A Heart In A Jar

The blood was still slowly seeping out of the continously throbbing heart, his thoughts were racing. He had been looking for explanations of natural phenomena, locked away as secrets in the Tan'ari's heart. All in vain, the little bit of blood he had been able to obtain from the extracted balor's heart had been minimal. Any attempts of reproduction had utterly failed, he was about to give up on the matter.

Image
[The Tan'ari's heart, some trails of blood still mingling with the translucent nutrient solution]

His thoughts drifted off, it had been a harsh undertaking, it had taken almost the entire Uktar and parts of the Marpenoth. All had begun with attempts to gather a group of willing abbil, it had felt shabby, asking other drow for aid like a petitioner. Many denied him straight away, others accepted only to always lack the courage to show their pittyful faces when called to arms.

Two scouting missions with a different assortment of people had basically failed, in the end they had found the balor in an entirely different area, not the Cave initially thought of as its lair.

The group that acted on his request in the end consisted of Renor, who had proven very capable in fights, though he seemed mentally unstable sometimes leaving a lot left to desire in his behaviour.

Cinder a drow male he had seen in the tunnels surrounding Sshamath quite few times prior, seemed not to be a man of many words, mainly silently, he had been hacking away at their opponents with his two weapons. A grim hatred towards devils and demons had seemed to be his driving force.

Sz'vet was, he was in a way also quiet but differently, more in a calm manner, he did talk but if he did it always seemed thought through somehow, he had been raining death upon their opponents with arrows from the shadows, though he did not shy away from close quarters either, delivering painful blows to his unaware enemies.

Tessa his subservient from the School of Necromancy and somewhat bravely fought alongside them, well prepared it seemed with potions and even scrolls with which she provided astonishingly powerful support in form and shape of water elementals that fiercely fought the fire giants on their way to the Tan'ari.

Image
[The balor as he came charging at them sure of its own victory]

Lastly there was Aunrae this strangely different of their kin, her views on Ilbith were most troubling to him, her fighting abilities, magical prowess and even more impressively her utmost ability to inspire courage in the hearts of her companions.
There was a moment in time where the balor was about to strike them in fear of their lives, considering a retreat but she prevailed her courage instilling words were what drove their small group of assorted to victory.

K'yon smiled at the thought of it and got himself ready for yet another row of tests with the little bit of balor blood he had left, much less devastated at his low chance to suceed.

((Thanks to DM Dialectic for making this possible and sponsoring the idea and to everyone who's helped suceeding at this truly difficult task))

The Manifold Of Things

He had done it, it was finished, on the front of his spellbook sat his own, very own unique, as it had to be, unless he wanted to fall prey to foul curses, magically inscribed personal sigil consisting of five runes, not only his favourite number but also a very, stable construct the way he has shaped it. ImageIt was a thing of beauty, he watched the magical currents twist and twirl, he had woven protective wards and some of the strongest curses into this one rune, specifically created for his spellbook's protections.

The runes were positioned in ways they could form different shapes through convections between one and another. Was the integrated spell just a weak one, it could be stored in one of the singular outside runes, did it need more power, two of the opposite outside runes could be utilised, more powerful weavings could be put into a conglomerate of three or four of the runes, until finally the utilisation of all runes combined allowed fire the most powerful of spells to be imbued.
Image
[a visualisation of magical currents flowing through and around runes]

The details about its defensive capabilites he had tried to forget and cloud as much in his mind as possible to further protect the contents. Not only did he keep his spells in this book, also personal notes at intricacies and possible modifications, more importantly however his research was immortalised onto the pages specifically created for a sheer endless lifespan. He smiled at the thought of it.

((The rune was my first attempt at using paint 3D I might improve on it in the future if I am able to and find the time.))

Times Hundred

Tentacles over tentacles were lashing after him, he would stumble he would stagger yet he would not fall. Mind blast after mind blast hit or missed him in his nimble dance.

Their expedition had started strangely, the one betting to slay the elder brain all by himself had taken considerable punishment from mind blasts, leaving him unable to act and giant fists of brain golems. A special breed of golems, K'yon had never seen before, they must have been the Illithid's own creation.
They fell so fast that K'yon was not able to concern himself with their capabilities however.

