Nearly a tenday and a half since his initial visit, the blue-cloaked elf would continue to make appearances outside the orphanage, once during the day, and once at night. In the most recent days, the elf could be seen exiting one of the dwellings in close proximity to the orphanage, and locking the door behind him as he left. Whether or not he resided there permanently would seem unlikely, given that the elf only enters the abode for several hours at a time after his nightly visits with the children. Each time he does visit them, however, the blue-cloaked elf would make sure to relay another tale to the youngsters, and with each telling he chooses a story more grandiose than the last.

On the eve of Uktar 19, in the waning hours of the day, the elf exits the dwelling and lifts a gloved hand vaguely in greeting towards a pair of orphans outside, then proceeds to move to lean against a corner of a wall... and one with a relatively clear line of sight of all three intersecting streets.

Image

"As promised... I will tell you about the time the elves of Doron Amar, and a human paladin named Lance, decided to pay the great white dragon near Nashkel a visit."

No sooner had the elf rubbed his gloved hands together and begun his tale, a tall woman donning a long red-hooded cloak wandered past, stopping mid-stride to stand next to the elf. She whispered something sidelong then that prompted the elf to balk lightly, and respond out-loud in a decidedly flat tone. The red-cloaked woman and blue-cloaked elfs conversation would seem brief, and the details would only be overheard by the orphans outside. Regardless of the subject matter, the elfs body language and responses, perhaps predictably(for him), would appear somewhat aloof, bordering on disinterested, as he scanned up and down the streets while the woman spoke.

A short while later, the red-cloaked and hooded woman would depart with a head-shake, while the elf shrugged towards the children and attempted to pick up where he left off...

"Now, where was I...? Ah yes, a great white dragon..."

A wood-elf has been busy working the streets of the Gate warning those of his dark cousins and bringing awareness to Drow related crimes. Many shrug him off, thinking his concerns are ill placed as the city is surrounded by a wall and protected by the best mercenaries the coast has to offer. Some even go so far as to claim that Drow are merely an old wives' tale used to keep children in line.

Despite this, he's setup a temporary private detective agency out of suite 3 in the Helm and Cloak inn located in the Palace District of the Gate. He’s offered a one bag reward for any information leading to the capture or death of a Drow. Also offered is a private detective service: no Drow related case is too small.

Those that visit the particular inn room note that the door is locked and a sign written in common on the door reads “Gone Fishing in the Upperdark. Please slide leads or case files under the door.” At the bottom of the note appears to be some sort of stamped emblem with a design of a broken arrow over a tear drop.

A gruesome severed head was found right outside the hall of wonders in the Palace district. Kyal a paladin of Torm with the aid of Berrick Hardhammer and Bhor Stonecutter tried to find clues but found none.

Who could with so evil intent and skill, put the head in such close proximity to the palace in broad daylight?
They turn in the head to the city watch with a full report.

Travel by foot was solemn, as the Half-Elven Jon Smythe skirted the Chionthar's shore eastward, the trail well worn and without incident, yet, for the traveler in question, in the mind, each step bringing another nascent memory to the surface—memories forgotten for years now, but random and with force, resurfacing.

From a distance, the familiar city walls and turrets stood tall, ominous even. Smythe, as he placed one foot in front of another, processed one memory after another, he would often look upward at the growing architecture, pause, then continue again his march. This new chapter was not anticipated, not expected, and with doubt as to purpose lingering behind each thought of the future.

But without a doubt, Smythe new that what he possessed now, in knowledge, that could only manifest by and through this place, this Baldur's Gate.

Now, entering the farmlands and able to hear and smell the city as sensations flowed upward and over the looming walls, he began to possess the idea, this consideration that gave him the the urge to grin and almost burst forth with laughter, that
of course, having what he had now in possession in mind, it could only be this way, that from namesake to Man, beginning to what was likely an End, it must be this City.

Image

Coming up the hill from the trail head nearer the river, Smythe caught eye of something that ignited another memory, and in his final steps of this return march, he paused at a place that was the end of a chapter in Life..., so long ago. Reaching the place, he knelt down and placed his bookseller's valise near him, to consider.

