General Alms and Charity in Baldur's Gate (Player/DM IC RP)

Unread post by kleomenes »

As the city recovers from the undead siege, public minded citizens set about charitable work to alleviate poverty and suffering in the city, both by direct charity and by other schemes to boost the lost of those hard hit by post-war economic woes.

Charity Gala

A charity gala is held shortly after the war, to marshall the wealthy of the city to support the city's recovery.
Nomster wrote:The Fundraising Gala is rumoured to have been a success, with 250 000 gold raised towards the restoration efforts of Baldur's Gate. It was a merry event where nobles, important merchants and foreign dignitaries mingled together with those who had fought in or otherwise made a difference in the war against the undead.

Food, Coin and Care for the Homeless

The rise of a homelessness problem in the city following the war, including the realisation that many homeless have moved back down into the sewers, prompts a reaction from charitable souls, who offer care, coin and food to those in need.

Well meaning souls look to the spirits of war refugees.
ShineDown wrote:A priest, once well seen within the city known as Brother Gastian, squire of the Radiant Heart has returned from the north.

His hand runs through his short cropped hair as he tends and gathers the youth of the homeless camps. Encouraging words are given and the priest, in his plain brown robes, with hands flinging aside, clears the streets of travellers.

To one group of youths he speaks and following, they pull over their heads the shirts they wear and setting them in a pile. The other group mills about before he brings both together, speaking shortly about rules and penalties.

Producing a ball of leather he looks back and forth, barking orders for players into their respective places. His head swivels to and fro, examining each team before raising his hand with the ball high. Eyes are glued before suddenly it drops from his grasp into that of a shirted, dirt faced boy.

Back and forth goes the game, ball hurled around the streets, bodies smashing together. Bruised ribs and bruised egos are todays menu as the priest keeps the game going for as long as he can.

The Skins are up 2-1 after an entire candle is done burning, the priest himself taking off his shirt and running along with the youths. Words of encouragement he yells to The Shirts and soon enough the game is tied.

Pushing adults out of the way, Gastian works hard as referee, encouraging then penalizing the teams tactics as the game draws ever closer to the end. The heavy leather ball is thrown back and forth many times until at last a hand is thrown up.

On one side come cheers and jubilation, the other, brooding and words of revenge. To the latter Gastian sets his hand on the youths shoulder, speaking "Losing a game is nothing. I have seen far worse in a battle of few men. And they never stood to congratulate their opponents."
Priests of goodly gods each discharge efforts to alleviate suffering and hunger.
Peccator wrote:Emerging from Pathfinder Hall in something of an unusually bothered state, a dark-haired Dawnpriest slides her twitchy hands into her pockets and moves away from the building. She pauses in the center of the square, her slightly wearied face tilting upwards into the brightness of midday to breathe in deeply. There was other duty to see to; she had her orders.

She moves to the nearest merchant stall boasting foodstuffs and buys up as many loaves of bread and apples as she can fit into a gunny sack, the gold coming from her own compassionate pockets. Despite her small frame, she hefts the sack with ease and follows her instructions into the sewers of Baldur's Gate to disperse the food among the homeless there; speaking words of Hope and Light to any who might listen and tending to the injuries and illnesses of the undercity community. The gentle pursuit of ministry seems to do much to soothe the worries that the day has wrought and she emerges again after some time with a good deal of calm restored.
Darradarljod wrote:A tonsured young human dressed in filthy brown woolen robes may have been recognised among the homeless by the Lathandrite priestess. He wears a red cord around his neck from which a holy symbol of Ilmater dangles.

The people here know him as Brother Sigma. He abides among the displaced sewer communities day and night, sleeping among them and breaking bread with them in fellowship. Sometimes, he teaches - occasionally he preaches - but primarily the wisdom of Ilmater is delivered in personal communion as encouragement, advice or rebuke as required.

