allow each Race or City or Nation to fend for itself, we will surely all perish.

The heroes of the land, drawn from a diverse range of local factions and adventurers, discussed this new threat. A plan of action was formed.

The current plan as I understand it.
1. Organize a group and set a time to retake Kheldriver. (check)
///DM Golem has set a date and time of Saturday Aug 22 at 20:00 GMT
2. Establish a Base camp or way point somewhere along the ford. Clear this area and fortify it.

3. Continue on to Kheldriver and retake the fort and secure the supplies.

4. Hold the fort until the EDE and the dwarfs arrive to secure the fort and relieve us.

The Sword Coast Commercial Exchange has stepped forward and offered there support to this endeavor. I call again to all others singly and as groups for aide in this endeavor offering guards, scouts, archers, healers or supporting magicians.

We will organize our efforts in the Eastern farmlands across from the Radiant Heart Headquarters. If there are any questions or suggestions then I ask that you do so promptly as plans are already set in motion and last minute changes are always difficult to accomplish. The phoenix company should create a camp in troll claw ford. The camp you will create is the most important action for the operations in the north, and is contemporary with my doing in kheldrivver and the passes: none of us can do both.
Can that be added to the list of objectives?

Concerned about the severity of the threats to the north in light of the recent disasters in the Reaching Woods, the Dukes ordered General Scar of the Flaming Fist, and Captain Raman of the Hellriders, to lead a reinforced company of Flaming Fist soldiers as well as the Hellriders in support of any efforts against this threat in the Troll Hills.

Its rumoured that Duke Eltan himself had a hand in the penning of the strategic analysis which was sent to the adventurers planning the northern effort.

DM Golem wrote:Phoenix Company and the Kheldriver Expedition Forces

We have the authority of the Grand Dukes of Baldur’s Gate to reiterate the promises of aid last given when a move on Kheldrivver was first discussed. Namely the aid of the Hellriders and a reinforced company of the Flaming Fist. The Hellriders are expert scouts and skirmishing cavalry, but unsuited to heavy combat (current strength approximately 180. Current commander Captain Raman). The Flaming Fist are some of the finest heavy infantry in Faerun, best suited to heavy combat or the assault or defence of fortified positions (Strength of 150 with support from mages and engineers. Current commander Captain Bresco).

Tactical analysis and composite scouting reports from the Hellriders suggest the following comments on your plans:

Trollclaw Ford

This area is well known to be infested by large numbers of trolls, who aggressively assault every settlement built there. So far these trolls are unaffected by the advance of the undead and it can be expected they would vigorously assault any fortification built. A temporary camp would have to be well garrisoned and stocked for troll fighting.

The difficulty of fortifying a camp against the trolls alone should not be underestimated. For any camp to be worthwhile in battle in the near future it will have to be made of wood, although the existing Hamlet can be incorporated. Supplies of wood would have to be brought on site as there is nothing locally and someone with siege expertise would be best called upon to devise the fortifications. Establishing a camp will require a garrison beyond the one off effort to clear the area. The Flaming Fist could achieve all this with their engineers and soldiers, but would be unavailable for other duties.

Our tactical analysis suggests Kheldrivver would act as a better base for forays into the Troll Hills or defending the passage into the Trollclaws due to its prexisting stone fortifications, and that supply convoys might be better safeguarded by vigorous escorts. Convoy escort could be undertaken by the Hellriders or the Flaming Fist, but they would be unable to undertake other work while doing so. Convoy escort duty might be better fitted for less well trained troops. Nevertheless a camp at the Trollclaw Ford would protect from any flank advance down the Winding Water.

Kheldrivver's Current State

Hellrider patrols pass the ruin frequently and have even spent the night there from time to time. Most of the village is undamaged. There was some damage to the fortifications during the last undead assault. Repair will require stone and expert craftsmen, although temporary repairs can likely be effected by rubble and wood. The Flaming Fist would be of assistance in repairing Kheldrivver’s fortifications if required, but would need supplies of stone for high quality repairs, which would also take time.

The village is currently haunted by stray trolls and disorganised bands of undead, possibly left over from the last attack. Resistance is not likely to be heavy but any sweep will need to be thorough to catch all the undead. If repairs are planned a sweep will need to include the surrounding area, as the undead in the hinterlands tend to be drawn to activity in the ruin.

The supplies left in Kheldrivver are quite old now. Hellrider patrols have been subsisting on them when they visit the area. Current reports are that it is difficult to find anything that has not been spoiled or eaten by trolls.

