The Fate of Triel, as told from the Zhentarim’s perspective:

On the morning of the attack, activity swirled around the Zhentarim’s heavily fortified encampment that blockaded the Northern Tradeway linking the townships of Soubar and Triel. Those who had seen the camp during last week’s battle, when the Zhents had successfully held the line against an attack from allied forces from the south, might be amazed at how much the fortification had been built up in such a small window of time. Supplies and additional troops from Darkhold continued to trickle in through the week following the battle, and once the last of them had arrived the Imperceptor, the Zhentarim’s field commander for this operation, called for their plan to immediately get underway. Zhent scouts had spotted another large warband of Balduran interlopers approaching Triel from the south, so they knew time was of the essence if they wanted everything to go according to plan.

On cue Anuldraxius, the Zhentarim’s relatively young (by dragon years) green dragon ally took to the skies with a Zhent Skymage along for the ride, as well as some additional cargo – a critical piece of the strategy that they had been mapping out and implementing for a considerable period of time now. As the dragon and his rider approached Triel from the Forest of Wyrms, the Imperceptor rallied the strike team who would be tasked with assaulting the town and putting an end to its occupation by eliminating the orc tribe’s chieftain once the dragon had delivered its “present”. The unexpected approach of another Balduran warband forced a quick change in strategy, as the Zhents did not want to be flanked and their only avenue of escape cut off while engaging the orcs in battle, and so it was decided that the strike team would go into Triel alone while the bulk of the sizeable garrison from Darkhold would defend the encampment and ensure the road north remained clear.

Before long, the wyrm had flown over Triel and observers could see several objects dropping from its harness – small stones magically enchanted with the Antipathy spell, a powerful magical compulsion that forces a designated group target (in this case, black orcs) to flee the area. As the rocks impacted the ground below, chaos erupted within the ranks of the orcs infesting Triel. Quite a few, mostly the great orc chieftain’s strongest and most loyal of warriors, were able to resist the magical compulsion, but a great many more immediately succumbed to its effects and began a mad dash out of town, scattering in every direction. A murderous roar echoed out from the war chief’s position in the upper palisade of the town, a rage born of witnessing his seasoned and battle-hardened warriors scattered through more Zhent trickery and magic.

As scouts confirmed orcs fleeing en masse from the town, the strike team immediately moved out from the encampment to the north and so began the real battle for Triel. Fighting was prolonged and exceptionally brutal in some parts, as the enraged orcs bolstered their forces around key chokepoints and attempted to overwhelm the strike team with wave attacks, more than once forcing the Zhents to fall back and regroup and pick apart the orcs piecemeal on their bloody trek towards Gajutar’s position. The fighting at the war chief’s hilltop encampment was the most violent and pitched battle of the long process, though thankfully there was still no sign anywhere of the Balduran interlopers sighted moving in from the south. As the battle to claim Gajutar’s head seemed to be taking a turn for the worse, the enraged dragon circling overhead moved to intervene as the Skymage riding atop him began to rain down Meteor Swarm spells as Anuldraxius swooped in to unleash a billowing cloud of noxious, acidic gas upon the orcs. Unfortunately for the Zhents, the orcs immediately turned towards the dragon which had been tormenting them for weeks now, and the moment it swooped low to unleash its breath weapon they responded with a volley of arrows and spears that struck true, forcing the dragon to land and join the battle directly. Before long the young green was slain, no match for the combined fury of Gajutar and his elite honor guard – though, ultimately, it softened them up enough for the Zhents to manage to finally bring down the massive orc and his remaining guards.

After the last of the orcs occupying Triel were wiped out, the Zhents retreated to their encampment with their prize – the corpse of the slain war chief, Gajutar. The head was then separated from its body and the now-headless corpse spirited off towards Soubar by a small band of the Zhentarim’s finest scouts. Their business concluded, the strike team was ordered to hold the pass from Triel leading to the encampment while the forces of Darkhold packed up and readied their caravans for the return trip north, not wanting to give the interlopers a chance to attack them when they were at their most vulnerable. The strike team obeyed and returned to the town, occupying the bridge that was the only way (from Triel, at any rate) to reach the winding dirt road leading to the encampment. Fortunately for the Zhents it took quite a long time before the Balduran allies managed to finally reach the town itself, and quite a long time after that before they figured out where the Zhent strike team could be found. As the southern allies approached, word reached the Zhents defending the bridge that preparations were almost complete for the departure for Darkhold.

An attempt at dialogue with the combined force from Balduran lands proved as fruitless as before, though they were able to stall things long enough for word to finally reach them from the Imperceptor that the convoy home had finished its preparations and was underway, and after some initial posturing violence erupted after the Zhents refused to surrender to arrest by the allies. Having been exhausted by the prolonged battle wiping out all of the orcs and their chieftain, the weary defenders were no match for the attacking Balduran alliance and forced to retreat, fleeing back to the safety of the large army from Darkhold marching off to the north. The allies, thankfully, seemed to realize that attacking such a force would only result in their massacre – again – and so did not pursue them once they were chased out of the town. Thus ended the battle for Triel.

