All requests for admittance will now be processed by the Guide of Candlekeep.

A notice that explains the new policies is prominently displayed in the public foyer of the library.

Candlekeep Library Rules
Petitioners who seek library access must have a specific subject to research. Idle browsing of the library is not permitted.

Access is only granted for the duration of the approved research project. Once the project concludes, admittance must be obtained again in order to research a different topic.

Guests of the library will be escorted at all times by an Avowed of Candlekeep. All visits to the archives will be documented.

Guests of the library are not permitted to take notes or possess any writing implements while within the archives. All needed notations will be scribed by a member of Candlekeep.

Rude, disrespectful, or law-breaking behavior will result in the immediate and permanent revocation of access.
Library Admittance Methods
Method One: Submission of an Original Work

An 'original work' is a tome authored by either the person who seeks access to the library or a designated proxy. A submission must meet a minimum length requirement and adhere to the spelling and grammar guidelines of the language in which it is written. Any language is permissible as long as it can be verified and translated by an Avowed of Candlekeep.

Acceptable submissions include, but are not limited to: a detailed description of the events surrounding proposed research; historical accounts; interviews of notable figures. A visit with the Guide of Candlekeep is required before any submissions are accepted.

Up to a tenday may be required before library access is granted so that the submission can be read, verified, and properly catalogued.

OOC Notes:

use of the IG book system is strongly encouraged but not required
the minimum length requirement is around 750 words, which is approximately six full IG book pages or two Word Document pages
write in English only; denote any IG languages in [brackets] and provide translations if known

Method Two: Donation of a Rare Book

A 'rare book' is defined as one that is not already a part of the library. In certain situations, a better copy of book that is already in the archives may be accepted. A visit with the Guide of Candlekeep is required before any donations are accepted.

Up to a tenday may be required before library access is granted so that the submission can be read, verified, and properly catalogued.

OOC Notes:

only DM-granted books qualify
name of DM must be listed upon book

Method Three: Monetary Donation

The minimum donation amount is one-hundred bags. A visit with the Guide of Candlekeep is required before any donations are accepted.

Up to a tenday may be required before library access is granted so that the funds can be verified.
* These changes have been approved by the DMs.
** Access to the public scroll merchant is unchanged.
(( Polite nudge for players and PCs: these rules have been in effect for two years now and can be considered common knowledge. ))

Candlekeep saw a visit today of a well armoured Pryat of Helm leading an injured Chondathan heavy draft horse whose load she had lightened somewhat. After paying for stabling and treatment for the injured mare, the olive-complexioned raven-haired lady took a careful wander of the grounds, amazed at the structural beauty and defensibility of the location.

When she got to them, she spent a considerable amount of time at the shrines, asking a lot of questions about Milil, Deneir, Mystra and Oghma especially. She eventually departed the temple with a handful of new religious charms to add to her burgeoning collection, in addition to a potion of curing that it seems Oghma himself had miraculously granted the woman after she gave a considerable free-will offering to the Lord of all Knowledge. The smile on her face as she departed was one of simplistic, genuine joy.

After speaking with a friend, Solomon the Luckbringer travels to Candlekeep by way of prayer.

Once there he makes his way to the library and asks for books containing information on religion and history as well as planar things. He spends a great deal of time pouring over the books making notes on a loose page of his journal. Once done with one stack of books he returns them to the shelves and goes after more books on the same subjects. Trying to make connections between written texts and tomes.

When his eyes grow too heavy to remain open he makes his way to the Inn and returns the next day to do more of the same.

A letter is delivered to the gates of Candlekeep. The messenger states that it is for the Avowed named Emrys. He waits at the gate until someone other than a guard takes the scroll tube from him. He would not give it to anyone other than an Avowed of Candlekeep. He would explain to them that it is for Emrys' eyes only, before returning to the Way of Lions.

A Dwarf will leave word with a guard declaring himself Fenar Ironfort. He would claim that he has been gone on an extended absence and is willing to return to his duties at Candlekeep.

As the Gate wardens would take note, the Priest Harrison Remillard of the Song of the Morning Temple would enter the Keep's grounds under the goodwill and warmth of his lord Lathander. Making a steadfast approach to the Library, he therein commissions a Scribe to make a copy of a particular book pertinent to his faith. Whilst waiting for the delicate work to be completed, he takes humble advantage of Winthrop's hospitality. A day later he completes the agreed upon transaction with the Scribe and heads South again.

Word spreads from the library fortress that current Guide Alexandra Keenan has been asked to fill a newly vacant Great Reader position.
As a result, the Keeper of the Tomes will soon appoint a new Guide of Candlekeep!

A letter was left with the guards at candlekeep, a young boy having delivered it, hopefully receiving a small fee as thanks for delivering whatever the letter was, all that the guards knew is that it was addressed to the new Guide of Candlekeep.
