1351 Metaplot Ending and reveal

Unread post by DM Bloodlust »

The defenders were hard pressed. The Palace District had been overrun, with the palace and a few lone mansions standing like silver towers in a tide of undead that washed over the district. The eastern wall had been well defended, and even fortified with elaborate and supercharged suncannons and a few artillery pieces by the Everwatch knights. The western wall, overlooking the Dock's District, was still holding, but so fractured, so damaged, that it would not hold up to another assault. The army of the new dawn fought on, finding itself having reached the city walls and entered it, pushed back by the undead. Forest spirits assaulted the rear of the undead hordes, until they too were overwhelmed. The undead could not be halted for long.

As the undead hordes washed over the Palace District, they spread into the Dock's district, the last remaining Angel of Decay Haram leading the assault vigorously. Adventurer groups fought alongside defenders of all kinds to stem the tide, and were for a long time successful. Even the twins, two undead abominations, rotten corpses on a grander scale, could not force the defensive positions to collapse. Then, the Blight appeared. A being few had laid their eyes upon, a creature few understood, and less remembered. Lord's Alliance soldiers ran, but even before the Blight could reach them, they fell down. Some withered, as if aging decades within just the span of a few seconds. Others became sacks of flesh, or felt their arms and legs fall off. It was as if death itself was always a step ahead of this creature. This plaguelord. A forest spirit dragon, Ghandiron, appeared in the Palace District, having killed hundreds of undead minions, and put itself in the path of the Blight. This mighty spirit too, fell.

Despite seeing the devastation the Blight caused in his wake and the mighty spirit dragon fall, adventurers rushed to him with raised blades and axes. They all fell instantly, like wheat cut by a scythe. For how could they hope to outdo what the dragon could not? As the bravest and boldest were no longer there, the defensive lines fell back. Word reached the Dock's District, and troops all over the city pulled back to the East gate district, before the great eastern gate, where all of the city's remaining artillery had been positioned inwards towards the city center itself. The Blight, and the undead forces, continued to push towards them, with men and women charging in only to fall like thousands before, sacrificing their lives needlessly.

As the creature reached the central plaza, the Dukes gave the order. The suncannons, fully charged up, blasted away with a pulse that was extremely harmful to the undead, but harmless to the living. Artillery, loaded with anti-magic ammunition, sunburst bombs, firebombs and anything destructive that had been supplied to them by the Thayan enclave, fired. The undead lines were ripped to shreds. More and more kept coming, and more and more were incinerated, but the undead pushed onwards, inch by inch they were getting closer to the artillery lines. The Blight was at its center, and as the suncannons exhausted the last sunstones in a terrifying volley that forced everyone to shield their eyes, something happened. As eyes were once again opened, the Blight had stopped. He appeared stunned. As if turned. Grasping at the opportunity, paladins, clerics, wizards of all walks of life, rushed in. The high priests of the city, in a combined effort, managed to deliver the final blow as the rest had weakened it further, and banished it.

In a brilliant light, the Blight disappeared. The artillery stopped firing. A rallying cry went out amidst the troops, and adventurers, Dukes and soldiers all, charged into the fray. The undead were dumbstruck. The will that drove them on, vanished. The tide had turned, and the undead were losing ground quickly.

One adventurer group spearheaded the assault all the way into the farmlands and to the fields of the dead, where many undead had drifted back towards. Half of them, under Eleanor, pushed through the lines to catch up with a fleeing Haram. The other, under Greil, stayed behind to hold the line, giving the others a chance to finish the powerful Angel of Decay. With much effort, blood and sacrifice, they were victorious but had no time to dwell on their victory. The ones holding the line were being overwhelmed, and so they rushed to gather the group once more. As they cleared the rear of the undead, they were soon met by hundreds of soldiers having done the brunt of the fighting within the city and the farmlands. The path to Baldur's Gate lay clear.

The undead threat was no more.

The following is not as detailed as the last reveal, and most of the information is on what happened during the latter part of the year. It's also somewhat short, because I'm a bit exhausted but I wanted to push this out there. I figured that given the vast scope of the campaign and the many plots, I would instead be open to answering any questions. Do note that all of this is OOC information just for your reading pleasure, to know a bit of what happened behind the scenes and what happened to some characters. It's not to be used IC, as that would be metagaming.