Undead in the Troll Hills

The undead picket line previously reported by the Hellriders began to move three days ago. When the Hellriders began to scout the picket to monitor its movements, the patrols were attacked and driven off. One, however, failed to return, and is presumed wiped out. For some reason after this engagement the picket line stopped moving. It advanced a total of four miles before halting.

The Hellriders are able to keep a detailed knowledge of the movement of the undead picket line but only if they are not called away on other duties.

Queries on this report may be left at the Flaming Fist Headquarters.

Lich Vignette: Why I Fight

The image was perfect. The thin, blackened frames of burned out buildings, the layers of ash and charred matter which crunched underfoot, sending up little gouts of dust that marked the passage of the General’s armoured form, and those of his hyspaspist bodyguards. Ahead lay the Temple of Mystryl, a mere shell of soot-stained stone, gutted by fire. The fire had consumed most signs of the battle, but here and there the tarnished arms of the combatants could be seen. Each time the General saw one of the crude axes and cleavers of the orcs, the rage boiled in him once again.

The doors lay broken and warped, the heat having marred their beautiful, gilded form. The General held up his hand, bidding his retainers to wait outside, and stepped through the doorway. Little was left inside of the temple’s grandeur, the flames having scorched away the murals, and the claws of the orcs having snatched away the treasures. Yet still, the General saw far too much. He descended on one knee, his hand resting on a shattered, cloven skull, his eyes boring into the evidence of the massacre around him.

Here, where they had learned magic as children, and prayed to the goddess when adults, a great crowd of the people of Seventon had sought refuge from the wrath of the orcs. And here, while the General’s troops were away fighting on the borders, and while other soldiers gave way to panic and despair, here they had died.

It was then that the General’s hope died, and he understood what sacrifices he would have to make. His hand clutched the broken skull in rage, the shards of bone cutting into his pale flesh. It was here he made his promise. “Never again.”

The General’s gauntleted, bony hand closed around the gemstone, bringing the programmed illusion – the memory – to an end. This was all he had now, these enchanted images of the past, recorded when he still had all his senses, when he could still fear, still weep, and still feel. He had thought the memories would remind him of his purpose, and they did; staving off the madness that claimed so many who made the change. But each year they seemed more distant, more removed from him. Each year he felt the Netheril of old slip further away.

But my duty remains, despite it all. Orbedal will be protected.

The clatter of armoured boots was heard outside his tent. A hyspaspist stepped inside. Asmoniath. With me from the start. “My General. One of the captives was pure enough.”

“Bring him in.” The General eschewed the telepathic bond, so that the captive could overhear.

Let the man know his fate is in the balance.

Two more hyspaspists brought him in, shackled and chained. Trailing behind was the Logistician, Hieronaima, cradling his stave ready for the ritual to come. The captive thudded to his knees as bony hands forced him down. There was defiance in his gaze, but it wilted as he looked up to the General’s towering, armoured form, and the soulless swirl of his eyes.
“I’ll tell you nothing!” The man barked, voice shrill with fear.

“Incorrect.” Said the General, a bone hand reaching out to clasp his chin in a vice like grip, turning his head first left, and then right, as if examining a prize specimen. Then his eyes flared as he began to probe the man’s mind with magic, sifting through memories.

It was not a pleasant experience. The man – Godrin of the Hellriders of Elturel – squirmed, crying out in pain as the General moved beyond the surface, beyond the tactical data of recent days, beyond the quickest routes south towards the General’s objective. Such information was valuable but not why this man was chosen.

Instead, the General went deeper into the man’s psyche, looking through memories of a wife, a child, a sister, a mother, a father. He examined the man’s love of horses, and his joy at the freedom of being on horseback. He examined the man’s excessive gambling. He examined the mans dislike for a local mage in Elturel. He watched the man hurl curses at the mage. He watched the man befriend a half-elf tailor. Godrin was weeping by the time the General released him, no secrets left.

A base mind formed for simple pursuits. Tolerant of elves. His culture is not remotely Netherese, despite his watered down ancestry.

“Phalangite.” Said the General.

Hieronaima did not speak, she never did. ::A shame he was fit for nothing more:: Her voice echoed across their telepathic link as she raised her stave, a green glow appearing upon its end.

The General opened his palm and blasted Godrin with negative energy. He withered, his life drained, while Hieronaiman chanted the Soldier’s Binding. Imperfect Godrin may have been, but he would make the perfect footsoldier. He may have known nothing of Netheril in life; in death, he would protect its last vestige for eternity.