Later that day, as the scouts delivered the headless corpse of Gajutar to the citizens of Soubar, announcing that the Zhentarim had purged the town of its orcs and liberated Triel, there was a near-riot in the small village as the townsfolk – many of whose sons, daughters, and friends had been massacred by the black orcs in Triel when they turned against their supposed allies – tore the corpse apart in a bloodthirsty frenzy, burning some parts and stabbing other parts with spears and other makeshift weapons until little remained. Days later still, when word reached Soubar that the Zhent strike team responsible for killing Gajutar and purging Triel of its orc occupants was attacked and driven out of the town by forces from Balduran lands to the south, there was another eruption of anger against the allies. An angry mob quickly formed and a minor visiting merchant from the Gate was lynched, the unfortunate victim of circumstance. He was hung from a tree in the center of town and repeatedly stabbed by spears amid chants from the mob in support of Darkhold while small children used him as target practice for throwing daggers and darts. The corpse remained in place for some time until an unknown party cut it down and threw it in a nearby river. For the time being, those visiting the small town of Soubar from southern lands are met with an extremely hostile populace, particularly those wearing visible indications of being associated with one of the Gate’s knightly or paladin orders.

I'd like to emphasize again that the above is written from the perspective of the Zhents, so there's some degree of "editorializing" taken with the language. If a write-up is created for the good guys' side of things for this event, expect the same type of perspective in its language ;)

Uriel stood on the hillside near the camp where the allied forces were gathered. He looked around at all those whom he had stood next to in battle. Voices rose from among the crowd. Bickering between factions was still to be heard. Even in face of a common enemy such differences could not be put aside to agree to work together for long. The time for action was drawing near now though and decisions must be made. Uriel drew everyone close and explained his initial plan on how to deal with the current issue once and for all.

The elves from the northern lands soon joined the allies once they were packing up their camp. Uriel was glad to see them join their ranks. Again, he explained the plan but suddenly keen ears heard movement in the distance and scouts came to report black orcs approaching their position. Shoulder to shoulder the allies stood, ready for the onslaught that was to come. Both arrow and magic reigned down upon the black orcs as they approached the wall. The battle was brief and soon over yet this marked a distinct change. Uriel shook his head as the allies regrouped, it seems things were in motion. The orcs were fleeing from Triel, their timing was too late even now.

Again they rallied around Uriel, Paladin's of the Radiant Heart, keepers of the land from the Elder's Circle, Knights of the Silver Rose and elves of En Dharasha. Uriel knew full well that plans must be fluid to be successful and knew it was time for change. After hearing wise council and suggestions from several of the factions on the newest developments Uriel knew full well in his heart there was only one course now for them if they were to fight together. Quickly putting aside the many objections and still bickering between the allies over plans and strategy, Uriel explained his hope to keep them united and push forward. Again would they approach Triel from the south. Together they were stronger, this Uriel knew this to be true and it made the decision all the easier. Perhaps it was not the best approach or the safest, yet it was the only path they could walk together.

Brave scouts went ahead of the main force, ensuring the way was clear and safe for travel. They met little resistance in their path this time, having traveled it previously and now approached the blockade. The allies rallied and again stood shoulder to shoulder, shields at the ready as the brave scouts went ahead to prepare the way. The fog was thick but explosions at the barricade soon signaled the approach of their enemies.

Steel met steel as the allies held their ground in the line, trusting in those behind them to aim true. Slowly the wall advanced onto the horde and soon the battle was ended, the road into Triel clear and covered in Orc blood.

The scene on the periphery of Triel was shocking, fires burned steadily polluting the air with their smoke, masking the devastation of the village. Much to the dismay of the anxious Paladin's, scouts were again sent out to survey the battlefield, for Uriel had grown overly cautious and calculating. Scouts returned quickly reporting oddly little presence of life. Dead bodies of orcs scattered everywhere and the dragon fallen. One orc was found holding onto life and was dragged out of his hiding place before the allies.

Uriel demanded answers on the events and the location of the chieftain but the orc gave little. When the monster would not cooperate, the elves thought to torture the beast to force it to talk. Uriel shook his head, refusing to torture the monster for information. The beast asked for death which Uriel granted quickly and mercifully as his greatsword swung for it's neck. It was then that keen ears heard the crying of children up above.

The allies marched onto the plateau before the Palisade to survey the battle between the dragon and the orcs. Just then small children appeared. Astonished how they survived this long, the allies drew round them. Others of the allies tended to the children offering comfort and warm smiles as Uriel searched for the corpse of the chieftain. Suddenly the children began running off to those whom they cried saviors, the assembled strike force of the Zhentarim.

