[Coming Soon] Scry Changes

Unread post by DaloLorn »

Soooo, I mistakenly posted this thinking it was about to go live.

When the next patch goes live (not tonight!), you'll notice a few changes to the Scry:
  • Level obfuscation is no longer a thing. Those of you who choose to show their levels will now show their exact levels.
  • That might be a scary change for some of you (newcomers and veterans alike), which is one reason why the Scry will now default to hiding your area and level the first time you log in after this update. (... It occurs to me that this default might not be applied if you're hiding your area, your level, or your player name. Tweak your settings accordingly!)

Lol. I first read the title as: [Coming Soon] Scary Changes.
Yeah, fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me….

It could be seen as one of those!

I think I'm going to like it. It's going to make it easier to judge whether there's anyone I can feasibly adventure with, assuming they don't all panic and hide their level... and assuming they realize they can show it.

Does ones Level determine if there is ability to RP and/or adventure with another? Maybe grind, yes, but not be IC and just react to the environment as one finds it.

I personally wish that it was “known” IC of places—like a certain tavern or a campfire—was a “staging” or hang out for PCs of similar or relative power.

The game totally goes lopsided when you have Level 1s trying to interact with Level 30s, and not just because of mechanics-dictating-role play.

Scene One:
Level 1 toon: “Hi. I’m a goblin killer extraordinaire!”
Level 30 toon: “Pff. Lick my boots, kid. I have cleaved a Balor in half more times than I care to remember. And do not even get me started on the Dracoliches….”
Yeah, fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me….

RP, no. Adventure... technically also no, but you'll rarely find someone who manages to make a dungeon run enticing when it becomes a spectator sport. By and large, the best times I have are when I'm adventuring with a group with a similar power level (which sometimes corresponds to actual level, though not as often as I'd like) to my own, and can RP as someone who's actually materially contributing to the adventure.

It's part of why I'm so sensitive to the server's questionable balancing: It blurs the already thin line between grinding and adventuring.
