NEXT UPDATE: Spellfocus Conjuration

Unread post by Nachti »

Updated spells:
Planar Spells now benefit from conjuration focus.
Summon I-IX now benefit from conjuration focus.
Swarm spells (conjure spiders, conjure metalman, etc) now benefit from conjuration focus.
Dead Walk now benefit from invocation focus.
Animate Dead and Army of the Dead now benefit from necromancy focus.
Create Undead and Create Greater Undead now benefits from necromancy focus.
Revenant Spell now benefits from conjuration focus.
Phantom Wolf and Bear now benefit from conjuration focus.
Airball now benefits from conjuration focus.
Summon Ibrandlin now benefits from conjuration focus.
Create Baneguard now benefits from necromancy focus.
All summoned creatures will have their HD reduced by 2.

In exchange they will now scale with spellfocus conjuration/necromancy or invocation focus.

Spellfocus: grants +1 HD.
Greater Spellfocus: grants +1 HD.
Epic Spellfocus: grants +2 HD.
Red Wizards who specialize in the proper spellschool get +1 HD.

So a character that used to summon a 16 HD creature with Greater Planar Binding will now summon a 14 HD creature. If he has Epic Spellfocus Conjuration he will summon a 18 HD creature.

Note: Summons are still subject for balancing and numbers might be tweaked.

Would this affect Gate and Epic Gate, or only the Planar Binding/Planar Ally spells?

What about Summon Monster I-IX?

Yes the change also affects gate and epic gate. Although epic gate (20 HD) benefits only from Epic focus (making it 22 HD) and Red Wizard spec (making it 23 HD).

Summon Creature line might follow in the future.

What about spells such as "the dead walk" and "summon baatezu" from warlock and hellfire-warlock respectfully?

"the dead walk" is probably related to necromancy and not conjuration. Not sure about baatezu.
That brings the question: Are there plans to make something similar with necromancy focus and "Raise Dead" line of summons/spells?

I suppose it would be. Altho' I'm not sure if Eldrich magic has classification under the normal spell schools... or if it's "its own thing". And, I forgot to add "Summon shadow demons" as well to that list.

Either way, could be interesting.

Ah yes, there's the "Conjure [creatures]" line of feats as well. Such as metalmen, spiders, shadow demons...

How does Creeping Doom benefit from conjuration focus?
Wirg to Pug: "Iz lat dun?"
Pugratix to a snarky militia man: "Mmmm. Not yet. I will live for hundreds of years and be heralded as one of the greatest forces of destruction on the face of the world. The only thing you can destroy is the outhouse."

I think by swarm Nachti means the spells that make more than one summon. The conjuration affects the summons HD.

Creeping doom is a damaging spell and not a summon per say. There is no HD to raise.

To be blunt, that sucks actually. Considering that the summons were at a level, which made them somewhat useful (aka not overpowered for sure). With this change they are most likely in the "do not use unless specialized"-category again...

Why not just keep them as they are and provide an additional bonus with the foci?

That's a good point here.
I tend to enjoy a planar calling with my cleric for a few difficult fights lately, but who has feats to spare for a spell which is very situational.

Playing with an arcane gish alt I can feel your pain even more. Clerics do have even less means to ward the summons.
