You could go rogue instead of bard to get 2d6 sneak attack instead of inspire courage/competence while still opening up tumble and umd. Either way the build is fine if it fits your character concept.

Survival is used in tracking and is a key ranger skill so you should max it.

Re: A few beginner questions
Wolf for RP is fine... so is dog (same stats different model) but from what I have seen between dog and panther (and other big boy companions), dog/wolf is inferior.
They dont hit as hard, or as often, go down faster, and the ONLY non RP redeeming quality they have is trip.... which they barely ever use.
IF Dog/Wolf used trip, then awesome-sauce... otherwise, you pick them for RP...and RP alone.
Just FYI on that.
Plus, I am not 100% that rangers automatically get some of the feats listed on Nwn2db.... double check it on Jegs.
Obviously this thread went from "My Roleplay is weak... " to "How to build a ranger " LOL!

If the text is this color, I am on duty, everything else is just my humble opinion.

Haha, yes. Based on the comments so far I'm starting to think I should just build a character that is as powerful as possible.Hawke wrote:Obviously this thread went from "My Roleplay is weak... " to "How to build a ranger " LOL!
EDIT: I took bard because of the skills mainly, and I figured the bard song would be an added bonus. Now I'm starting to consider picking another class entirely though.

Re: A few beginner questions
I made a new build now. It's a monk / fighter and it can be found here. I'm really liking the idea of playing a monk, and I would just like to know if I missed something important? I borrowed most of the ideas from other builds.

Re: A few beginner questions
I am not a monk expert so I will leave Monk specific advice to others. All I will say is that you might want to consider making Strength 13. There is a certain ring that gives +2 Dex/Con and bonus feat: toughness so I can see having DEX/CON as even numbers if you will try to get that ring eventually. I still think investing in stealth is a good idea when you are taking a class that has it available. not strictly required, but it is certainly nice to have.
Overall the Monk 25/SD5 w/ HiPS and Epic Dodge is probably a bit safer, but no arguing this one is going to do some damage... I do have to ask (for the monk experts out there) is the Fighter levels gaining Greater Weapon Specialization and Epic Weapon Focus in fists better than going straight Monk and eventually doing 3d10 damage instead of 2d10?

Re: A few beginner questions
Monk 26 / Fighter 4 is stronger, mechanically. Monk 23 / Fighter 4 / FotF 3 is pretty amazing, mechanically. Especially if going Intuitive Attack route.

Re: A few beginner questions
Thanks again for the feedback. Maybe I should change the attributes a bit, then. I read in another build description that the biggest weakness of the intuitive attack monk is his AB, which is why I took 10 fighter levels. I think the suggested build was something like 20 monk / 7 SF / 3 Cleric, but I don't want to rp a cleric which is why I didn't want to use that build.
EDIT: Boy I really can't make a decision. I read some more about monastic orders and came to the conclusion that Divine Champion probably would make more sense from an rp perspective, so I changed the build again. It's more defensive but will probably have a lower damage output. There are two feats that I'm unsure of: Extra Stunning Attacks and Alertness. Any thoughts?
Could you clarify what you mean by mechanically?Steve wrote:Monk 26 / Fighter 4 is stronger, mechanically. Monk 23 / Fighter 4 / FotF 3 is pretty amazing, mechanically. Especially if going Intuitive Attack route.

Re: A few beginner questions
going downhill at this point... Divine Champion really wants at least a little charisma (your only dump stat). Monks are already multi-ability dependent so adding any class that needs some CHA is hurting. You were better off with fighter. The reason being you get more fist damage and spell resistance from the extra monk levels while still getting weapon focus/specialization from fighter levels.

Re: A few beginner questions
I'm getting all these ideas from this guide. I know very little about making a viable build in nwn2, especially on this server. That being said, the person who wrote that guide does seem quite knowledgeable and he did mention it as an option. I'm not saying that you're wrong, it's just that I'm getting a bit confused. Supposedly the main reasons for Divine Champion are Greater Wisdom as bonus feats (and the added benefits that go with it) combined with higher saves. He also mentions Fighter 4 / DC 6 as a viable middle ground option though. Any thoughts on the guide? Is it outdated?
EDIT: On a side note, how strict are the DM's on this server when it comes to monk multiclasses? I know that the druid/monk combo isn't allowed, but if I decided to go with my earlier build then could that become a problem later on? I mean based on the information I read about monastic orders, monks who are followers of Ilmater aren't allowed to multiclass into fighters.

Re: A few beginner questions
Here is a Monk 27 / FotF 3 build: http://nwn2db.com/build/?208719
Here is the Monk 24 / FotF 3 / Fighter 4: http://nwn2db.com/build/?133940
Compare them to your build, and decide on the numbers.
I'll just say this: decide what you want your Role-play to be, and try and build up a Plan from there. It often is much, much easier.

Re: A few beginner questions
You're probably right. I think I'll take the advice from the first page that Zanniej gave me and focus on just having fun with one of my own builds, even if they are gimped. That being said, I'm still curious about this:
As far as RPing a monk goes, am I expected to be a devout follower of my deity no matter what, or is it not as strict as for clerics? I noticed that there are even monastic orders that follow no deity. Is that allowed on this server?Teaboar wrote:EDIT: On a side note, how strict are the DM's on this server when it comes to monk multiclasses? Re: A few beginner questions
if they have not documented a specific no-no then they are not going to enforce it so long as it follows the rules that do exist.
I know we have plenty of Monk/Rogue/Assassins on the server as well as Monk/Shadowdancers and even a few Kaze style builds... I think you will be fine, whatever you decide