They encountered never-ending legions of Illithids, Ulitharids, Intellect Devourers and the aforementioned Golems. The one faring the worst was definitely the one that had bet to kill the elder brain all by himself. K'yon had even had to heal him several times and considered claiming he had failed their bet, considering how much help they granted him to achieve his goal. All others, Da'dryn Mor'hyanda a mighty drow warrior, that was barely ever even slowed down by the masses, Aunrae, who as many times before, had stood tall against his foes and he himself who he had barely even been touched.
They all had fared quantities better than him. It was laughable that he of them all was to beat this epicenter of the Illithid power in this area, the ruler of their kin, their supreme intelligence.

Now they were watching him tentacles over tentacles were lashing after him, he would stumble, he would stagger, yet he would not fall. Mind blast after mind blast hit or missed him in his nimble dance, he was hurt but that only spurred his will. He utilized all he had at his disposal, potions, scrolls and even wands. Their supportive effects began to wear off one by one as the monsters began to fall, their numbers dwindling rapidly.

Moments later a grinning Keeshe, cut the last of the elder brains tentacles, severing its remaining defense, its minions slain it was subjected to K'yon's cutting instruments.
Image
[The Elder Brain before being cut down to its helpless state ]

He took large amounts of the the elder brains mass, filled it into jars and withdrew fluid from the pool, the collectives' cognitive center swam in.
A bitter sweet victory, he gained knowledge and valuable substances but a grinning Keeshe expected his pay.

Three-hundred times hundred gold pieces he had requested, once more K'yon considered to remind Keeshe of all the help he had received by his and the others' hands and to call off the deal.

K'yon decided against it, he could lose a capable mercenary, even more importantly though his reputation, so he handed over the hundred bags each containing three-hundred pieces of gold, a time consuming transaction, his mind already busy with planning a further expedition to explore the wonders of the hive, it had had laboratories filled with macabre things, things he did not even dare to describe intriguing his very spirit.

((I do not own the copyrights to the 300 logo, it just seemed a cool idea to use it for this. I might slow down on the frequency of the bio updates and go over to longer stories, though I am uncertain it is a good choice for this medium XD... we'll see happy to hear opinions ;) ))

Murder In The Mines

After a horrible cycle K'yon had had, he finally made himself write that damned report, a deep fear of failure clung to his heart. He had made somewhat of a scene in Gloura's, setting the bar board ablaze with some spilled whine, nothing really impactful, yet everyone had gotten to feel his foul mood this day.
ImageImageImage

Having finished the report, with his sigil protecting it from any attempts of those who should not see what was written therein, he quickly sent the report to his superior, his troops were safely tucked away in a sanctuary waiting for his return.
His heart felt a little lighter as he went to rest between his troops, he had teleported back to. Ah his troops, he liked the sound of it.

((This is for a quest that K'yon was given by his Mentor High Necromancer L' Beldroin and is to be treated as confidential, please really not metagaming. Only those that I chose to involve in this are supposed to know about this. Thank you BlackmanD for this awesome opportunity and really hard nut to crack only after many many times of thinking about all the stuff I was able to come to a good conclusion thank you!))

The way I did the writing is a bit experimental, therefore it is not perfect yet. But already I think it looks pretty amazing. Thanks for reading ;) and as always I am happy about critique, which I get only little of XD))

K'yon can be seen walking hectically through the School of Necromancy trying to find any and all information about necromantic entities in general and more specifically those being able to possess hosts, leaving marks aused by negative energy upon them.

The Necromancer's Journal

If he wasn't so furious he could have laughed. He had listened to commoners near the City these surfacers called Baldur's Gate and overheard a conversation about a great necromancer that was raising the dead at the cemetery.

Curious of the human's magical prowess after he had found the Netherese to be quite versed with the weave he had set out to find that oh so powerful necromancer, only to find him slain by some simple adventurer that could barely defeat these slowly moving humble creations that stunk of their rotting organs and were more falling apart then staying together.