What happened to...

Insen
Hidden: show

Hidden: show
As the undead left the Reaching Woods, Insen was the sole agent who heralded their approach. In one of the ruins on the High Moors, he met with "The Seven", short for the Seven Talons, an assassin group specializing in poisons which he himself once led. They pressed a Waterdeep order, the Order of Rot, into unwilling service, with the help of Griselda and her Gargauth allies. The objective was to finalize a disease that could not be cured by magical means, a lethal one that would spread through water.

Leaving the Seven, Insen established a foothold in the Cloakwood, deeming it advantageous if he could secure the area for the army's arrival. When these plans proved to be unneccessary, he joined up with the undead forces once more. He personally led the initial assault on the western wall, and seeing the strong defence, he took matters into his own hands and destroyed the catapults before retreating, as outlined by Haram and Magmire. He continued the assault on the next day, once again having to retreat, after causing havoc admist the defenders. He finally broke through on the third day, leading the undead forces into the Dock's District, but were slain by Aelcar Lightbringer and Mendel, among many other adventurers. His forces were then pushed back over the walls.
Rakdor
Hidden: show

Hidden: show
As the undead moved south, Rakdor remained behind with a sizeable portion of the army, and besieged the Gold Dragon Ghandiron's lair in the north-western part of the Reaching Woods. The ancient creature held out for 9 days, tirelessly slaughtering Rakdor's forces (some of them given to him by the Joint Venture). Eventually, however, even the mighty gold dragon was overwhelmed and killed. Rakdor then completed his triumph by corrupting the sacred druid stone over the Elder's Corpse just east of the Reaching Woods.

He then moved south, following the army, and besieged Scornubel with what few forces he had left. Using the woods to hide possible troops, he feinted the defenders into sitting idly by for several days while the main undead army moved beyond reach. Eventually the Army of the New Dawn in Scornubel, with Lathanderites led by Eldarian Al'maire, forced a battle that saw the undead forces destroyed and the Lathanderite forces crippled. Only Rakdor escaped the battle, and hastened to rejoin the army and acted as a watchdog for Haram, as the two watched the army's rear with the Pestskull clouds to aid them.

As he reached the city, he was commited on the second day of the siege on the Eastern wall. He was injured in the fighting, and was forced to retreat. Rather than continuing the assault, Rakdor moved on to the Northern wall to aid Magmire on the third day, and together they collapsed the defences there and broke through. He led the forces into the Palace District on the fourth day, but were eventually slain by adventurers there.

Haram
Hidden: show
Image
Hidden: show
Haram spent most of his time close to Magmire, discussing the assault, the stone of insatiable hunger and the events as they unfurled. He was part of the assault of the Palace District on the fourth day directly, and survived the siege only to be caught up with by Eleanor and some adventurers and slain in the fields of the dead. When Magmire was in the field, Haram was the one directing the undead hordes.

Magmire

Following the Reaching Woods victory, Magmire together with the recharged Blight began to move towards Baldur's Gate. She misled scouting groups sent to find more information, and consolidated her forces. After Griselda's failed assassination attempt, Magmire created the Great Pox with the help of some individuals and some drow allies to them, as part of their earlier agreement. She would later use this ritual to craft the Plague Siege Transporters and the Twins as well.

She commanded a flank that attacked a Flaming Fist outpost in the Sharpteeth Forest, and lost all her minions but made sure to be safe. As the siege began in earnest, she was the main architect of the assault together with Haram, disabling the artillery, the support and finally the walls in a 3-stage wave strategy. She engaged on the battlefield personally on the second day on the northern wall, and together with Rakdor and the Great Pox pushed the defenders back. Adventurers Bruno and Emiel sought to duel her, but she swathed them aside like insects. Nothing would stand in her way, she was the one herald. The wall would fall on the next day, but Magmire herself were injured and left the Great Pox to rampage through the Palace District. She withdrew to command the army, and fled once she heard of the Blight's banishment.

