He isn't saying that the beholders being able to see you is a bug. He is saying remaining stealthed while petrified is a bug.

Ultimately, I see the frustration on my end too. But as Gedwey says, that is a prime example of a place and situation to only visit when prepared and in a large group.

Adventuring is dangerous, an' all. :D

That said, having it apply crumbling damage of, say, 5% per turn after 20-30 turns sounds sensible. Gives ample time for a rescue, still kills you dead if it doesn't.

Doesn't matter how big your group is if no one can spot you. Also... Dangerous.. sure.. for your PC.. but perma stone I can't play my character anymore isn't a punishment to the PC, it is a punishment to you.. I don't think games should punish the players. Edit: Games SHOULDN'T punish the players.

I THINK you get unpetrified after 5 minutes. Or it used to.

How do you do things like blend with the shadows or hide behind a potted plant, adjusting your line of sight in relation to those who might see you while a statue? Stealth isn't invisibility.

Stealth is a conscious effort on behalf of a party avoiding being detected.

It is like a stance. It involves positioning so you would use your environment to conceal your location and then being petrified in said concealment does make some sense.

However, aside being unenjoyable and needlessly irritating OOC where revives are concerned, the mechanics are overly simplistic. When someone is actively searching/detecting one can assume they are actually looking around and investigating . That checks against the stealth skills as the hiding party takes measures to avoid detection.

The statue cannot take any action to avoid being uncovered once it's location is discovered. Between that and for OOC convenience, statues should have their stance mode cancelled and come out of stealth. It's not like invisibility as stated previously. The cons outweigh the pros in my opinion.

I'm confused, because a few months ago petrification definitely wore off after 3-5 minutes or some such, at least that's what Terri taught me.

it wore off one in my characters when he was petrified fighting the yuan ti queen a few months ago and extending its duration hasn’t been in any patch notes AFAIK.

As to the issue pertaining to stealth it’s kind of a mixed bag. If you are soloing and get petrified you can wait it out. (I had HiPSed right when the queen hit me with it so I ended up safely hidden from her.) with a group it can be irritating when no one can find a statute.

I’m fine with it the way it is, would be equally fine if they changed it.

Getting petrified lasts longer than 5 minutes, and yeah, it's annoying as heck.

Since we're on the subject of creatures that petrify, I might as well share some recent wonky experiences... with the baby beholder in gnoll caves, no less. Now, I'm not sure if this wonkiness applies to all creatures that petrify, but this was one of the weirdest things I've seen, ever:

While on on of my high level characters, I saw another stealthed character go to kill the baby beholder. Upon attacking out of stealth and killing the beholder, and for no apparent reason, the other character dropped dead and went straight to fugue. I asked them in tells what happened, and they could see nothing in combat log to indicate how they died. I raised them, did some RP, we went on our merry way. A few weeks later, that same character gets fugue'd by the beholder again, after attacking it from stealth. Once again, no combat log indication as to why.

So, a week later, and as I'm in the middle of getting my recently rcr'd level 30 through the mid level 20's again, I decide to go try and kill the baby beholder myself. Needless to say, this character is more than capable of killing the mob in a round. Lo and behold, my first flurry kills it, BUT... whammo, my character gets petrified. There's no failed save in the combat log, nor is there anything to indicate the beholder has even attacked my character. Luckily for me, my character was out of stealth, and, also luckily for me, a DM came online... after I had stood there for at least 10 - 15 minutes, picking my nose IRL.

As for how the other character I saw die, I could only surmise that it had something to do with this instant-petrify weirdness(maybe because they had less HP?)

Aside from all that, I totally vote for crumbling to death, or anything that doesn't involve having to wait for ages(or metagaming by getting OOC help).
There are no level 30's, only level 20's with benefits...

This exact scenario has happened twice.. both were beholders, first time in Forest of Wyrms, this time was in the cave at Graypeak Mountains. Really seems to me that it lasted longer than 5 minutes given that I was petrified before the fight started, discussed for a couple minutes what to do, then waited for a friend to relog with his spotter to come rescue me. Same for Forest of Wyrms.. Can't say I had a stopwatch out though.

I’ve had similar auto petrify issues killing beholders before. Like attack from stealth, kill in the first flurry, get stoned with no save anyway. Enough so that I just avoid them while solo now.

While we’re on the subject, protection from petrification scrolls should totally be a thing.