Besides these annoying creatures he had also had to deal with a half-elf that quickly grew suspicious of him, but luckily his summoned Brachina who he had turn into human form was able to distract the young adventurer long and well enough so he could continue his search unhindered.

Image

So all he could find was that Journal, not only was the author barely able to write in Iokharic much of what he had written was also nonsense.
One did not need a pentagram, that was superstitious folly, the same was true for the blood mentioned. Even laying the body out in a certain fashion was completely unneeded, which necromancer that was worth even the slightest would merely thing about touching such corpses?

Solely the advice with the black onyx gem was true though he would have used multiple of them to create a much more potent creature. Admittedly to some extend the advice to use a creature with bones was not completely wrong either but he believed that to just be common sense.

The Iokharic used called what the Necromancer described the "The Masterful Necromantic Arts", thinking of it made him chuckle. The Iokharic at the end was complete gibberish, apparently the "Necromancer" wanted to make it look like he truly knew how to write his incantation in the letters of mages.

What a pitiful failure, he hoped his inquiries on a certain other Necromancer would show more fruitful.

((Thank you for your nice RP [Androoh] Malakai Kesavan it was very entertaining and I appreciate that you did not call the cavalry upon your suspicion right away, if at all ;).

Oh and also thanks a lot to Glymuldor Gryxulmyr for giving me the idea for this whole enterprise ;) ))

Lyra

He had returned from the lower dark, a place that had taught him many-a-thing, it had changed his thinking about magic itself and how he stood towards it. Once a nuisance he had to endure, he had in the dark, unforgiven place that was the lower dark, learned to embrace it in all its facets and continued doing so.

He had learned of the ancient empire of the Netherese and how, simple humans, these pittyful creatures had been able to weave magic beyond that even he and his ancestors were capable of. K'yon had not necessarily found proof of their most outrageous deeds but enough indications of wondrous achievements beyond belief to be ignored.
This realization had shattered his understanding of the world, it took him long to fully grasp what that meant, all he had ever known was, drow being the far superior race, surpassing all of these lesser races by far. This train of thought had been put on a serious trial and had to eventually be revoked reluctantly by K'yon.

Image [One of the floating Cities K'yon had found depictions of]

While this was still occupying him, his return to Sshamath brought him a new mentor, a female drow, cunning and keen, keen on making his life a misery, Lyra.
Whatever he did, he always strove to exceed the schools expectations towards their attendees, yet she always found a reason to moan and never failed to detail in which way he had managed to disappoint her.
Not only that however, she also had forced him into incredibly dangerous combat situations all the while restricting him in his methods of dealing with said gruesome environments.

He had gotten into the habit of utilising a heavily warded summon, Death Slaad for their enormous regeneration, the ability to knockdown any enemies attempting to assault him and they even had this frightful aura that could leave opponents unable to move as they dreaded the Slaad's presence. K'yon wasn't sure how it worked as this has never affected him but somehow it did, must have been something pressing on the weaker minds.

Image [Terrifying Death Slaad are especially sadistic and cruel, they lead their red and blue breathren into battle]

Now Lyra brought him into areas with the most vicious creatures and forced him to deal with them without any summoning, not only did this force him into a highly uncomfortable position, having to deal with things face on, it also required him to come up with ways to organise his weavings in a completely new fashion. Doing this on the fly was simply too much for anyone, no matter how talented and highly flexible in thought. Clearly if he struggled with it, noone would deal with it any better.

How many times had he since thought about the enjoyment of her slow and painful death.

However inconvenient her treatment was after several months of it he had to admit an incredible jump in his abilities. Not only had she furthered his utilisation of the many different weavings to fight wide arrays of monsters, she had also introduced him to the incredibly efficient Arcane Fire, many of the different ways to alter his weavings, the massive impact a single domination spell could have, how to set up nearly impenetrable defensive wards and lastly all the thinking and tinkering with his entire arsenal of weavings had lead to a true epiphany.
He had perfected killing the elementals east of mistlake allowing him a nearly unlimited supply of the irradiating soil he used for his experimentations.