A lone druid, having laid in wait for Magmire to leave her hordes behind, sought her out in the Fields of the Dead. He wanted her to join him on a journey to Chult, in bringing back the wild faune to the Sword Coast. She declined, and they discussed some other things before she left. She expressed regret at her own fate. She thought that she would be the one herald, but apparently she was not. She would not live to see the Blight return. Her sole remaining task now was to write a book using her experience and knowledge that would guide the next herald. She left all of her belongings in the fields of the dead, giving the druid her staff of a thousand diseases to aid him in his cause. The rest she didn't need, as she felt strength in her vulnerability and weakness. She walked off into the mist, and have not been seen since...

Amin

Following the Reaching Woods disaster, Amin joined up with the Elder and others of her circle to formulate a plan for retaking their sacred home. The Elder had began summoning up forest spirits, but the process took weeks of rituals, and plenty of prayer and meditation to awoken and negotiate with those who had once been defending the forest itself. Amin was taught by the Elder, and travelled the Reaching Woods for holy sites when she was ambushed by Kagger Redyard, Daggo, Belladonna and Griselda. She survived, and tree strided away. As she returned to inform the Elder, she found that he had been assassinated, and the sacred ritual stone defiled.

She mourned the Elder together with her fellow druids, and was assigned as the temporary leader of the circle. They continued the Elder's plan, and raised an army of forest spirits, that cleansed the Reaching Woods of the undead taint. She eventually found Elyssa's adventuring party near Ghandiron's lair, the last place where undead still resided within the woods, and approached them. They were seeking the gold dragon's aid, and she told them about the prophecy she had learned while being in the Army of the New Dawn, as well as what was assaulting Baldur's Gate. She could not help them defeat the Blight, she said, but she could help in other ways. Not sure of what she meant, the adventurers exited the lair with her to find an army of Forest Spirits waiting for them.

The Forest spirit army eventually reached Baldur's Gate on the last hours of the fourth day, and fought against the undead menace. Even the spirit of Ghandiron were with them, but the Blight and Haram eventually nullified their threat. Amin fought on in her dire bear form as many times before, striking down the undead like an enraged beast. She was still alive as the undead faltered, and with the Blight's defeat, returned to the Reaching Woods to take up the position of the new Elder.

The Elder

The Elder was the last of the elders of the circle of druids that protected the Reaching Woods. He was the lone survivor of the Blight's initial entrance into the Reaching Woods, and he worked on a sacred ritual stone just outside of the forest that be believed could be used to awaken spirits to the cause of the Reaching Woods and his circle. He was assassinated by Belladonna, Kagger Redyard, Daggo and Griselda, and the Angel of Decay
Rakdor arrived shortly thereafter to congratulate them and defile the sacred ritual stone itself before their eyes. An adventuring party led by Terri Lalani would later find Amin, whom would take them back to the Elder where they all discovered his death.

Cedric Lionmane and the Army of the New Dawn

After the defeat at the Battle of the Flaming Trees, and the subsequent slaughter at the Battle of Scornubel, Cedric withdrew to Scornubel with the tattered remains of the Army of the New Dawn. He began drinking, and was only pulled out of his own wreckage when he was needed at the streets to direct a large group of refugees leaving Scornubel for Elturel.

The Lathanderites of the Song of the Morning evetually got him on his feet, and he rallied the Army of the New Dawn and reorganized it and resupplied it with new equipment and a few recruits. He led them into battle at the Siege of Scornubel, after using his divination expertise to find out exactly how big the besieging army was. He lost half of his forces, dead or too injured to continue, and sent the Song of the Morning adventurers with a false letter (The Song of the Morning knew it was false) that would throw enemies off his trail if they were captured as they went to inform the War Council. Then the Army of the New Dawn moved towards Elturel to join up with the forces there.

Cedric incoprorated the crusaders of the watch and after some negotation many of the hellriders as well into the army. Without any word from the War Council or the dukes, he acted independently and moved towards the Chionthar Bridge and reached Baldur's Gate just after the siege began. The army fought hard and flanked the undead forces, which halted their advance into the Palace District. He was eventually pushed back inside Baldur's Gate, where they joined the defenders in the Dock's District and later withdrew to the East District where the artillery was stationed. The army of the New Dawn's experienced clerics and paladins, all experts at turning undead, not to say Cedric Lionmane himself, proved crucial to the efforts of banishing the Blight after he was stunned. They stayed to cleanse the city of the undead, and after a courteous ceremony with the Dukes and those gathered, returned to their respective home regions.

