Race : human (Ffolk blood mixed with northmen’s)

Gender * female

Age * 20

Occupation * scout

Classes * base class ranger-hunter +++

Deity * Akadi

Alignment * lawful neutral

Nationality * once dual - Edenvale (plus Konigheim)

Background
Hidden: show
Born in the Utter East, Jana at first had a dual nationality with her father born in Konigheim and her mother in Edenvale. She was raised on the border of both kingdoms, but eventually leaned more towards the monarchy of Edenvale, and she followed her mother’s footsteps as a scout who was a border warden. She got to know both the kingdom and Edenvale Castle rather well, and during an event was recruited to join the kingdom’s armed forces. She was seventeen at the time.
Quickly it became clear her talents lie in the strategic development of the army, more specifically through performing reconnaissance, gathering intelligence, and securing resources. Only rarely she engaged in light combat, mostly to prevent enemy scouts from discovering too much of her kingdom’s army strength.
Jana has been nominated to become part of the Royal Scouts, a very small elite force operating at the utmost and anomalous borders with Konigheim. A group which also attempts to map magical gateways linking Edenvale and Konigheim with places beyond the World Pillar Mountains. This group also takes high interest in the Phantom Pass. These scouts answer to the Queen and the Queen only, and once chosen they are considered to be on par with nobility within their society.
Jana is also a fervent supporter of Queen Rosalind. Operating by the thought “Wind knows the truth before the Court”, Jana’s goal is to become such a good scout that said thought can be reversed.
She however still has a long path to go before earning the famous silver feather clasp. In order to be chosen she must refine her skills and talents, hence a few special training courses outside the kingdom, under all sorts of circumstances. Her first stop, the region of Baldur’s Gate.

At first glance
Hidden: show
Jana is a charming young female and she comes across as a bright appearance. Although such may have something to do with the orange color of her hair, it was more than that. People can quickly learn Jana is drawn to the land, and genuinely enjoys the extensive palette of sighseeings nature has to offer. She is very friendly and looks like a blank slate when it comes to Baldur’s policies and lore. Her outfit is simple, but for those who recognize, she also wears the colors of Edenvale on her.

Current status abilities (without gear)
Hidden: show
Strength 17= Jana is a tad stronger than she looks like, well capable of wielding dual swords, and she can carry a full scouting pack for days. She is by far no brute as her strength is rather a practical wilderness strength.

Dexterity 14 = She has an excellent balance on rough terrain, is a steady archer and quick with physical reactions. She is not an acrobat or a lightning-fast duelist. Her dexterity comes from experience, but not from formal combat training.

Constitution 14 = Jana is tough and rather enduring. She is well able to perform lengthy marches, and enduring cold nights up in the mountains. Exhaustion she can overcome but extreme hardship (serious injuries, desert starvation) will challenge her.

Intelligence 14 = Jana remembers landscapes very well. After walking a road once, she can recall the bends in the trail, the water sources, potential hidden vantage points as well as ambush spots. She tends to learn new things rather fast without being scholarly academic, and picks up languages or unfamiliar dialects fairly okay.

Wisdom 8 = She is still inexperienced when it comes to dealing with ‘life’. Depending on the situation she can be overly trusting, or naive with people. For her it’s hard to read people who seem very confident, and it’s clear her focus is on the land and on facts, not always on motives. Jana may be smart, but sometimes just misjudges certain people.

Charisma 16 = It’s almost as if her real strength is her appearance, this rather natural presence. There seems zero courtly manipulation on her, just this honest magnetism. She may come across as very confident and trustworthy while she carries herself with quiet pride and a warm smile. She may be trusted quickly, and older soldiers may respect her even when she is still so young. And by the looks of it, she doesn't always seem to realize the effect she may have.

Jana's home

Down in the vale, she crouched near the stream, her head canting slightly as she oversaw the crystal clear surface right in front of her.

There!

Her fingers straightened and with a sharp twang the barbed arrow was launched. It was a smooth and consistent release, but also instinctive, aimed about two inch lower than the visual.

The angle proved to be accurate. Quickly she retrieved the pierced trout from the water and headed back home.

The forest around her was filled with chirping birds, their song only now and then interrupted by the soft rustling of leaves caught by the wind.

Right next to her the stream gurgled as she climbed over mossy logs and rock, and ducked under hanging branches. Some people found a walk like this stressful, but to her it brought a sense of peace.

The air was fresh and invigorating with every breath, the aroma of pine and earthy scents filling her nostrils. When she looked up, she marvelled at the colorful canopy filtering the sunlight into dappled golden patterns on the surface below.

Next to her a squirrel with a sudden burst of energy leapt from the ground onto the lower bark of a nearby tree. With masterful agility its tiny body, rapid and jerky, flew halfway up the wooden stem, only to stop midway to reorient itself before disappearing with total confidence into its arboreal habitat.

Her eye caught the smoke from a chimney moments before a structure came into view. A house with a bridge that was literally on the border between Edenvale and Konigheim.

“Mom, dad!? I’m home! With dinner!”

Jana's friend

She listened more carefully as she hid in the underbrush.

