How to get more involved

Unread post by mapa_falsh »

Well I have been around in game for a few years now, not that frequently, but now and then. Over a year I have been played one single character.

Well over that time, most of my game time I was running around, checking if there are anyone at campsite (that place where most people gather) and trying to pickup some kind of RP from there. I had few lucky occasion that I was stumbled upon DM event. I was so amazed.

Now I deleted my old character since he was from "old time" (becouse my pause in playing and story moved on) and created a new one.

My question is: how can I make my new character more involved in all this stuff that are happening in game. How can I make him something not just one occasional guy who speaks near fire? I know rat there are so much stuff I that are happening on forums, initiate quests, intrigues and things, but only I don't know how.

So if you can help me with some advices, and am sure those advices will help even new players also.

Thanks in advance

Another new player asked similar things a while back in this thread, in which a few of the DMs also chimed in some helpful advice. I'd start there and if you have more questions post them here!

Guilds are a good place to start. I know some will disagree but the most valuable thing a guild gives you is instant relations to a handful of people. You would immediately be with a crowd that would seek to include you. You can tag along to things they come up with, gossip about recent events and naturally, ask to be introduced to others.

I would advise you to define your character well. The link Tsidkenu posted has some good advise. If you just tag along to events and things with your character remarking "Oh I am just curious", "I have nothing better to do", "I have no clue what I am doing" then it will just make you feel that your character really does not add anything. Give your character purpose and other characters will be more inclined to be sympathetic and allow your character to fulfil his/hers purpose.

If you would like some introductions IG and IC, feel free to come by Pathfinder Hall. It would be known in Baldur's Gate that the place seeks to aid newcomers to the city. Do note that openly evil characters will be turned away.

To get more involved, it's easy.

Roll a PC people will like.

Roll with Team Good.

Be nice to DMs.

And you're on the right track! :D

Now, now....

As for the OP, I think you already, once before, were on the right track for getting "more involved." Though I myself fail to keep up these things that seem to work best on BGTSCC, I know there are tried and true and will get the job done:

1. Play one Character.
2. Play at regular, consistent hours. As much as possible.
3. Play often.

The above create a constant for your Character, so that the environment of the Server seems alive EXACTLY BECAUSE your Character is there, present and active.

Joining a Guild is a nice and easy way to get into a network. It isn't always easy to do so, but more often than not, worth the effort.

Most importantly: do not give up on your Character idea. There will be times when you think your Character matters little, has no effect, is practically invisible to the cliques, both IC and OOC. But a Character NEEDS to be meaningful to the Player, and the Player should play the Role fueled by this meaning.

As well...do not be shy in submitting your ideas as a Player, or your PC's goals in-character, to the Forums, to the DMs, to other Players. Once others realize that you are motivated and have interest in things, you'll see people gravitate to you! ;)
