Intrigues of the Sword Coast (Player/DM IC RP)

Unread post by DM Dialectic »

Rumor spreads that the church of Tiamat has emerged from being a mere cult in the west since the Amn-Gate War period and Tiamat's resurrection thereabout in the Hall of Wonders incident in Baldur's Gate to being fully integrating with the church of the Nemesis of the Gods in the east. It is said that some ill-reputes recruited from the typical mercenary and adventurer market of Soubar helped to secure a portal opening to the east via Lyran's Hold in the Forest of Wyrms in the past ten day. It is also said that the portal then brought in a multitude of Church of Tiamat reinforcements from the east. It is also rumored that on a reported tip by enemies of Tiamat to the Lords' Alliance that the Hellriders of Elturel expeditiously rode into the Forest of Wyrms and raided Lyran's Hold to thwart the Tiamat devout, but found nothing but a closed portal and signs of many hastily moving humanoid and draconic footprints. The Hellriders are said to have then promptly destroyed the portal as those who would go to Lyran's Hold now will see the former portal there is broken and likely beyond repair. If the tip to the Hellriders had not gone through, however, it is likely that many more servants of the Nemesis from the east would have stepped through to reinforce the newly formed Church of Tiamat in the west.

In the meantime, it is also said that the Church has seemingly recruited its first new local devout servants in the west, some even willingly and without compulsion, though by what means they choose to serve the Nemesis of the Gods remains to be seen. It is also said that the Church recruits in a more secular fashion mercenaries and adventurers to aid with its security, diplomacy, devout numbers growth, general interests, and accumulation of magical items and items of draconic interest.

Not all news has been good for the new western church branch of Tiamat, however. It is also rumored that the Flaming Fist discovered the location of another portal to the east to be used by the church on an unnamed island in the Sea of Swords and requested an adventurer band via Captain Deudermont's Sea Sprite to aid Flaming Fist and Lords' Alliance naval forces in destroying and thwarting the attempt and the portal. In this case, the forces against Tiamat were victorious and the portal and all who entered from it were seemingly destroyed and smote upon the battlefield of the island. It is also said that perhaps these portal measures of the Church are out of desperation and failure rather than success, as they only seemed to come into fruition after those of Tiamat failed to obtain enough shards related to Tiamat for whatever ends they had aimed for in doing so.

Many hours following the treaty ratification between the Zhentarim and Baldur's Gate, a new song begins to sound in the taverns and inn's of the city. The lutist moved from establishment to establishment sharing the song with the patrons before mixing into the city crowds. The man was generally plain featured, dressed in blue and yellow. The music was jolly but the message dire.

Dirty Zhents

Their caravans are coming, packed up to the brim,
Banite flags are flying, they are looking for a win.
They are coming to the Gate to unload their vast supplies,
Should you look at them oddly you'll meet a quick demise!

Here comes the Dirty Zhents! They are coming down the road,
Coming to the Gate, to sell off their load.
Kiss goodbye your freedom! Best embrace the fear,
For the Zhents will have their agents always closely near.

Now they're in the city, the crowds begin to part.
The whispers start to circulate, the rumors begin to start.
Every murder, every theft the Zhents are sure to blame,
Nevermind the body there, the Zhents crossed off his name!

Here comes the Dirty Zhents! They are coming down the road,
Coming to the Gate, to sell off their load.
Kiss goodbye your freedom! Best embrace the fear,
For the Zhents will have their agents always closely near.

In due course, the plain featured lutist dressed in blue and yellow makes another appearance. This time it is just after dusk, travelling from establishment to establishment with a new song on his lips. The song is always followed by Look to Elturel in each performance. The first is performed very slowly, the melody quite melancholy and weepy. For the second the pace is quickened and the melody nearly warlike to match the tone of the song. There is a certain contrasting yet complimentary harmony between the two, similar to book ends of the same tale.

What Have You Done

What have you done Ambrose?
What have you done?
You’ve made deals with drow,
to Hill's Far they come.

What have you done Ambrose?
What have you done?
The Black Network's web
Could only catch one.

What have you done Israe?
What have you done?
Drow moved to Greenest,
The village overrun.

What have you done Israe?
What have you done?
Was it worth Ulgoths blood?
Ye spited Ambrose, you won.

Look to Elturel

Dark tendrils reach the Gate,
Look to Elturel.
They preach brutality and hate,
Look to Elturel.

The Watcher is alert,
Look to Elturel.
The war is not covert,
Look to Elturel.

They fight dirty Zhents,
Look to Elturel.
They do not relent,
Look to Elturel

Hellriders go to war,
Look to Elturel,
Their courage evermore,
Look to Elturel.

When the Thayan courier arrives to discretely deliver the letter, the Minstrel would decline politely if given the chance. Should or should not the courier remain, the Minstrel would sing in acappella the first verse he sang before. The emphesis this time on the last phrase, as if to give an obvious answer to the letter to any who were listening.
The wizards of Nay
In pink dresses they sway
Enter the enclave
you'll met your last day!

As word spreads of the Minstrel, A knight in ruby red is instructed to follow the minstrel from tavern to tavern. The knight makes no effort to contact the minstrel, Simply watching each performance, His instruction to simply follow and ensure that no one acts to silence the performer. If asked he explains he has been directed by Lady Aldren to ensure the bard is free to share their words of beauty with the people of the Gate.

In the past few months, more poetry and music has circulated through the streets of Baldur's Gate, though with this recent surge has come change. When before, a plain faced lutist travelled through the city singing, now the songs appear written down and passed around or left in nooks for people to stumble across. What has caused the change in behavior is not clear, though those with a keen ear for art and poetry and whom are familiar with the content may well recognize they come from the same artist. The latest, and newest of the works is entitled "One Fateful Night" though it is often circulated with the others.

One Fateful Night

One fateful night, within the White Mask,
Gifts they were given, plague rats were passed.
He sought there an actress, fairer than he.
Once they were friends, now enemies.

One fateful night, in Ilmater’s House,
No rest would be found, for this future spouse.
Selengil dared enter, death threats were then made.
The floor of the temple, is where the minstrel laid.

He fled through the door with necromancy done.
Forbidden spells, murder, yet consequences none.
For less then two years since banishment proclaimed,
Selengil reentered a place he left maimed.

For one fateful night, the trade treaty passed.
Selengil returned to the Gate at long last.
The banishment was lifted with the tip of a quill,
The now Dreadlord came forth, exerting his will.

Yet where is the justice for that fateful night.
Where is the apology for darkening the light?
Many months since the treaty yet is the treaty upheld?
Or yet another secret, forever withheld.