This night, when sleep overcomes the followers of Lathander, as well as anyone who has prayed to Lathander or commenced a new venture in the last month, a vison comes to haunt their rest.

It comes as a dream. But it is remembered upon waking. Every single aspect of it.

Yet the dream itself is misty and indistinct. It is like watching someone talk on the other side of a glass window; a step removed from actual contact.

A dark plain or desert, cloaked in shadow.

In the desert, a lonely ruin. Fanged and tusked creatures pick over its bones.

Then, the shadows cast aside by a burning, radiant sun, hanging heavy over the horizon.

Searing through the ruin, immolating the scavenging creatures, without even a chance to scream.

Image

A figure advances out of the radiance, silhouetted against the light. It advances closer, and closer. Looming large over the dreamer.

Image
And a voice grinds out. It is loud, a shout even. As if the one speaking had to force its way over a great distance – yet the dreamer is sat far too close.

”THE FAITHFUL, THE JUST, THE ENLIGHTENED. HARKEN. BARBARIAN TRESPASS HAS BEEN MADE UPON THE GROUNDS OF ORBEDAL INVIOLATE. THERE WILL BE JUST RECOMPENSE, JUST PUNISHMENT. HARKEN TO THESE WORDS. I GRANT AUDIENCE SO THAT YOU WILL SPREAD THE MESSAGE TO THE UNENLIGHTENED.”

Then, a flash of light. Before the images are replaced with a view of the Fields of the Dead, and a stone structure just north of it. Beside which there appears a portal.

Those who receive the dream who have the craft to interpret spells, or have a connection with Lathander, understand something of the vision’s source. It is not divine, it not from Lathander, it is arcane.

((((Interpretation of the nature of the vision requires Spellcraft 10 and divine spellcasting of Lathanderite faith; or Spellcraft 25 for anyone else.

An event will take place on Tuesday 25th at 20:00. A portal will be set upon the Fields of the Dead. Attendance is open to any who become aware of the vision by whatever means: Whether they are told by another PC, are Lathanderite or prayed to Lathander, or have begun a new venture in the last month.

Death during this event will lead to a

Culling the Trolls

Following on from the War Council the Phoenix Company leader Terri Lalani assembled a large group of adventurers in the Eastern Farmlands with the objective of securing the Trollclaw ford and the abandoned village of Kheldrivver against the undead in the north.

The Hellriders under Captain Raman joined the effort, although they might have seemed a bit exasperated with the chaotic adventurers. They brought a suggested plan, that if the Trollclaw ford was to be held it would be important to slay the biggest troll in the region and cull back the troll numbers enough that the ford would not just be overrun by living foes, and so be no use against the dead.

The adventurers split into three groups at Captain Raman's suggestion. One heading straight to Kheldrivver. One to the Troll Claw ford to hold it and cull nearby trolls. And one to hunt the troll king.

There were indeed many trolls at all three locations.

There were undead in Kheldrivver but mainly, there were trolls.

After a hard fight, the troll king was slain in his lair.

The ford was held, despite defensive positions being outflanked by aquatic trolls.

Kheldrivver was retaken after hard fighting, the number of adventurers present having drawn many trolls and wandering undead to the place. Most of the supplies had been spoiled over time, but some long preserved rations were retrieved.

The troll population in the Trollclaws is now quieted. While they still remain a menace, it will now be feasible to occupy the Trollclaw Ford if the neccessary and garrison is installed.

Kheldrivver is cleared of foes, as are its surroundings. No doubt hostile creatures will trickle back, but the fortification itself is ready to be occupied.

Currently, the Hellriders have ridden to hold the place and keep it undead and troll free. They are taking the time to rest after a month of hard fighting and riding. They intend to ride out in a few days, however, and are not happy with garrison work.

Both the Trollclaw Ford and Kheldrivver are cleared for occupation at the behest of the War Council.

Corwin would come and talk to a blind old man, telling him that he with his friend are going to Kheldrivver, to setup a hospital and a shrine to Silvanus there, a task which may be of great importance soon. He would offer him to come and aid.

Corwin would arrive to the Kheldrivver in the late afternoon with the small caravan from Soubar.
Quite young and quiet monk, Gabriel, and probably the blind old man would accompany him. They would have some load of healing supplies with them.

Corwin would seek captain Raman of Hellriders, and would ask him for permission to setup a hospital, and small shrine to Silvanus in fortified town part. If they would allowed to,

They would look for a medium-size building preferably inside the inner circle of town walls, with biggest patch of non-cobbles earth near it, but not to far away from main road. If possible, not far from it should be the well. Corwin would pray for there to be found at least smallest Oak grove, but they would not be discouraged if they would not find any.