There was that sound again!

Something moved with this quiet flat-footed gait, and it moved slow and careful. Like… it was hunting?

The sound faded and all turned quiet again. Just when she was about to pop her head above the brightly colored foliage, a new sound caused her to freeze in the movement. It was a deep, raspy grinding of sorts, accompanied with the creaking of a tree. Up ahead she perceived the location of the sound. Dead leaves twirled down as the tree swayed lightly.

Wood cracked and snapped, and when her gaze shifted lower, she saw the wild animal. A brown bear! And it was rubbing its back into the bark like it had some itch.

It snorted in satisfaction.

She moved a little closer, but stopped and held her breath the moment she saw those small, rounded ears perking up.

The animal looked lazily about before it resumed with the rubbing.

Then, in the distance behind her, she picked up a different sound. Something like… barking?

Hunting dogs!

Oh no, she thought. They’ll find this amazing creature, kill it, and hang its fur up on their walls!

Without overthinking it, she jumped up and produced a high pitched sound that made the bear look over in her direction. Its eyes connected with her for a few moments.

The barking sounded louder now.

And then, faster than one would expect, the bear dashed off in the opposite direction, with an agility that allowed it to navigate through the thick brush and along any obstacles ahead.

The dogs however closed in on her position, so she ran off, headed into the river, and followed it upstream back to her home.

In the days after, she spotted a compact built form more than once in the vicinity of her place. But when her mother wanted to scare it off, she explained how she and the bear ‘met’.

Her mother nodded at her in understanding. “There might be potential bond here. I once had it too, with a bear as well. Until she passed away of age, right after you were born. Be careful however, Jana, let it first approach you rather than the other way around. It’s clear it already tolerates humans, but it remains a wild creature. Unpredictable. Well, until you know each other.”

Jana's first city visit

She looked her eyes out as she was triggered by the rhythmic clatter all about. Not one pair of cart wheels, not two, but dozens at the same time bumped slightly up and down as they followed the irregular, rounded contour of the cobble stones. The drivers on their box seat were in for a loud, vibro-heavy ride.

Hidden: show
Image

Her mother called this an outpost, but to her this was a whole new world. The road towards it was weird though. It was solid, clean, but not very discrete to anyone who didn’t crave attention. Behind high walls and a gate, trees and thickets made way for stone and treated wood. The houses here were all multi-story and packed densely together.

Something smelled. Was that waste on the road? She didn’t even want to investigate. Instead she observed the people at work in various places.

Her mother called them guilds. They were the people responsible for craft and art, while others controlled the trade. Among them she encountered a baker, two shoemakers, a blacksmith and a couple of weavers. She learned most of them had started young, often as teenagers. Their apprenticeship lasted a couple of years after which they could become skilled, paid artisans.

While her mother explained, she sensed her mother’s eyes on her with each profession they passed. And she knew why. So she shook her head.

“I want to be like you, mom. I’d like to become a scout. There is nothing here for me.”

Her gaze however lingered on a man standing with two boys, slightly younger than her. Somehow she was able to distinguish them from the rest of the population. Their clothes, their mannerism, and the fact they were bearers of sword and shield. Wooden, but still. Her mother explained they were pages who were instructed by a squire.

She listened with heightened interest at the story of how a military career looked like, how candidates were educated, and how some of them became knights to serve the ruler.

Her mother sighed when she caught how intrigued her daughter listened.

Jana's first event

It was said the festival would last for several days, but she insisted on going there from day one. The first part they crossed was the market. Her mother lingered too many times and for too long at ‘hundreds’ of stalls. Jana rolled her eyes when her mother also wanted to check out a travelling show. So she pulled at her arm, a strong indication she wanted to head deeper into the crowd.

And then, finally… FI-NAL-LY!

Waves of manes and tails rushed by accompanied with an intense, rumbling sound, and with the ground vibrating under the spectators’ feet as hooves struck hard soil. And again. And again.

She squeezed through the crowd and soon was in for a spectacle that blew her mind. Banners snapped in the wind above a billowing cloud of dust as two heavily armored riders clashed with each other. She pictured a dramatic spray of blood as one knight hit the other full on the metal chest. In reality the armor didn’t gave way, but instead a bell was struck.

“One point for Ser Mattal!”

The crowd all around cheered.

After two more runs and an obvious victory for Ser Mattal, her mother wondered if they could move on. But Jana shook her head.

“I like to stay here, mom. Can I please, can I?”

Her mother sighed and nodded. She told her daughter to stay put as she fetched some drinks for them.

And just when she was gone, a herald stepped up on the battleground before her.

The man shouted with all his might. “As you know, the jousting is a three day event and every hour during the daytime we will have a new duel! In between you shall find here a number of games, trials and other competitions! But first, we would like to introduce our latest..., set up entirely for the youngsters among you! It comprises a survival adventure where you will face a number of challenges, and the top three will receive their price from Rosalind, Favored of the Kingdom!”