He often wanders the tunnels seeking those who are isolated and shepherding them to gather and commune with the larger groups - this for their own security, for the tunnels are frequented by thieves and cut-throats, but also for more effective ministry toward them by those few concerned for their well-being.

This young Ilmateri seems primarily busied with the treatment of their health. He keeps persons quarantined as is needful and is diligent to restrict the spread of disease which is rife in these terrible environs. Most of his medicinal supplies thus far go toward the treatment of sores and infections - he surfaces only to replenish his supply, and this by the Temple of Ilmater in Baldur's Gate.
PiaMango wrote:An unfamiliar priest has begun entering the sewers periodically. Identifying himself as Doctor Halsey Hayes he claims no affiliation to any the relief efforts within the city, if pressed he would speak of association with the Church of Oghma.

His actions do not seem to come from good will. He only holds interest within the children and families that name the sewers home, ignoring all adults but those in dire need. His bribes of medical care, coin, or food comes at a cost, before anything is handed over the children are required to go through a thorough examination. Their names, gender, ages, heights (measured with a tape), dental health, number of living parents or caregiver, siblings are recorded in a notebook, as with the ability and time (measured by a small hour glass) to answer a series of cognitive questions, and short physical tests. His survey may lead many to be suspicious of him, if asked of the purpose the doctor would explain it is in his interest to monitor the well-being of the youth in the sewer.

As a side note he offers a small bounty on any rats captured for him.
A charitable society collected coin to distribute to the homeless.

The Ilmatari supplement the food supplies of the city by making offerings in order to Create Food and Water. While this "faith food" is no cheaper than purchasing food at the inflated prices locally, it is additional food that does not require import and does not drive up food prices locally. The food is delivered to the homeless who can be reached in or under the city, as best the Ilmatari are able.
kleomenes wrote:The Ilmateri have begun distributing more food than normal, offering dozens more meals a day either through the kitchen of the main temple, or to the most needy of the East Gate afflicted by post war distress.

In particular, Brother Sigma is supplied with meals and healing supplies to take into the depths for the homeless populations there.

When questioned, the priests who distribute the food in temple or outside of it will speak of it being the gift of Ilmater, pure with his compassion, born of the faith and prayer of the Adorned.

Peccator wrote:During her time in the sewers, Alesea would have noticed Brother Sigma and approached the Ilmateri. She inquires about supplying a steadier stream of food and healing supplies through him to the ones he's chosen to live among on behalf of the Church of Lathander.
Darradarljod wrote:
Alesea's inquiry was met with a fond brotherly gaze by the young man who's pale face was smudged with shades of sewer-grime,
"Dear lady, there is one who provides - and no far seeing telescope can visualize the coastline of his shoreless abundance. We have food you do not know about.
But may your compassion be rewarded, for truly, no good nor any evil has ever gone unnoticed - upon the earth or beneath it, even in tunnels and times as dark as these."
Peccator wrote: The Dawnbringer smiles warmly when he relays this information, gladness etching through the lingering weariness of her countenance. "Thank you for your kind words, Brother. The Light shines in the Darkness; the Darkness cannot overcome it. It's good beyond measure to know that needs are being seen to here - that the Light of kindness and aid is brought among these people." She lowers her voice slightly. "Is the one who provides an anonymous benefactor?"
Darradarljod wrote: Sigma himself seems well pleased for the company of the Dawnbringer and much joy has he on account of the noble heart of the maiden and her good charity. He takes to himself a bowl of water and purifies it by prayer. Rinsing his hands for the distribution of the bread, he answers; "Good Sister, this bread is surely the gift of Ilmater. Pure with his compassion, born of the faith and prayer of the Adorned.

Yet those who eat of this bread will hunger again, dear lady. Therefore our service endures even as The Lord on the Rack has endured all things for our sake.

I ... cannot compel you to further service than you have rendered already - but I am grateful for what you have done, and for your regard of the destitution of these poor. I only pray that the Light you speak of abide with us and keep us from evil even after you yourself depart."