The order of Rot
Hidden: show
Image
Hidden: show
The order of Rot was a Waterdeep organization specializing in poison and disease, and often mutilated themselves with these things by ingestion, inhalation or injection so as to test and experience their merchandise. Rakhar and Haram was originally from the order, but after the latter's ascension as an Angel of Decay the order intended to return to Waterdeep for their peaceful endeavours when Griselda and her Gargauth allies pressed them into service. In an underground ruin in the Fields of the Dead, the order worked on perfecting a disease known as "Life", a disease that spread through water, uncurable by magical means and extremely lethal to all forms of life. For several months, the order worked for this purpose, and were finally finished. They had distilled and concentrated a great lab full of ingredients into a single vial, "Life", as they called it, and they were done.

They had begun packing their equipment to move back to Waterdeep, when Belladonna, Taran Seven, Rags and a large amount of other adventurers found the lab by a tip from Griselda. The order thought they were Gargauthians and indicated as much, but the adventurers wouldn't listen. They believed that they were harboring Magmire within the facility, and never quite got what a misunderstanding the whole situation was. Despite being a generally well meaning group, they proved quite blood-thirsty, and ignored everything the defenceless Order was trying to say. This was fuelled by seeing two piles of corpses, victims of Griselda's allies, and undead guarding the order members, a precaution by Insen to keep them working. A battle broke out that saw most of the adventurers and the the entire order slain.

Afterwards, the adventurers explored the rest of the facility and found that it was indeed a big alchemy lab. Some individuals, notably Belladonna herself, grabbed whatever vials and papers they could for personal use, and noone thought to stop them or think of the consequences. These adventurers knew that the "Seven" had left with an incredibly powerful toxin since they found a note stating as much, and erronously believed that whatever left-over vials the Order hadn't yet shipped away, was that potion. Lies followed upon lies, and paranoia and panic ensued as these adventurers advertised the selling of these useless vials, knowingly, as the powerful thing they had read about. This was taken up the Khazark himself, and many other interests, none fully knowing that the lies forwarded by, and believed by others, only served to help the seven evade any fruitful search for them.

The lab was burned down to the ground as well before the adventurers left, so no traces of the truth would remain or indeed, explored. The Seven had completely evaded any would be pursuers, and Baldur's Gate was seriously at risk now...

The Seven, the toxin "Life" and the Stone of Insatiable Hunger

The seven is short for the Seven Talons, a Talonite assassin sect focused on poison as their weapon of choice. They're as such a stealthy gathering that likes to avoid direct confrontation, or if not possible, prefer to attack from a distance.

Following Insen's transformation into an Angel of Decay, Gran from Athkatla joins the group making them a total of six again; Gran, Isan, Ingjaard, Mansin, Oganak and Aleria. The 7th being the mere name of Talona. After having spied on Griselda for Magmire, as well as following various adventurers scouting out the high moors, the group sets out to gangpress another Talonite organization, the Order of Rot, into service. The seven had recieved some interesting ingredients from Shaandar while she was alive, and needed the Order's expertise to create a wide-spreading disease that could help them achieve the Blight's goals that much quicker, and so release people from their fears and pain according to themselves. They succeeded with this, and left the Order with the toxin "Life", heading towards Baldur's Gate using the sewer entrances to avoid any search or risks.

They assassined two farmers that happened to be wandering by, and dumped their bodies in the ocean. Sadly, these corpses was as if by a fluke discovered by the Wanderess as they made a regular supply run. The Wanderess crew brought the corpses into the harbour, while making sure it wouldn't leave the ship. However, information on the corpses did leave the ship and eventually reached some individuals whom made connections with three other corpses killed in a similar fashion and stowed away in the sewers.

They began investigating and found an old man there lost, looking for the city's main water cistern underground. The water nexus, as it were. He was killed by the thieves. His identity was Arak Gunderson, and was the head alchemist of the Order of Rot's lab. The Seven had brought him with them to administer "Life". His death alerted the assassins, but they decided to move on into the deep sewers buried deep under the current sewers. Caution go the better of them and they decided that if they were dealing with pursuers they would split up to achieve both of their objectives at once. Isan, Gran and Aleria went onwards to the nexus, where they successfully planted "life". They were interrupted by two individuals, and a struggle broke out. In the ensuing fight, Bran, Aleria and one of the individuals were downed, leaving only Isan to duel the crippled and near death assaillant. Unfortunately, she failed and shaking back life into his companion, the two individuals managed to release the valves under the nexus, emptying the city's water supply into the ocean. "Life" was neutralized, at a minor cost, and so the city was saved from a threat it did not know existed.