"All the things we lose...companions being the worst of it..." he remarked, aloud, as relived his past. "Will I have the blessing of luck to rekindle those friendships, do these men and women even still live?" Smythe stood up and crossed his arms, looking down upon the grate with at first a blank stare, then, he caught himself laughing aloud at the latest thought that came mind: "Should they still live, let's hope I do not owe them coin!"

Whispers. Such an innocuous thing... At least, that's what most people have come to believe.

Over the past few weeks there have been a great many accounts by various individuals, all fitting the same type of description. "I feel like I'm being watched", "I feel like someone is following me", "I could swear there was something, -right- behind me". Some of these accounts have come from high ranking officials and governmental representatives. Merchants, common folk, guards and even a few adventurers have mentioned seeing "living shadows" on their stroll through the city. The common folk, having little else to talk about, have taken the liberty of giving the phenomenon a name. Based on the idle conversations around town, it seems they've taken a particular liking to the name "The Obsidian Phantom" Given the fickle and superstitious nature of the populace the phenomenon has quickly turned into a conversation piece, and while many of the accounts that are spoken about tell of an "uneasy feeling of a presence" nobody has seen nor confirmed it's actual existence.

A pair of hidden eyes glinted, peering from under hood pulled low, as they lingered on the darkly armored form crouched in the bushes a short distance from the Duchal Palace. A soft rustle of cloth followed, as the same hooded head tilted side to side in curiosity, the lightest 'tsk' slithering out through masked mouth as the armored figure seemed to watch the interactions between the various individuals in the courtyard.

As dawn gave way to morn, the pair of eyes followed after the armored figure, now on the move, as did the hushed padding of quiet steps.
A rusty door or two in the East Gate would creak open and shut sometime later, and a brief whisper offered from hunter to quarry.

The pair of hidden eyes continued to persist after the armored form, who was no longer hooded and masked, or attempting to lurk, as they departed the East Gate towards the farmlands... either indifferent, unaware, or simply absent of reaction towards pursuing shadow.

Someone, indeed, was being watched.

Bystanders coming and going, glances being shared, mannerisms and conversations however trivial, were all contributing to the orchestra being played for his carefully attuned ear in the courtyard of the Duchal Palace. A veritable symphony on full display despite the increasing number of vagrants, employees and officials arriving and departing from the grounds. A tapestry that was being painted right before his eyes, each individual representing a series of strings intricately weaving together to create a picture perfect image... so long as you knew how to look. Even with the unforeseen interruption of his uninvited guest, the leather-bound figure maintained his focus precisely where he intended it to be. After-all, the true deception wasn't that he needed to remain unseen, it was his motivation and -who- or -what- he was actually observing that held significance. Prying eyes or not his intentions remained just that, his. He waited patiently, taking note of each individual and their interactions with one another. The distance at which they stood from one another, the tone of voice in comparison to others they had spoken to, defensive postures, even the fidgeting of their hands as they spoke. Each one contributing in their own way to the overall picture. As the night pressed on he continued to lie in silence until the arrival of the morning dawn... and, having achieved what he sought to, he proceeded to move through the district toward the eastern gate, prowler in tow. In an effort to convince his would-be stalker to break contact he made a calculated decision to remove his hood. For the next several hours he traversed the surrounding area in circles eventually making his way to Beregost and then back again, this time... without being followed. Shortly thereafter he proceeded to his next piece of art, where he would remain, focused, alert and observant.

Let the games begin.

A small group of individuals gather at the pop up office of the patrol watch sergeant at the round cake stall in the market place. Cake in one hand and hot drink in the other he tries to pacify a group of citizens concerned about being followed. Some claim to have seen the fellow, others less certain. One or two offer descriptions and names, one even declares he saw them head off on the very long journey south to Beregost. Conflicted a moment between round cake and hot drink, the Watch bites at the round cake before explaining. "In this City citizens I have found everyone watches...."a second bite and an approving nod to the cake stall holder called Donutt" Look these things happen but I am on it with the dedication of the full resources of the Watch we will draw up an oil painting and a wall display to chart the progress, I will order ...someone to look into things, fair enough? We have some time while he walks south." He opts for the drink this time with a nod to another trader called Tee.