Soup Kitchen

The Everwatch Knights and the Temple of Ilmater once more collaborate to open up a semi-permanent soup kitchen in the Harbour District to reach the needy and homeless there, beyond the reach of most charitable organisations of the city.

The temple of Ilmater charters a vessel, the Whistling Wanderess, to purchase food supplies cheaply in Calimsham.
Hoihe wrote:After a short trip away from the ship to handle some things, Hoihe climbs up the sterncastle of the ship to declare some news.

"Some news lads! We're not going to Calimport, 'tis a silly place. We're going to Memnon instead, not too much better but... Not so silly! Also because there's more wheat there." grinning some "Aye, lads, we're going to be the Gate's nourishment with this trip! The Temple of Ilmater's giving us plenty of money to pack the ship as full as we can with wheat!"

Looking to the pier, considering something "Oi, and we're taking her out to port in the morning tide so we can set sail easily. Any embarkments and disembarkments afterwards will need to be done with boat!"

A local priest obtains a warehouse to house the produce ordered from Calimsham.
kleomenes wrote:A local Ilmatari priest, Ameris, can be seen in the harbour district, speaking with various stevedores, teamsters and other warehouse workers with regards to an incoming shipment. He appears to be attempting to hire warehouse space urgently. This is successful, although it appears the priest has entered a commercial arrangement, rather than received charity.
The Whistling Wanderess docks, cargo hold full.
Hoihe wrote:The graceful triple-masted caravella redonda, the Whistling Wanderess was sighted after nearly a month's absence in the harbour of Baldur's Gate once more. Although the ship remains in harbour for now, a large amount of her crew was seen disembarking using rowboats.
Volunteers undertake a haphazard unloading of the goods, supplemented by more professional aid from the Darius Holding Company.
kleomenes wrote:A group of individuals is seen gathering near the berth of the Whistling Wanderess in order to unload a large number of sacks of grain. They are of diverse callings, a collection of local knights, adventurers, holy men and women, businessmen and women and rangers. Under the supervision of Captain Hoihe the sacks are placed dockside, and then by muscle power and hand carts moved into a warehouse in the docks district. The workers are clearly not professional, although their hearts are on the right place.

Later, heavier unloading of large crates is done by better trained workers in the pay of the Darius Holding Company, these being taken to the same location.
The Sword Coast Commercial Exchange offer their aid in the form of warehouse space, allowing half of the supplies to be moved there, freeing the other half of the warehouse to hold the soup kitchen itself.
kleomenes wrote:Hand carts are seen trundling through the streets as sacks of grain are moved from a warehouse in the Docks District to the Sword Coast Commercial Exchange building. The Ilmatari, the Everwatch, members of the Order of Lions, faithful of Tyr and even charitable passers by helped move the sacks, as did the Commercial exchange personnel themselves. It is rumoured three finely dressed ladies oversaw the deposit of the grain within storage attached to the Commercial Exchange building itself, including Director Endelyon and Lady Cheryl Cadwaldr herself. Said storage is being provided for free to the soup kitchen project by the Commercial Exchange, freeing up room to use part of the warehouse as the soup kitchen.
Preparations continue for the planning of the soup kitchen, with the Sword Coast Commercial Exchange planning to identify and recruit suitable workers to employ.

Efforts of the Sword Coast Commercial Exchange to hire local residents was Spearheaded by Acting Director Endelyon Castillo that eve, fueled as a two-part effort by the Temple of Ilmater (working in concert with the Commercial Exchange) as a way to provide both jobs and food to the people who need it. Music and ambiance was provided by the co-founder of Bluesummer Academy Rose Valexe throughout the entire eve, and it was said that many a noble, in heart or in title, donated money during the effort. A prominent doner was said to be a merchant named Nihm, who donated her own lion's share to the effort as well as bringing the total collected to over one hundred thousand lion's worth.

Word on the street is that those who are interested in applying in man the soup kitchens can contact any member of the Commercial Exchange, but especially the Assistant to the Acting Director Alessia De'Lille. Will the business receive applicants? Would it become self-sufficient? Only time can tell.

