Monuments of Flesh & Bone

A unsettling chill of something dark and sinister befalls the already decrepit air that captivates the area north of Bauldur's Gate. The influence of evil grows strong from the direction giving off a pungent aura of death and decay. Dark clouds loom over the horizon giving forth an ill-omen to the already unsettling atmosphere from the direction of the Fields of the Dead yonder, while a ominous moan echos through-out the air in symphony to the howling winds that cascade through the thick air.

Within the area of the Fields of the Dead something would seem off, the area while already dark and sinister in it's own natural habitat has grown un-naturally thick of undead. Although. . . The undead in question seem oddly out of place. They patrol around the region in small ranks wandering around the fields of death and decay in an endless timely march. They walk in order with a sense of purpose almost as they patrol around the area with steadfast determination and a watchful eye. On the plates of armor and ruined leather and cloth garbs would lie a strange symbol of a beholder that would draw them out from the other plain looking undead that wander aimlessly around the grave yards yonder.

The undead marching would seem ever watchful for something although rumor has it that those who have come into contact with the odd pair of patroling legionaries of undeath are not attacked at all. Instead if someone gained the attention of the undead legionaries they would simply scan them thoroughly only for but moment before continuing to march onward. As they come into contact with an undead that is not wearing the badge of the beholder they lash out against them attacking them with little warning and in their victory or defeat they drag the remains of the fallen along in their march.

Within the epicenter of the Fields of the dead would lie 3 large pillars of bones and gore that spring up from the ground as the area around the bone pillars soon govern their own negative aura of desecration. Slowly the dead rise up from around these 3 monuments of bone gathering in numbers similar to the legionaries of undead patrolling around the area. Some would even notice the small packs of undead legionnaire patrolmen make their rounds returning to the necrotic totems at the epi-center with the undead remains of both friendly and hostile undead. As they walk within the vicinity of the totems of bone they would fall onto the floor as an inanimate pile of bones and marrow once again along with the remains they dragged along with them. Only to be replaced by another pile sitting somewhere nearby the totems.

The 3 large bone totems stand tall as the undead patrol and conquest around it in an endless cycle of civil war. On the totems in question lie 3 strange symbols that look similar to the badge of the beholder pinned onto the undead legionaries that roam the region. Underneath the symbols each totem holds three different text that read:

"For we are those who witness."
"For we are those who judge."
"For we are those who die."

* As he slept in a gloomy little room rented in the slums of Baldur's Gate, Angbaal was awakened by an intense sensation.

He had the impression that a spell had just been casted near him.

Sweaty face, believing himself in danger in the face of some hostile mage, he looked at the room. She was empty, silent and deserted.

He understood that this energetic wave did not come from this room, nor even from the surroundings of the inn.

But where did she come from?

He put on his clothes, not yet fully awake, but suddenly excited by this phenomenon.

Being a necromancer broken with this magic, it did not take him long to perceive that this force came from the North.

He crossed the gates of the city without finishing his night's sleep, his eyes red and alert, in search of subtle variations of the Web. He eventually identified the regional source of this phenomenon that radiated throughout the northern region.

This source came from the Fields of the Dead, and it was there that he would go, attracted by it as an insect is attracted to the light. *

Once the man reaches the Field of the Dead it would probably not take long for him to witness the small civil war taking place in the region between the two undead factions. Small patrols of skeletal legionaries roam around the area slaying all manner of undead in the region and dragging them away into the distance towards the center of the fields of the dead. The legionaries taking the fight against their own kin all seem to bare some sort of symbol of a beholder on their garments.

The sound of laughter can be heard echoing from from the depths of the BG Graveyards as an unsettling chill greets the air within. The graveyard would seem as normal expect for the odd sound of playful children echoing within the air around the grave-sight. Those who would enter the graveyard might quickly notice that something strange is amiss as the entire area is riddled with heavy desecration and more skeletal wanderers then normal traverse the inner sanctum of the graveyard. Deep within the heart of the of the grave-sight would lie a single large bone pillar, it's length stretching high within the sky casting a large shadow upon the lands below.