They would start to clean and mend the building and area near it, with the well if there would be found one, given priority. Most of mundane work would be performed by Gabriel, fast and strong and agile as he is, while Corwin would spend hours consecrating would-be hospital and its surrounding, purifying water in the well with the power granted to him by Silvanus, and speaking with Hellriders Сhaplain if there would be any, empowering and refreshing key consecrated areas found in the town, apparently at its main gate.

Probably late at night, if there would be no even smallest Oaken grove near chosen building, Cowrin would plant an acorn in good quiet place near it, preferably behind, where not many people goes near often, and where would be most free place for future tree to grow while not disturbing surrounding streets and walls. Next day there could be seen smallest sprout. In the morning he would setup small shrine there and fence it, using material found in the city. Purifying ground and consecration goes without question.

They would work hard to prepare the place to possible arrival in near future of dozens and dozens of wounded, and prepare storage rooms for supplies, rooms for personnel who may come of be allocated to the hospital services when time comes, living premises and surgery rooms, hospital wards, and so on. They would make best use of survived undead invasion furniture from other houses, and if some of soldiers or other town inhabitants, adventurers would offer their help they would gladly accept it, though they would not ask or request any. Corwin would provide shrine services and guidance and just listen to soldiers when they would feel eager to talk and open to him, but prefer it not take long, because there would be very much work and very short time. he would bless and pray (ward) for them when they would go scouting or cleaning stray undead or trolls, and take other actions action if state of emergency would require so.

Gabriel would occasionally, when he would have free minute, go out in the forest near the town, looking for useful in healing herbs at untouched patches of land, scouting, moving so fast that it may look as if he disappear in one place and reappear in other, learn surrounding land, meeting newcomers (though not exactly meeting, but overseeing from the distance that they would come safe and right way, only interfering if he'll see something goes wrong), aid Hellriders patrols.

Other man, grim, wrinkly and almost constantly under effect of barkskin spell may, or may not be seen occasionally there, around the hospital, though no one, if asked, would tell that he seen when and how exactly he came in town.

Members of the Everwatch Knights, Song of the Morning and allies arrive to the city of Scornubel finding it under curfew. Lady Ambermantle and her advisors received them at court. Pleads we’re made to further evacuations and there were talks of defense. Their talks however were cut short as guards rushed into the building warning of activity to the east. Leaving through the east gate of Scornubel the horizon of the forest turned black as undead emerged from the forest.
Image
Immediate orders were spread to the Red Shields of all nonessential guards to make for the east gate. There they gathered upon the walls and before the gate. In front of them the red haired bull of a dame surveyed the growing number cloaks of red pacing along them with a steel demeanor. As the cloaks came still so did she standing at ease before them. Her voice carried loud over them.

“Men, heed your ears to me. Beset upon us are the machinations of the corruption of man. Wicked is she, Talona, who has poisoned the minds of men, led them astray from the beauty and purity which rich in this world of ours. In their delusions they have created all manner of soulless abomination on her false light, to which we now stand warden to.”

“You may feel a tremble in your wrist, your breath coming quicker than it should. I have felt the churn in your heart in battles prior myself. The fear that your sword will slip, or your shield will falter to its hold. Whatever might befall us it is in you to pick up your sword and keep fighting on. Your arms may tire, your resolve tested. It is in you to fight on.”

Her statuesque posture broke as took step to the Red Shields repeating her pace of inspection at a closer step. The steel character of her face held firm cant towards them as her voice rose in vigor. Behind her the black of the horizon creeped slowly along the eastern bank.

“The gods greatest gift to man was our humanity. The nature of compassion and fellowship to your brothers and sisters. The ferocity of the courage of man to stand not only for ourselves, but for all we hold dear. The bards paint the great men like Samular Caradoon to be more than man. But nay, he was just that, a man as yourself. Within the heart of each man holds rise to what named the legends before him. The will to fight on.”

“We stand in the light of the age of humanity. Might there be a day to put an end to this age as those have ended before it. But today is not that day. We raise shields sons and daughters of humanity with faith in our heart and steel in our hands. Let tenacity that is mankind be heard from the heavens this day.”

Her strides came to a halt once more, her chest carried high with pride looking to those gathered on the walls. Her voice cried out once more before orders of deployment to the walls were made.

“Ever the dawn rises!”