Oddly, while Ameris Santraeger and his wife were present at the start of the event, and at the end, they were absent for a large chunk of time in a middle. They were seen slipping into an alley along with a paladin of Tyr, Loghain, and a hooded gentleman in red and white attire.

Several men and women milled around an unprepared kitchen (a warehouse really), uncertainty in their expressions and only a single lantern to see with. A cat dozed lazily upon one of the crates, tolerating the presence of the Baldurians in her domain. Each bore the signs of hard street living, matted hairs and gutter-stained clothes abound. Yet misery did not bind them to that warehouse late last night. For you see, dear reader, what the flickering flame revealed that night were not lost souls seeking shelter from the rain. If one were to view the glow the light revealed in their eyes, one would observe the common bond: Hope.

The gods, in their ever subtle witticism, sent their champion in the form of a fat, balding mustachio'd man with a thick Sembian accent. Alfonso Mervaldo. He through open the warehouse doors with passion scrunching up his expression, flanked by his quartet of angels (his employers) Endelyon Castillo, Alessia De'Lille, Teharissa Vennelis, and the Lady Cheryl Mae Castillo-Cadwaldr.

The artiste set to work immediately. Shouting at the poor Baldurians into action, one did not get the sense that there was emnity in his words. Fire and inferno yes, but hatred? There was no room for such in Alfonso's world. He quickly found Marco the most promising of the men behind the counters, and entrusted him as his sous chef. His energy was contagious, and even the lazy cat couldn't help but join Alfonso in the kitchen, much to the jovial, passionate man's chagrin.

Endelyon Castillo, the woman directing subtly behind the scenes, organized the workflow and movement of supplies so that Alfonso could focus solely on his work. Without her, there would not have been food to cook at all. How she convinced the local dock rats to deliver supplies without running off with them, some say, was a testament to her powers of persuasion. She then taught the cooks how to serve their food.

Alessia too, did not idle lazily in the frantic air of activity. She established a quick rapport with those that would eventually compose the wait staff--Bishop was named manager, Margot to the counter, Eunice to do the dishes, and et cetera. Her own teaching style reflected well upon the dignity of the staff, and it wouldn't surprise this writer at all if the soup kitchen workers became reknowned for their kindness and professionalism.

Once everyone grew accustomed to their roles, it was up to Lady Cadwaldr and Vennelis to judge the fruits of the kitchen's efforts. Some might have said that the food had brought them back to the old countryside home of their youth, when their mother had made them soup to turn a foul mood. Whether or not the endeavor lasts, it is at least clear to this writer, dear reader, that the potential of the Baldurian Soup Kitchen leaves one looking forward to the bright days ahead.

Rumour has it that distributions to the homeless and needy in the East Gate and the sewers are continuing, and that the Ilmatari have hired six lay workers to aid with food distribution. The workers were identified by the Sword Coast Commercial Exchange and drawn from among those of the poor who came forward to work at the Soup Kitchen but were surplus to requirements. The aim seemingly to allow the clergy to concentrate on healing, and indeed aid from those with kind hearts willing to aid with distribution, or healing, is readily accepted.

Again the same explanation is given out, that the food is a gift of Ilmater, born of the faith and prayer of the Adorned. Although it is made clear that there is expense to such faith food, met by charitable donations from among the adventurers of the city and other merciful souls. Indeed, the need for more donations would be emphasised.

Radiant Heart March

Image

Early morning on Eleasis 21 a rhythmic march echos through the east district of Baldur's Gate followed by a lone horn. The sound overpowers the bustle of the city and those who move to investigate are first greeted by four banners flying high. The first carries the symbol of Torm along with the symbol of the Radiant Heart, The next three are a mixture of elaborate colors and designs each reading a different paladin oath. Act with Honor, Help Those in need, Punish those who harm or threaten innocents.