Image [A ray of arcane fire on its way to its destined victim]

With his promotion to the rank of Necromancer her reign over him as mentor had come to an end, his many thoughts of revenge had not completely died, for that there had been too much humiliation, it had however lost priority over a variety of other more pressing matters.

The Ambush

His pointy ears were perked up, he could hear them coming, from all three directions at once. They were cursing, all of them. They had come up with a plan, a three-pronged attack onto the Illithids.

The main goal had been to surprise them, attack from multiple angles, not only to surprise them, quickly pick off their mind-controlled thralls, but also to avoid their cone shaped mind blasts to blanket them all, rather only singular targets, reducing their effectiveness greatly.

K'yon had used his new position at the School of Necromancy to further his personal goals as so many of his colleagues did. His three Death Teams were supposed to help him "harvest" more Illithid brains, brains he desperately needed to further his research, brains he needed in large numbers, a circumstance that forced him to get creative.

The amounts he required were simply not satisfied by him going out alone, or hiring singular hirelings, besides his attempts to acquire mercenaries fir the task had miserably failed, these scaredy cats had all shooed away from the Illithid hunt.

All that had lead to him coming up with a plan to utilise his Death Teams, which had been assigned to him, as it was common for all Necromancers, in what he had shrouded as a combat and tactics exercise. He simply was unsure if he could utilise his troops as freely as he liked and wanted to avoid any misstep so shortly after taking this new, hard fought for position.

His First Sergeant had come up with an admittedly strategically sound plan, utilising their companies strengths to their fullest. The three scouts, which each team had one of, had done their exploring, found several spots for ambushes and these, the first sergeant had gracefully connected in their plan of assault on three fronts.
A first wave of ambushes was to be done by solely the scouts, a quick but accurate volley was to severely hamper or take out the thralls, leading into a retreat to the second ambush spot for each team.

Image[The elder Sergeant eyeing K'yon suspiciously]

There the acolytes were to lay waste onto the thralls, while further precise shot arrows were to hurt the Illithids, before isolating them entirely from their hopefully now dead minions, to prepare for a final fight at the third ambush location the acolytes and scouts would retreat to.

The main goal of the third ambush position was to be able to further split their own troops to reduce the mindblasts devastating powers even more so. The warrior of the team would be facing the Illithids head on while being supported by the scout and the acolyte from the cliffs above.

Now this was were the plan of his first seargeant ended, a cunning one that seemed to grant them at least a sliver of a chance against the otherwise for his company rather deadly foes, which would do worse than just end their lives.

This was where K'yon had added on, he asked them to retreat to a single position, where they would all meet to, if need be teleport out of danger. Long had he discussed the details with his First Sergeant, the male was worried that his concentration could be interrupted by mindblasts or simply the chaos that might occur in such a dire situation. K'yon had insisted on his addition to the plan much to his military advisor's dismay.

He had prepared the surrounding cliffs with a simple but effective first grade spell called grease, not only did it make them slide rather than fall into the little recess he had chosen, it would also give the Illithids even more of a feeling to swoop down on a nearly defenseless opponent.

His men slid, fell tumbled towards him, expecting him to start channelling the teleport, the last of his soldiers must have had clearly reached a close enough proximity for him to save them all, but it seemed he was waiting for something else entirely as the Illithids drew closer to their precious meal. These beasts required to devour humanoid brains to survive, K'yon could see one of his men falling to his knees begging him to safe them as the tentacles of several dozens of the hungry predators nearly touched the outer rim of his men, it was the Sergeant.

Image [Illithids closing in calmly at their sure to be prey]

A few whispered words, his arms, first spread, then pulled in with force. Blood was quenched out of the Illithids in large currents, they erupted from their body openings and were magically floating towards K'yon. Only moments later every single Monster lay dead in the floor his men had all survived, with the exception of his Sergeant who lay bloodless and pale to the floor. He was so sick of the elder drow always thinking him to be too young too lead. The fourth ambush was a complete sucess, he grinned displaying his perfectly white teeth.

