Laitae's Second Change question

Unread post by whatever123 »

I rather like this spell thematically: https://wiki.bgtscc.net/index.php?title ... ond_Chance. However, the ingame description states that it only works if your characters patron deity is Mystra or if they have the good domain. If I don't have Mystra as the patron deity, does it mean that I must have cleric levels with the good domain or does it work if my patron deity has the good domain (but no cleric levels)?

Also is there some specific lore around that spell? Could a random sorcerer know that spell in the first place?

I would just go and test it but he Djinn can swap spells only once a month, so...

The description says that clerics of mystra or with good domain can cast the spell. Any wizard or sorcerer can cast the spell regardless.

As for lore: My retired character is the one who made it!
She was (is - she retired as a Chosen of Mystra) a true Mystran and thus it was important for her to make the magic accessible to anyone and everyone. It can be found in many places, including Candlekeep and the Temple of Mystra in Baldur's Gate. A random sorcerer could have chosen to learn it by becoming familiar with it.

Running a Cleric here and forgot about the restriction on it. My guy does not follow Mystra nor has either required domain, so what happens is it will just fizzle unless you meet those restrictions as a cleric. But Wizards can use it freely, Sorcs, and likely anyone with enough UMD.

Yep, spell fizzles if FS or cleric PC doesn't worship Mystra or doesn't have Good domain.

Makes sense, somehow I wasn't sure if the restriction also included sorcerers and wizards, but now I'll get it for my sorcerer. Also thank you for the lore info!

Speaking of the spell itself, it's very niche as many evil mobs/players have high will save or mind protection which renders spell pretty much useless.
Keep that in mind when using it.

I don't know - I've had lots of good use with it. Laitae was never much of a battlemage, nor an adventurer, so she didn't get to use it all that much herself, but I've used it on other characters, right now on my cleric. Good effect on most things in the cloud peaks, for example.

Its the most powerful spell. On level 8 for very high DCs, on a save different from all other save-or-die spells (fort). A must have spell for any DC wizard/sorcerer, both because it is very powerful and it helps with spell management

PS there are mobs/players with high fort saves as well. Does that render Finger of death useless? :o

Though, immunity to mind-affecting effects is obtained by lvl 1 spell that stays there forever. Protection from alignments. Deathward or shadowshield are considerable more expensive and there are no items with n/day of it. I may have unwillingly exaggerated that it's useless, but it's not a spell that one can throw left and right and expect it to work always, just same as death magic itself.

Every spell has some kind of counter. From immunity, to very high saves, to mantles. You are thinking about pvp, which is not the case that makes this spell very powerful. There are more straight forward ways to kill someone in pvp using spells.

For PvE, there was nothing close to Laitae's Second chance. The combination of
- there wasnt any level8 save-or-die spell
- there wasnt any save-or-die on will saves spell

is what makes this spell very powerful and as close to OP a spell can get. For example, having a level 7 FoD and a level 8 LSC, gives you flexibility to have 2 high DC spells that cover all situations - something that was not possible before. Use FoD against NPCs with lower Fort saves, LSC for low will and save the Wails for mass murder. More save or die spell availability (levels 7 & 8), on all levels and for almost every situation. Especially for high DC sorcs, FoD and LSC are automatic choices.

My plan is to play and RP my mage to create a similar spell to LSC ( save on will or die ) but with an AoE similar to the Wail. I bet this will go well :violin:
Mendel - Villi of En Dharasha Everae | Nikos Berenicus - Initiate of the Mirari | Efialtes Rodius - Blood Magus | Olaf Garaeif - Dwarven Slayer