Jana's grandmother

The glade where she arrived was grassy and was demarcated with surfaces of limestone bedrock here and there popping from a shallow soil. The parcel was not very large, just enough to be this gleam of reassuring light in the middle of the forest. The largest trees around were mostly a mix of iron oak and winged elm, but the one standing alone in the center of the glade was different. It was a so called evergreen tree, by the looks of it redcedar. The shape was rather strange. Most of the times this type of trees were quite tall, and pretty straight up. But this one had a rather twisted shape, as if it had been bent and grown under environmental stress. It had a few long, downward-cascading branches that curved up halfway their length. Like the tree had made attempts to grow back towards the light.

She made a punctilious and ceremonious entrance, stepping into the light of the glade. The tree appeared quite old to her. And when she started to circle its girth she noticed a table underneath one of the branches. Jana froze in her tracks instantly and looked around. Was she trespassing? Had she missed any signs or fences on her path?

Looking closer it was as if the tree itself emitted light. Rubbish of course as it was just the sun playing with the colors, its beams dappling through the leaves. There was also something reassuring about its presence, and somehow feeling invited she took a seat at the table, her hands resting flat and calm on a rather smooth surface. Sanded, she thought.

She looked around once more. Nothing happened. No one showed up to chase her off.

When her gaze shifted back to the tree she frowned. Was that a face in the bark? Or was this just her brain finding a familiar pattern in a natural object?

Nope, cause the tree smiled.

Jana fell from the bench backwards on her butt.

“Oh child, don’t be scared.” the tree said, its voice calm and serene. There was also something enchanting about it.

She got up, slowly. “Eh… hello…? You are alive?”

The leaves rustled as the tree’s branches creaked. “I suppose you could say every tree is alive. But I know what you mean. Yes, I’m alive. May I know your name, child?”

For lack of better Jana bowed. “My name is Jana Adelheim. I live with my parents a couple of miles back in the forest.” She pointed and then turned back to the tree. “And who are you?”

“Ah… well, in that case… I am your grandmother, dear child.”

And with that Jana learned her grandmother was a druidess who had been very ill, and how the forest had saved her by changing her. Her grandmother told Jana the experience of the transformation and how everything in nature was connected.

“We are also a bridge to other worlds, for those skilled enough.” The tree that was her grandmother concluded. “But may I ask… how did you find this place?”

“Mom never told me anything about my grandparents, but she did sent me this way to look for certain herbs. Hmm… like she knew where I’d end up.”

The tree in front of her creaked. “To learn.”

Jana's first run into

She had travelled back and forth between both kingdoms more than once. After all, she lived on the border. But she did so in a rather calm and peaceful area, the dense forest offering a sort natural border to either country.

Assumption is the mother of any… if not all mistakes. To her however that was something still to experience.

Less than six miles from home she sat crouched in the bush, hiding. Why? Because not far in front her she observed at least three people moving through the vegetation. Why hiding then? That had something to do with the way how they moved. They didn’t sprint or cut down any of the plants, nor did they create any noises. Their outfits appeared crafted from lizard scales and leaves, and their boots involved rabbit fur enabling them to move quietly.

It was the first time she observed real scouts on the terrain. The question was… who were they with? She perceived no colors on them.

Slowly she started falling back the moment she saw one of them heading in her direction. If she had been able to spot them, they’d surely spot her as well. To her the forest always has had the potential to completely absorb any living being, including their tracks and trails. If one was able to merge with the background sound of the forest and avoid things like crusty leaf littering the earth floor… and one would have had the luxury of moving only thirty feet in half an hour…

She couldn’t afford such privilege right now as the distance between them shrank dramatically. Along with her courage.

She had no idea who these people were and what they were up to. Were they pathfinders of a rival country seeking ways to invade another?

The three of them dwelled in a lower part of the forest, not far below her vantage point, and they were in a slightly more open part with a mossy underground, the green blanket completely dampening the sound of their footsteps. So she had only visuals to go with.

Focus Jana, think what you could use.

Hiding between those rocks over there? Too far to make it. What about the shadows over there, between three trees? Would there be even enough space for her body?

That was the moment where she planned to be always vigilant and perceptive on the land all around her, in case of emergencies, and where such information could help with a situation. As from now on.

Assuming she made it out of this situation!

She looked at her feet. The leaves! She could hide under them!

No…no… too much noise. One of them was way too close.

So she decided to stay in her spot, breathing in and out quietly, between the bush, crouching. The two others now followed the other one, until all three of them passed her at less than ten feet away.

Slowly… inch by inch. A little more and they’d be gone.

Her hope crumbled when she sensed something sharp and cold against her neck.

“And you are…?” A hoarse female voice asked. “Get up… slowly…”

Jana raised her hands and slowly got on her feet. “I'm Jana… Jana Adelheim… and I live not very far from here.”

“Hey boys!” The woman behind her pointed at her. “You missed that kid from Sylvie!”

Jana learned these young guys were cadets undergoing assessment in the forest, under the watchful eye of Elke Stromburg, one of the Royal Scouts of Edenvale. It made part of a larger event which also involved scout trainees from other kingdoms.

Strange though.

Her mother and Elke knew each other. So… how come her mother hadn’t informed her about this event?