He already knew who was to replace his headstrong Sergeant, Nyphrein, his new old companion, he knew he could trust, largely at least.

He ordered his shocked but relieved men to extract the brains and to store them into the barrels, filled with salty water and a few added substances, they had brought for them. Soon after the cartes began to move.

Experimentations of Shape and Form

His schemes seemed to be moving rather slowly, his research revolving around the manipulation and alteration of the Weave once moving at an incredible pace had turned into this crawling desaster, that had yielded intriguing results though now had been at a standstill for way too long for his liking.

Besides that, there was this incredible nuisance that had caused him much frustration over the last weeks. The surrounding areas around Sshamath were crawling with monsters and more generally creatures that were incredibly resilient against any and all magic.

It had lead him to meddle with the shapeshift weaving. His first points of interest had actually been of a less practical approach. Turning into a dragon or an Illithid, he had hoped to gain isight into their thinking, how they utilised their very specific physique.

Quickly he was frustrated with the outcome of these attempts, not only did he not learn anything of their mental states as they simply did not entail the transformation, he also found himself unable to stimulate their wide array of possibilities, neither could he utilise a red dragon's fire to burn his enemies to a crisp, an ability he had looked forward to. Nor could he utilise the beasts wings to fly, it took him hours of practice in this red dragon's shape to even as much as move the wings a slight bit, for a long time he had struggled even moving them aside, had they once come into an impractical position. One could imagine how annoying this could have been in a fight.

Image[ Turning into a majestic red dragon, only the spiiting of fire just would not come to happen ]

The transformation into an Illithid had probably been the worst of them all, while being a dragon had left him with a somewhat majestic feel, once he had grasped the newly aquired muscles and how to work them at least rudimentary. As Illithid he just felt incredibly disgusting, the tentacles twitching uncontrollable had left him nauseated.
At first attempts he had to quickly return to his original state, he just couldn't endure it.
Getting a grasp of the tentacles made it less painful to take this form, but he was very sure, he would never attempt any kind of transformation into one of these aberrations, no matter how much power there might have been to gain.
Their psyonic potential, the true reason for his interest proved entirely out of reach to him, though he knew a little about the different brain a areas that were used for telekinesis from his own past, he simply stayed unable to tap into the beasts bodies potential.
The lack of understanding and use of the more intricate abilities, be it of mind or body let to his next row of experimentations.

Had he not seen Jhaldrym transform into a brutish fire giant? He had been weirded by this back when he first witnessed it and Lyra, had she not taken that very same shape?

So his transformation attempts carried out this time with an entirely different approach, the transformation were not aimed at understanding or utilising a creatures abilities but rather to make use of their innate physicalities.

A fire giant was tall, stirring their extremely large extremities took some practice but their body was, though much more rough and less agile and elegant, a generally quite similar built vessel. Once he had the hang of it, his swings with the two-handed alchemical greatsword, a weapon he had quickly deemed the most useful in their large powerful hands had had terrifying impact on the practice dolls within the School's premises and later on whatever he would swing it at.

The gigantic size and strength however came at a prize, he was incredibly clumsy and easy to hit by most capable opponents even the many layers of wardings he would put up before transforming, his in comparison frail little body into this behemoth of destruction, would quickly be strained and required renewal to stop enemies from gashing large wounds into his legs and lower parts of his upper body.

The shape of an iron golem proved to be the bane of the heretic warlocks that lingered around the old ruins of Oghrann's. Their magically charged blasts simply could not penetrate the resistance to the Weave that was innate to the golem. Their squeeking joints were something to get used to, more than once this noise had strained K'yon's patience but for this specific task they offered just the right tools and he loved having the right tools.

Image[ The Iron Golem a towering menace to most magically centered opponents ]

There were other notable forms like the hydra that offered a good mixture of offensive capabilities with her numerous heads to attack his enemies and her incredibly strong regeneration, that just made most wounds close themselves in no time. Several undead shapes were able to offer protection from negative energy inflicted damage or diseases and poisons but that seemed a little bit too situational and he just couldn't stand staying in their cold and at times stinking shapes for too long.