Quietly padded steps hurry along the cobblestone just after the moon rises. Rhythmical shallow breaths repeat in a practiced fashion as a silhouette dances against the black back drop painted over the Duchal Palace, that is... until it settles in a nearby alleyway. Once more, people of all ilk carry on about their business both reputable and otherwise, painfully unaware of the predatory gaze cast over them in the silence of night. At least that was the intention. With a stillness of an undisturbed river he waited, carefully examining each piece of his unsolved puzzle. He was patient and yet uncharacteristically anxious at the same time. He made a mistake once already allowing a glimpse, however fleeting, to penetrate the curtain he operates behind. Carelessness was not an option and it wasn't a miscalculation he would allow himself to make again.

Yet again he was perched for the opportunity to discover a single word, moment, or conversation that would tighten the noose around the throat of mystery. A weakness he could and -would- exploit. How much longer would he be forced to wait? It didn't matter. He would wait as long as he needed to. Like a spectre in the wind he was weightless, fluid and graceful, putting himself within earshot of unsuspecting vagrants as they offered whispers into the cold night air. All in the hopes of casting a light on the single shadow that had eluded him thus far. A name, and a mistake. With the utterance of so little it could change... so much. It wasn't a matter of if, but when.

Clinging to the shadows like wet-cloth to skin he slipped further along the walls surrounding the outside of the courtyard putting himself within arms reach of the palace doors. Discussions echoed throughout the chamber as the doors swung wide with each occupant leaving or arriving allowing him to collect scattered pieces of conversation even from within it's halls. It is here that he would wait until morning, poised and vigilant. Just before the arrival of the unwelcomed rays of the sun he found himself quickly making pacing along the tradeway, one day closer to his goal. "Soon." he muttered to himself.

A shadow creeps around the docks, tail lightly and nimbly keeping her balance as she wanders down to a forgotten shrine. A bag of gold and a letter left at the base of a mounted mask is left. With it, a message intent for another that would likely come across it ~Oberon~ a simple name, or phrase is left on the sealed parchment for it's intended purpose.

Later in the evening, while the dock workers leave work to drink, a lovely Lithe Tiefling buys drinks for those interested in talking about the various muggings taking place in the city. She offers Rum, Stiens of ale, Whiskey, and anything the person is willing to drink while telling their tales of what they seen or what happened to them.

Though night falls thick upon the city of Baldur's Gate, the half-Elven Jon Smythe finally crossed the threshold of the physical outer walls and emotional inner ones, lighting a lantern both as practical and spiritual benefit. Standing at the north gate, Smythe visage brightens by not only lantern light, but by mood—an energy of anxiousness and curiosity, for years of absence may give rise to surprise in a positive manner, he begins to think inwardly, manifested by an uncontrollable smile arriving outwardly on his face.

A memory of ways of the people of the Gate begins to return, and this memory that after nightfall, so many citizens enter into the inns and taverns to satiate themselves, Smythe seems propelled to inquire and reconnect...his forward path a straight arrow toward the Helm & Cloak feast house.

Three shadows convene in the dark corner of a forgotten basement inside the city of Baldurs Gate. Two of the faceless individuals, A Tiefling and Halfling, turn toward the larger hooded figure, awaiting his instruction.

"Well done with those reports." he says simply before continuing. "Sojak, I need you to continue looking into the individuals you reffered to in your report. I want to know why they were so interested in the affairs of that organization and the people within it. -Every -detail -Sojak" The man emphasizes each word to indicate it's importance. "This is your top priority for now. "

The Tiefling, clad in dark leathers simply nods. "Of course Boss."

With Sojak's reply, the hooded man turns his attention to the Halfling who stands before him. "Slade. Find those documents. Use every contact at your disposal to find out what you can. I want to know who has them, the merchants they implicate, and what it's going to require to procure them. Once you have received all you can on the matter, report to me immediately."

The Halfling grunts with a gentle nod of his head, tugging the top of his hood taught without so much as a whisper.

"Good." The man remarks. "There are a few individuals that will be coming in and out of here on my behalf. See they get what they need."

With that, the masked man turns and ascends up the darkened stairwell disappearing into the cold night air.