The banners appear to be carried by four banner men split between roughly forty marching knights. The first twenty are dressed in white and silver armor carrying the crest of the Radiant Heart, For those with the appropriate knowledge these are the men at arms and squires. Next are several pages dressed in brown priestly robes carrying no heraldry. Leaving the last to be Knights and Senior knights of the order. They are dressed in well kept armor with various arms and their own heraldry clearly displayed. All appear to be wearing a white cloak with the symbol of the Radiant Heart dead in the center. At the very back a large half orc known as the Radiant Hearts Master of the Order follows.

The knights march to the podium in the center of the east distract moving around in-front of it to stand at attention. As they do one of the Senior knights breaks rank and moves up onto the podium. This knight has deep red hair tired back in a ponytail, Emerald eyes that glow and soft pale skin. Her armor is well kept and holds a Silver shine with a red trim. a holy symbol of Sune hangs around her neck, and her shield depicts a red phoenix with a golden crown and an elven scimitar hocked over the right side. For those who asked around or already knew this was without a doubt Lady Erza Aldren of the Radiant Heart. She addressed the gathering crowed, Her voice commanding yet somewhat melodic.

"Greetings People of Baldur's Gate!, My name is Lady Erza Aldren of Sune and i am here to speak to you today on behalf of the Radiant Heart. I know this last year has been a trying one for Baldur's Gate and you its people. Some lives have been lost and buildings destroyed but we as a city must endure. It is important to remember that buildings can be repaired in time, And those who fell have found their way into the arms of their god or goddess. While they leave us now one day you will be reunited if you stay faithful in the blissful afterlife. You can live in fear of the dark gods and spend eternity suffering at their hands, Or dedicate your life to the good and spend eternity in bliss. Remember Ilmater carries your burdens, Tymora blesses you with luck, Tyr brings justice, Helm safe guards you, Torm gives you strength and Sune blesses you with love."

The Sunite makes a quick movement to produce several scrolls of paper that had been removed from town with the symbol of the black hand.

"The forces of evil have seen what the city recently suffered and now attempt to use it as a chance to strike. They believe you weak willed and attempt to use fear mongering to push their evil goals. But you are not weak! You need not give into fear or to bend to these cowards who hide in the shadows!. Stand in the light with us and our gods, Trust in the goodly gods and your common man and that faith will be rewarded!. We stand before you now as examples of the power conviction and faith can bring!. As knights ready and willing to protect you. You need not be a paragon to make the world a better place. A simple act of kindness or selfless gesture brings great good into this world and carries its own reward."

The Sunite throws her hands forward to signal the knights and a number of paladins and clergy step forward.

"My brothers and sisters here will be offering free healing and advice for all in need!. I know this is not much but it is a start, Some of you are currently without work. For those of you who are willing to fight for your common man and holy faith, You can join the ranks of our holy order. Stand beside us!, Protect your family, Your friends, Your people and your city! and we will see you provided for. You have the power to ensure the suffering of the last year befalls no other. Not everyone can become a paladin but everyone can do good. Our men at arms, squires, pages and clergy are no less important to our work. Join us and together we can help bring Justice, Hope and happiness to the people of Faerun."

The Knights gathered sound of in unison

"THE COURAGE OF ONE CAN CHANGE THE DESTINY OF MANY!"

With that the knight moves down from the podium and the gathering breaks rank to offer healing and advice to all seeking, Getting ready to move further into the city only after everyone in need has been seen.

Ariella wrote:Pretty much inspire people, Recruit a few npcs to replace the people we lost in the war and offer free healing. If we get any extra npc's over the four who died they can likely go to the order HQ in Athkatla.

Other then that its just to let PC's know we are still around and active.
*Many common folk and those of the merchant class cheer on the social proceedings, applauding for the members of the Order that they believe sacrificed much for the city in the siege. A couple of soldier age human residents of Baldur's Gate, after one of the speeches approach the Order about applying to serve in the order. They have no training, but their motivation and heart seem enthused at the prospect.*