One of the master pieces of his transformations was a little unexpected, he turned into a cornugon. It had wings, again, they were a huge nuisance to begin with, moving them proved to be difficult, had he figured out how to move the dragon's wings before, these were in a different position and the muscles were once more hard to pinpoint and activate.
Though as he grasped their motoric functions, he found them incredibly useful in his own defense, slashing at his opponents with his claws, ripping huge chunks out of them with his razor-sharp claws, all the while turning and twisting the incredible durable wings. They functioned like a gigantic surprisingly light and movable shield, a defense nigh impenetrable for most opponents.

Image [ The Cornugon, a grim transformation with strong defensive capabilities ]

After further internalising this dance of clawing into his enemies, all the while shielding his vulnerable body parts with the leather like, no leather would have been less resistant, well maybe a similarity to mithril was there, wings. He then incorporated summoning vampire servants, granting them a few wardings to further their offensive capabilities. The Cornugon shape did not only allow him to defend himself but also his servant, giving their usually frail existence a much greater longevity, an ironic train of thought considering their immortality.

The Alteration of Weavings aimed at increasing their Longevity
by
K'yon Oblodra

Abstract:

For this paper we looked into the manipulation of the Weave in a way that alters the weaving to be more enduring and long lasting.

Introduction:

Weavings can be altered in many a different forms, in this paper we are going to focus specifically on the durations of the different Weavings and how an extension of these influences their uses and potency.

Methods:

The weavings were differentiated in large groups depending on their longevity.
We utilised thin candles with marks to measure weavings of shorter durations and pillar candles with markings to measure those of longer durations.
The durations of the shortest weavings were grouped together. They have shown have durations of about eighteen marks on a thin candle.
Hidden: show
(30 rounds, 1 round per caster level = 180 seconds or 3 Minutes)

The durations of the second group of weavings were already significantly longer. They have shown to have durations that surpass the longevity of a thin candle. On a pillar candle their duration would last for about three marks.
Hidden: show
(30 minutes, 1 minute per caster level)

The duration of the third group of weavings were longer by a tenfold. This means several pillar candles have to be utilised to measure their length. A weaving of this category outlast pretty exactly five pillar candles passing through about thirty marks on the thick pillar candles.
Hidden: show
(300 minutes, 10 minutes per caster level = 300 minutes = 5 hours)

The duration of the fourth group of weavings were longer by accurately a sixfold. This means even more pillar candles have to be utilised to measure their length. A weaving of this category lasts exactly thirty pillar candles.
Hidden: show
(1800 minutes, 1 hour per caster level = 30 hours)

There are a few select spells that have other longevities, some last for a full cycle, others last for even shorter than the shortest group of weavings. The use of enlenghtening their durations seems rather questionable and therefor was not taken into consideration.
One weaving that comes to mind would be Foresight which has will last even less than a thin candle, can however not be extended due to its already most strenuous nature.

Results:

Experimentation with each of these groups lead to clear results, their durations were always exactly doubled.
Weavings of the first group would reach durations of thirtysix marks on a thin candle still not nearly enough to burn one down entirely.
Hidden: show
(60 rounds, 2 rounds per caster level = 360 seconds or 6 minutes)

Weavings of the second group would last for about an entire pillar candle.
Hidden: show
(60 minutes, 2 minutes per caster level)

The third category of weavings would last for exactly ten pillar candles.
Hidden: show
(600 minutes, 20 minutes per caster level = 600 minutes = 10 hours)

Weavings within the fourth group of weavings would last for an astonishing amount of sixty pillar candles
Hidden: show
(3600 Minutes, 2 hours per caster level = 60 hours)
, admittedly this was only tested once as the outcome of these experimentations had been hitting our expectations very clearly each and every time.

Discussion:

The weavings not surpassing thirtysix marks (6 minutes) on the small candles are clearly profiting largely from the extention of their longevity. It makes them last for a much more satisfying time before having to reapply these wards in dire situations, easing the planning around them.
Their probably most impactful one is the weaving called "haste" which will turn a group of skilled combatants into a much larger thread than already before.