The Paladins of the Radiant Heart soon stood opposite them, wishing conflict though Uriel knew this not a wise path given their assembled strength, their positioning and the views of some of the allies. Hostilities soon rose as disagreements between the two factions heightened. Uriel then stepped forward and attempted to diffuse the situation through honorable combat with the one who spoke for the Zhentarim. He dropped a gauntlet between them though the coward would have none of it. In the end violence soon erupted as tensions heightened resolving little as the forces soon drew apart to return home.

Gajutar Speakback, reknown Bloodhunter, chieftain of the Black Orc tribe...is dead.

The village of Triel, once common farming community with importance to harvest trade, lies in ruin...yet, with the Black Orc head severed from the body, the warring tribesmen are either dead or scattered to the four corners, and with spring on the horizon, even so soon after the recent events, the smallest of signs of plant life return to the fields.

As do the surviving villagers, even now, they return from the safety of their retreats, wondering why and how the events unfolded so that their sweet village on a hill is returned to them...

Falsities and truth concerning Triel intertwine like a rose amongst weeds. What is known is this:

When the fall of the Black Orcs under Gajutar ended, and the fires burned themselves out, what lay upon the fields were body after body of the Black Orc...and, to the astonishment of all that first returned to the village, the ripe-with-death carcass of a green dragon. The rumors had been true! The wisest of the returning villagers would instruct the farmer people to remove what scales they could muster from the carcass, to be sold upon the open market, providing funds for the village to enact repairs—it would be months before Triel returned to its idyllic part.

Rumor of two children having survived in the village during the Black Orc infestation, and during both battles to oust the Orcs...a miracle. A council of villagers has drafted a request to more official bodies in hope to find the children's whereabouts—it is said these two children are the only eye witnesses to who the true liberators of Triel are...and the village council is indebted to them, whomever they may be.

But many know what force lay behind the "liberation" of Triel—the mysterious and black power of the Zhentarim. These victors of the day not only faced the Black Orc horde—or what had been left of it after the Siege of Doron Amar—killing the great Chieftain Gajutar in the process, they also faced down an Alliance of the Righteous, whom although empowered and willing, themselves, to deal a fatal blow to the Black Orcs, did not manifest in time to save the village of Triel.

The forces of good and evil did meet face-to-face within Triel shortly after the fall of Gajutar, and many upon the side of the righteous urged for battle against the Zhentarim force...but the Zhentarim were strategically positioned upon the northern bridge in such a way that any that would charge them would be subjected to sword, claw and magic in overwhelming odds.

But the upper hand is never held for long.

The Zhentarim has made effort to now leave the area of Triel, marching their forces back north. The caravans are armored, but without the ally of the Green dragon as their disposal, their travel north is more easily subject to...

A shift in the power structure of the northern regions has occurred. To what effect the win against the Black Orc—and the continuing war to win minds and hearts of the people of the north—has amongst the towns, remains to be seen....

Upon hearing of the disappearance of the orphans, Herran, begins searching every known cave, farm, and hidey hole between where the farmer found the bed and Triel, singing as he goes.

He sings the songs he knows are most enjoyed by children and should he meet any children along the way .. whether they are the ones he looks for or not, he tells of his own experience as an orphan and speaks of the ones missing, offering to hide them in his theater should they wish food and a safe place to sleep.

He also offers to help them in any way he can.

Hoihe groans upon overhearing the disappearance and the orphans, and sighs as he thinks of Soubar. He then puts on a blonde wig, dyes his moustache blonde with quick-wash alchemical dye, dons a set of green-brown clothing and a straw hat, and at last covers some of his face in clay-based dye to make his usually fair skin look tanned. Then he goes to look around Soubar for children, trying to keep himself from talking in the meanwhile. He is otherwise adorned by a ring of performing, and the dyes are made by himself in Candlekeep's laboratories. The blonde wig he has bought from Zachary.

People with a sharp eye might notice black streaks in the blonde moustache, and fair white spots in the otherwise tanned skin. Another hint of suspicion is that he does his best to hide his eyes with the hat, though.. the hat seems to unnaturally help with hiding them. Those who know him and sport a sharp set of eyes may recognise the familiar body structure, facial structure and movements.

Ever since the realization that the children had gone missing, Thedran has spent every waking moment of his time along the northern roads and lands. Searching every bush. . rock, and traveler he comes across.

As the days have worn on, his temper has grown short. Anyone whom has seen him would quickly notice this is a man who has slept little in the last few days. His armor is dirty, and dust stained. . the stubble on his face which normally does not grow for more then two days is turning into a full blown beard, and his eyes are horribly blood shot as the search takes it's toll.