The laughter and playful cheers of playing children seem to be emitting from the bone pillars location as well as the soft chime of a church bell ringing softly in symphony to the blissful sound of. . .

Later that very same night, a young adventurer was seen at the fire camp near the city of Baldurs gate, his brow was sweat covered as he told a tale of horror to an old paladin and others resting there currently. The young man spoke of having gone into the cursed graveyard, as is typical of new adventurers, to test his mettle against the weaker undead foe and perhaps find riches in the ruins. However, as he ventured further into the cursed crypt he spoke of hearing whispers and laughter in the dark, echoing softly in the chill wind.

Catching his breath and taking an offered drink from one of the people at the fire he continued to speak of the horrors he had seen, skeletons the size of ogres as well as altars, body parts and other bits too horrible to mention strewn across the graves. In mere moments he claimed that he had been overwhelmed by creatures not known to usually inhabit these parts and he ran had to run away.

After consoling the young man he was seen heading into the city of Baldurs gate, likely seeking a place to forget about everything he saw by drinking the memories away in a tavern of some kind

Left at the fire camp the night was still ongoing, the old knight and others silent, looking at one another.. a slight nod shared as they went to stock up, grabbing their gear and ensuring holy water was spread out a plenty between all of the group before they went into the graveyard to investigate the young mans earlier claims.
They would not be disappointed..
Image
Straight away the party would be encircled by creatures otherwordly, skeletons as tall as tree's as well as hordes of zombies encroaching upon them, trying to pull them down and overwhelm them, their teeth gnashing as their claws tried to find any purchase on the metal armour of the group.

All the while laughter would echo in the graveyard, softly at first, the noise, grunts and groans of the battle would easily overpower it, though as each undead creature fell the noise amplified, a cacophony of shrill cackling thundering in the groups eardrums.. more and more undead raised themselves from the graves.

One of the adventurers fell as the others tried to stand over her, ensuring she was not dragged away by skeletal hands.
Image
What felt like hours later, the group managed to carry the woman away, the others holding back the oncoming horde as they escaped barely with their lives from the graveyard.

All the while laughter kept following them...

Rumors would spread that a heavy channel of negative energy would pulse from within the center of the cloak wood forest. Those who would venture into the forest would find the bodies of many dead shadow druids littered about the forest as signs of a struggle is made quite obvious with the mixture of blood, gore and magic residue. Whispers of a dark ritual emit from the within the forest as a darker deed takes place and the bodies of dead shadow druids and a hin necromancer were found by some brave adventurers who confronted the scene.

Within the veil of the night a hushed-whisper would echo as a hum and chant of dark blessings ebbs and flows in the air in the norther sword coast. A dark-deed come-th and an even darker reward is to be received from the events that transpired today as the ritual of communication is spoken by way of bone and rot...

Image

My lord... There has been many steps taken today to further the steps upon your path you have laid before me and my apostates. There is a balance in all things as you foretold to me so many moons ago... Life & death... Light and Darkness... But in this balance do we who tug the line towards the domain YOU, your holiness... have forsaken upon us and our enemies.

The Elder Circle...

Image

A clear opposition to this balance you seek to sway... They preach the word of balance, Promise the link of true nature, Vow upon the testaments of equality. They, through my eyes and the eyes of the many, they carry themselves as liberators and beacons of hope against the dark perils that plague the lands. Hunters who in turn only defend the hunted... the weak... and the insignificant...

Image

They have done many things to off-set the balance they hold so close to represent... Consecrated our lands in the fields of the dead... Sullied our knights under your domain... Killed our pastors and priest upon a whim of rebuttal.

Image

Image

Today they will given a lesson and an indication to what happens when they gain the attention of your chosen my lord... A symbol of what the gaze from an apostate of your faith, merely a fraction of your gift... can do to those who do not bend the knee.

Image

They frolic merrily in their circle, an afront to the Three... And a afront to you... They must learn to respect and fear the Three...

Their last Arch-druid failed to acknowledged this... Failed to understand my message... Failed to understand my influence....

Mayhaps he will think differently now... once he sees what his successor is to become from this...