The second group of weavings lasting for an entire pillar candle (60 minutes) also are much more reliably of use extended. Coming to mind is the animal line of weavings, enhancing the target's strength, agility, constitution, mindfulness, intellect or effect on the people surrounding them.

Anoher noteable one the "shadow shield" weaving which grants protection against many a threat specifically spells of the necromantic school.

The weavings that reach a longevity of an enormous ten pillar candles (10 hours) last really long enough to not have to worry about any reapplying of wardings in most scenarios.

One weaving representing this group is "keen" which has a similar effect to a whetstone on a slashing or piercing type of weapon, a very useful tool for when traveling with warrior type of companions.

The weavings that last for sixty pillar candles (60 hours) once extended are in most cases not really profiting from such a procedure, extending them usually is only of a certain worth for mages of a less experienced degree, where weavings tend to wear off much faster than for us more established mages.

One weaving that finds exceptional use in its extention is the weaving which creates greater undead creatures. This has an exactly doubled duration of the first groups of weavings, meaning it will last for sixtyfour marks (12 minutes) granting especially necromancers but also those less dedicated an incredibly fierce creature at their disposal.

Please do tell what you think and if you see need for improvement. I would be very grateful for criticism. Cheers K'yon))

Fragmentation of the Mind

((This one is a bit longer but I had an idea and wanted to breath life into it, I think it worked out nicely in the end, I hope you enjoy. As always I would be happy to receive criticism))

In a dimly lit chamber, somewhere high up in the higher echelons of the School of Necromancy, echelons here both in actual height of the building as well as pertaining ranks within this strictly organised military faction and home to those that sought knowledge about the School of Magic that dealt with the raising of undead servants.

At least it was often considered as the School of Undeath only, a misperception he had fallen to initially as well, before joining their ranks and learning of the many other things, admittedly not only the School of Necromancy in itself had to offer, but also the other more general topics that were taught within the compounds walls.

One astonishing feat had become his own since learning of the manifold of different weavings. It had not manifested itself in the early stages of his studies, however the more complex the weavings had gotten, the more ways he had found to manipulate each and every spell he so eagerly studied. His venture into the lower dark, investigating on the Netherese ruins there, had fueled this thirst for knowledge. Studying even more meticulously ever since, all the weavings he could aquire through whichever paths opened to him, had shaped his mind.

After a long day of a variety of new duties that required his attention, he finally found the time to sit down in solitude. The chair, more of a throne really, in Beldroin's office was not padded. Nonetheless it was quite comfortable, strange considering the hardness of the obsidian used to shape seating surface and backrest. Compared to the stools available to him in the laboratories and his own Chambers, quite the luxury he enjoyed, his hands playfully gliding over the smooth and pleasantly cool a finish.

As he lifted his head, deciding he had been distracted long enough, his gaze met with the large map, showing in detail the patrol routes the school had been strictly following for who knew how long. Some of the routes had been adjusted due to collapses of a few tunnels out of varying reasons but other than that this must have been the routes for felt centuries.

There was records for everything that happened in and around the school walls but he didn't feel like searching through the files, neither did he have the time to waste, slandering between the dusty rows of shelves filled with their well kept records, all cleanly tucked away, catalogued alphabetical and per anno.

Image [A section of the archives storing most of the School's recordings]

Ontop of the map, a heavy leather bound book with few traces of use, it held the register of the School's troops and was usually only touched to cross out the deceased or freshly entered students and enlisted, or to cross those out again, after their timely demise, which was more often the case than not.
Besides this large heavily bound book lay another, much smaller book also bound in leather, it was used a lot more frequently as it contained the different squads, teams, companies and brigades and reorganising these was a nigh daily task so it seemed.
For brief moments he skipped over the large register, memorising names skills of anyone even remotely in question, then his eyes took in the brigands composition and structure.