The individuals then set out for the remaining 3 cultists.
Griselda

After having aquired the last lump of the Stone of Insatiable Hunger, Griselda hid it away for fear that the Blight might pinpoint its location. She knew since serving under Magmire that this was what the undead were after, in part, but couldn't foresee why they would attack Baldur's Gate.

With the Stone, she began experimenting with its use not only on undead, but also on her fiendish allies. To do this, she used the knowledge of the Order of Rot fairly often, exchanging information, ingredients, vials and even some personel. The objective was to spawn something new from her allies, and eventually build an army. The dealings with the order proved to be a source of frustration though, due to delays, demands for payment and the refusal to do certain tasks.

She worked tirelessly to take over from Magmire with the help of adventurers unaware of her plans, and managed to find information on Magmire's location and route. She staged an ambush together with Kagger Redyard, Belladonna, Daggo, Arthur and Dravan Tramith, that failed utterly as Magmire crushed them but did not end them. Instead, she knew what Griselda was capable of and intended to bring her former minion back under her control. She cursed them, in such a way that all six of them would need to drink a potion she had concocted each week, or die. In such a way, she forced them to do her bidding, which wasn't that difficult. In most of the missions she sent them on, only Griselda seemed to be disagreeing with the actions, which included attacking Amin and slaying the Elder. These individuals had begun a process of retaking the Reaching Woods, which was opposite to Magmire's plans.

A cure was eventually found by Griselda, using one of the unholy Talonite texts and the site of a slaughter of elves in the Reaching Woods that the groups fighting the undead there generally ignored or were unaware of. Seeing a chance to cover her tracks, she gave the formerly cursed members a tip of what to do next. They wanted Magmire's location for revenge, and Griselda ignored to answer if that was it, which led the adventurers to slaughter the relatively innocent Order for her. In that way she got her revenge on the order and covered her tracks. Fearing that the Blight would locate the stone, she then fled east with the stone, awaiting such a time as when the Blight would no longer be present for her plans to take form. In the meantime her ally Lord Arkzhol would have to keep track of their progress...
The Prophecy and the Blight

The prophecy was never fulfilled, but neither did it prove wrong. It spoke of a time when the Blight would drown the lands in eternal pestilence, but also of how it might be destroyed. Neither occured, as the Blight was banished, and is likely to return within the next 200+ years. Throughout the entire year, the prophecy served as the main purpose and rallying cry for the Talonite cultists people encountered.

Brann had been hounded by the Hunters of Vengeance for a long time, but had when encountering them either swathed them aside or evaded them. His purpose had been the aquisition of the Stone of Insatiable Hunger, and believing it safe within Shaandar's hands, he moved onto the Amulet of the once Unburied. Travelling over the high moors searching for lost texts or any clue to its origin, he destroyed a naga expedition in search for the answers that could possible lie within the ruin they explored. It was then that he heard from Magmire on it's location, and left. The hunters, together with the elves on EDE, would find this ruin and the cultists he left behind, and the race was on to Harrad's rest, a ruin within the Marsh of Chelimber.

The adventurers were barely behind him, and following his tracks eventually encountered him near the Amulet's location, in the hands of a giant skeleton on the ground. A battle ensued between Brann's undead, his cultists and the adventurers, and Brann unable to use his wings effectively, was destroyed. The adventurers torched the place as they left, with the amulet in the hands of Ithilwen, an elf of EDE.

The amulet would remain in the hands of Ithilwen, and a summoning of Lord Arkzhol later gave more insight into the artifact while also tying the artifact's destiny to Lord Arkzhol and his nefarious use of it. They found that it was an incredibly powerful tool against the undead, at an incredible self-destructive cost, and while contemplating its use they stayed their hand. The amulet is still in hands of Ithilwen, blood-bound to never being able to leave her or Kor'vain, another elf, less it is forwarded to Lord Arkzhol.