I am unfortunately no stranger to war and can render herbal medicines as well as self directed healing to the wounded. I am also no stranger to hard work and can help distribute foodstuffs, rations and all other manner of duties needed for such a campaign. Should you wish my aid you can find me at my vineyards near Beregost."

*The old blind monk then meanders on his way, tapping his staff as he walks to feel the path.*

Monty, graciously accepting inclusion in what he would consider the most important of tasks would accompany gladly, mostly in silent contemplation. When able he would travel on his own feet, his walking staff ever leading the way before him. Laden on the caravan would be casks of wine from his vineyards near Beregost and in the medical supplies a small cask of brandy for various purpose, distilled from the same wine. Monty would also bring various healing salves and unguents of his own making to help the most grievously injured.

Upon reaching Kheldriver Monty would take direction from Corwin, helping to clean and ready the makeshift hospital for use. He would spend many hours arranging things and then walking about, committing the layout to memory to aid his movement about the area. When not industriously cleaning or arranging Monty would spend several hours each day in quiet contemplation, staff laid across his lap.

Other tasks Monty would busy himself with as needed. Testing food and water for spoilage as well as helping tend any sort of livestock or homesteading to help support what could well turn into a prolonged siege. If asked he would offer information from his years in military service to help prepare the area for the fallout of what is sure to be a gruesome battle. He would offer counsel to comfort the spirit and to help prepare the locals for what to expect.

Perhaps most importantly he would take interest in the young monk from afar, listening attentively and, if asked, offering guidance and experience to the youth. Eventually he would invite Gabriel to morning meditations, focus and exercise before beginning each day. Monty would prepare and move through dozens of forms in a private area, both barehanded and utilizing his walking staff.

Corwin would heartily welcome Squires Loriah and Junior, and together with his companions they would do their best to distribute supplies in larders and swept and cleaned storages, beds and blankets inside rooms where wounded could be received and allocated, prepare tents close to entrance in case place in rooms and attics and corridors would become not enough. Pots, pans and so on would go to the pantry, though select best and cleanest pots, glassware and knives etc. would be took greater care of and be prepared to be used for surgery needs.

Given a chance, Corwin would ask Squires of their Order, listening without giving judgments or opinion, and appear more thoughtful then usual.

If Loriah and Junior would mention that they are going to survey and secure surroundings, Gabriel would ask them if he would be welcomed to accompany Squires in the task. If the answer would be positive, he would follow them at some distance (( he is no stealth specialist to hide in close sight )), but if any fight would arise, Gabriel would join in an instant, so fast as if he was already there.

The Fortress Village of Kheldrivver is now occupied by a reinforced company of Flaming Fist Soldiers, whose engineers prepare defences against any potential attack. The soldiers are wary, they have read the report their commander circulated.

"Look lively lads! Three days time and that General of the undead army is going to come right out of the Troll Hills and show up here! He's going to meet a bunch of bigwigs on the fields below and learn if it will be peace or war. Reckon the decisions war, because none of us want to let him massacre folk in Kraak Helzak or Baldur's Gate. Its likely we'll get attacked afore long. So keep a sharp eye!"

And out in the Troll Hills, the Hellriders resume their scouting mission, keeping eyes on another group of soldiers, who are also waiting.

Waiting silently.

Waiting motionlessly.

Waiting tirelessly.

Waiting for the moment they are given the order to march.

And Captain Raman of the Hellriders circulates another report to the allies and adventurers of the coast who stand against this deathless menace.

War Council

The dead in the Troll Hills are up to something. The picket line is still stationary, they haven't moved, but they are letting us see a block of soldiers forming up behind the line. A couple of hundred strong at least. There's no picket blocking us in this part, we can ride far enough to get a good view of this group. Its like they are showing us that there is a force ready to move imminently.

Captain Raman

A curious Valamyr wanders by Kheldrivver, more then a little concerned. The tall human, clad in silver and purple full plate gazes upon the skeptical, cupping his chin.

I can't very well let The Sword Coast be overrun by the rabble. Perhaps even enemies can come to common ground against this menace mmm? Seems I picked the right time to find allies....ho..ho. Whose in charge here?

He begins walking in the direction of Captain Raman, his armor complaining with every step.

Hellrider Scouts bring in a new report. The block of undead that Captain Raman reported has begun to march. Not east, towards Kheldrivver, or South, towards Baldur's Gate, but north and west, disappearing into the Trollbark Forest. A party of Hellriders followed it inside, but is maintaining a safe distance. If the skeleton soldiers carry on in this direction and at the same speed, they will emerge onto the High Moor within two days.