Lastly he used his body consciously to watch the map, judging the patrol paths. It took some time to analyse the to be covered ground, the allocated ressources to do so in the predetermined manner of teams of four and systematically find flaws. There were areas that were connected, but teams were not patrolling them in such a manner they would make use of these intertwined tunnel systems, there were intervals where one team would patrol parts of an area and another shortly after reducing the effective ground covered. While he was actively thinking of these patterns, his eyes following paths marked in various colours, recognising the vast arrays of areas to be inspected by his troops.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, not far removed really, he still very much realised it happened, it just happened to be an activity that required non of his sensorial capabilities, he was going through the names he had pulled into his brains memory from the large register. Matching their skill sets to create team compositions of optimal diversity or highly specialised for a certain task they might need to accomplish.

Simultaneously also not requiring his body at the very least, besides his synapses that were routing heavy traffic, caused by the manifold of things his brain was processing. He arranged teams adjusted to this other capsuled task, moving their previous patrols in schedules that had not come to existence but in his mind. A sacrifice these females and males would have to make was their free time was now allocated differently, might upset a few, it hit him but the net gain clearly negated any of the minor downsides of his plans.

In this fashion he crafted a completely new system of patrol paths optimised in every which way possible. His hands had barely finished placing the markers on the map, as they began to write up the new team compositions for the hundred-and-thirtyfour members of his brigade and their duty schedules followed only just shortly after.

Since all of it had already, been processed while adjusting the map, his mind already began splitting onto other tasks at hand, well technically not at hand, as those were still occupied with the writing as were his eyes, assisting them in their task, just his thoughts however were already racing to the meeting with the knight captains.

Once this collective of tasks was completed physically, he went well prepared into the meeting with the knight captains, dealing with their scepticism towards this new corset he was pressing their troops in. Chains of arguments lead them to safety in an argumentative kind of sense, only to then completely pull the rug from underneath their feet, figuratively speaking.
The meeting took him a full twelve minutes less than he had calculated, as the complex interplay of his arguments apparently hit less resistance than he had anticipated to be the worst case.

From now on the Defense Battalion's sixth brigade would follow his creation of a patrol system, the High and Master Necromancers would quickly notice his achievements did they, care to look for hints of it by any means.

Should he be asked to adjust the entire School's personnel's schedules and routes, which would altogether amount for close to three-thousand men and women, he would require a lot less time in comparison, thanks to the already discovered patterns at hand.

A smile played around his lips as he stepped out of his provisional office, pleased with his achievements of this cycle and those clearly ahead of him.

A masked half-drow known to some by the name Kaylin or Kay approached the doors of the school of necromancy. She carried two large bags of troglodyte tails with her. Hesitantly she entered the school and approached the necromancer manning the front desk. She requested an audience with Necromancer K'yon. She stated she had the delivery he requested.

Moments later a heavy armoured Enlisted enters the entrance hall and accompanies Kaylin into the office of Necromancer K'yon. Once they have entered K'yon shoos the heavy armoured out, the gesture might seem arrogant but the male apparently holds a high position within the institution.

"So you brought what you owed, very well. Good you came masked, spares me the shame of people whispering about your low descent.
Now drop the bag next to the door and get lost!"

As before with the faceless enlisted he makes the same shooing motion towards Kaylin casually waving her to leave.

He had told Val'lyn a truth. There had been a mage that was able to prolong his life by draining other creatures life essence, of course he had not admitted that it was a lowly human that had achieved this quite astonishing feat. How would it look like to others if he was conducting experiments to try and accomplish what a human had already achieved, possibly millennia before him.

While this was partially true he was not only looking to gain insights on the permanent transfer of life itself to him, but also a general understanding of how to manipulate the very flow of life, understanding the principles of the matter could yield an advance to his creation of a perfect undead.

It felt a bit like grasping at straws, he had looked into Illithid cells and the regenerating cells of a warrior, lately even in the regeneration that was akin to lizard like specimen all to stop the decay of his undead creations.

Some had even pointed him at Vampires, after all they were non-decaying and even regenerating undead creatures. Fools! They did not regenerate they metabolised the blood of their victims to heal their wounds it was an entirely different process and part of their curse.

He wanted something else, something else entirely.