Lord Arkzhol

Lord Arkzhol is a powerful Pit Fiend Lord, and was the main supporter and ally of Griselda, the chosen of Gargauth. Together they formulated a plan for usurping Magmire of her position, which failed and caused Griselda to openly betray her former mistress. Following this, they would speak often on how to best progress their plans, which was directed towards aquiring all of the unholy Talonite artifacts.

When the Dreadlord Selengil Harkonis called for a summon to function as another layer of defence to the Zhentarim outpost in the Reaching Woods, Lord Arkzhol was quick to answer and do his bidding, for a chance to work his plans through the Zhentarim. He was next to be summoned by Magmire as she invaded the outpost and crushed its defences. It was through this summoning that Magmire learnt of the location of the Amulet of the once Unburied, as she compelled the Lord to abide by a contract they signed. Magmire then sent the information to Brann, who immedietely set off to aquire the amulet.

The third time Lord Arkzhol was summoned was by the Dharashan mage Kor'vain, in a secluded forest glade in the Misty Forest surrounded by En Dharasha Everae allies. These elves had the Amulet of the Once Unburied with them. The group negotiated a deal with the Pit Fiend Lord, where they would get any 9 questions answered, one for each of the hells, in return for a blood pact in which Ithilwen and Kor'vain would hold onto the amulet, but could not for any reason deliver it to anyone else but Lord Arkzhol himself. The deal was sealed in blood, and the elves got the answers to their questions, which related to the amulet's origin, how many times Lord Arkzhol had been summoned to the Sword Coast, how the artifact is activated, what its function is, how it can reach its full potential, why the undead sought for it, how it could be destroyed, why Lord Arkzhol wanted the amulet and finally what the drawbacks of the amulet is to its user.

With the amulet still being in the possession of the two elves, Lord Arkzhol patiently just waits for a time when it will inevitably be his.

The Stone of insatiable hunger

During the Baldur's Gate plague, several differently plagued rats and some sewer dwellers had shown up, blood-crazed and in many cases, hollowed out. It was as if some other disease had struck them that ate at them from within. Many adventurers searched and were assaulted when visiting the sewers, but the source was unknown. One found that upon death, white hollow maggots appeared from within the corpses, only to vanish in plain sight. The source was the Stone of Insatiable Hunger, a foul corrupt artifact that seeped into the water and the very earth where it stood, affecting the local wildlife. In a series of twists and turns, the stone was smuggled out by Shaandar and Brann, while being pursued by The Hunters of Vengeance, the Dead Crows, Griselda and several others. It was divided up into 5 parts, one lump and 4 shards, each making one Angel of Decay out of Brann, Insen, Haram and Rakdor. Griselda, with the help of many clumsy adventurers, later captured the lump for herself.

This leads us to the Seven and the story of the toxin "Life". Mansin of the Seven had a second objective. Shaandar whom had previously secured the stone of insatiable hunger together with Brann, felt that perhaps there was more to be mined from the site. It was possible, she argued, that they had only aquired a piece of the entire stone.

This was the reason the seven split up in the deep sewers, as Mansin had aquired an artifact that he believed could help move a bigger stone, if there was one to be had. As Ingjaard, Mansin and Oganak found the Stone of Insatiable Hunger, it was clear that "stone" was a bit of a misnomer. It was closer to a mountain, and embedded within the earth and rock so it was likely impossible to separate it. The artifact as such, was of no use. This frustrated the trio, but not as much as having visitors arrive at that moment.

The stone seemed to be what the Blight and the Talonite Army was after, as if they could spawn 4 angels of decay and bolster their army with a piece the size of a haybale, imagine what they could do with a mountain. The visitors informed them of the Blight's banishment and told them that they should not move the stone. Of course, the cultists couldn't, but the implications of the demand needed to be stated and Mansin did thusly. If the stone remained, The Blight would return to this place in 200+ years, and spread desolation and ruin upon the lands once more. But as their was no choice on the matter, the visitors began talking on why the cultists were doing this, and a "philosophical" debate began. Eventually though, all sides being gentlemen, settled their arguments with violence that crippled the visitors and eliminated the last and twice outnumbered assassins.

One could only wonder if the stone was the root cause of the many strange occurances, the many mishappenings in the lands surrounding Baldur's Gate the recent years? It was a secret that was going to be kept, for if its location was ever revealed...
