A Mercenary Presence through Nashkel

Passing through the city of Nashkel is seen a group of well equipped men and women adorned by the badge of a barren tree resting over crescent moon. Many of the citizens who catch their name refer to them as the Whitewood Vanguard.

The Vanguard could be seen leaving town through the tall wooden gates of the city. Nashkel guards signaled from the towers their reports of recent sightings before the soldiers began their journey to the mountain range. They walked tall towards the mountain pass, the dwarf nearly vanishing in the snow with the exception of the top of his head. The mountain range rumbled with the eruptions of battle. Citizens could see clouds of snow tumbling down the impossibly tall mountain range. As nightfall rolled in the flurries of another storm rolled through Nashkel and the surrounding area.

Image

Soldiers passing through the range spoke of highly of the proficiency of the vanguard as their blades arrows and spells lay to rest troll after troll in the brutal storm. The mercenary company can be seen marching through the forests fighting through the bitter cold, and only leaving behind the lifeless bodies of dozens of trolls and a bloody mess.

Citizens of Nashkel are reassured by the tales of mercenaries marching through the local mountain pass and investigating recent disappearances.

Reports from beyond the Gates of Nashkel

Image

Arriving back at the gates the group of soldiers return from unforgiving mountains riding in on four horses. First to enter through the gates is a captain known as Michael Dunn of the Whitewood Vanguard. While each of the men and women made their way back through Nashkel a story followed them from villagers deep in the mountains.

Image

The villagers spoke about grueling battle between the Whitewood Vanguard and seemingly endless army of hulking trolls. Few could see the bravery as many of them sought shelter under the assault. For those that caught a glimpse, they recalled explosions of fire lighting up the white snow throughout the night. Night bloomed into daytime under the illumination of the spells and explosions as the ground shook. Large boulders were hurled from the surrounding forest, knocking over granaries and killing livestock. The battle bled into morning as some of the townsfolks described the tail end of the battle. The Vanguard stood firm on the snowy hill spearing, shooting, and stabbing the massive trolls. Blood flowed and froze to the battle field, as fires mixed into the crimson morning sunrise. The villagers have stated their gratitude and will never forget the sight of a massive troll turning on the others, breaking them down one by one with a uprooted tree. While repairs will be needed throughout the tenday, not a soul was lost.

Return from Battle: Rumors from the South

In the recent ten days the rumors of trolls have been proven by countless encounters through the south past the gates of Nashkel. In recent reports the trolls were seen walking through the roads connecting Nashkel to vital Amn resources. These disturbing beasts were seen covered in makeshift armor using massive branches and trees to bash and break vital bridges. Local adventurers, mercenaries, and a group known as the White Vanguard were seen taking the lead into the desperate situation.

Hours went by as the trolls beat and pummeled the vital trade networks, until they were matched by the courageous group of locals and outsiders. Spells launched into the air, breaking away in a fury of colors and effect. Arrows and hatches spun and splintered into the backs of the towering viscous beasts. The battle raged on as the soldier's met the brutal resistance with their collective retribution.

Image

As the trolls began to run thin, the soldiers came to face the beasts surrounding the bridge. With the tact of the vanguard and sheer numbers of the militia the monstrosity fell over dropping off the waterfall into the valley below. Reports since account this was the cause of the rivers running red days after. Nashkel guard has asked citizens not to drink from the river until the bodies are cleared.

Image

The good news came at a cost, as several of the militia were seriously wounded against the threats. One of such was a man who went by Konosuba Kiyoshi. The holy many from the far east was seen badly burnt walking through the city holding the body of a man charred beyond recognition. Billows of steam and smoke followed the man as he trudged through the snow towards the Temple of the Guardian. Word traveled the next day that the two of them survived in spite of their heavy damages.

Daybreak in Nashkel

In the morning hours of Nashkel, there is a calm to the falling snow. Reports from the south come back regarding the village of Nyush under siege from the troll menace. Casualties were minimal as most of the city was evacuated before hand. Resulting deaths were reported as one unrelated incident. While structural damage was apparent from the onslaught, citizens were relieved to have a home to return to. As days go by the banner of Amn is raised in the village along with a black flag with a white tree painted across it. The banner of the Whitewood Vanguard is raised in tribute to the soldiers that came at their time of need.

After the conclusion of a meeting with Mayor Ghastkill, several Amnian soldiers can be seen making routine patrols through the mountains. The soldiers built small camps in the wilderness and kill any trolls that make their way towards the city. As the numbers of trolls increase. There is a report of scattered undead walking throughout the region. There are no leads reported yet as to the source of the undeath.

In the Dead of Night

After a brief meeting with the mayor; Mayor Ghastkill signs off on a ledger handing it to an Amnian soldier to his right. Throughout the guards and soldiers are rallied and make their way through the streets towards the Northern Lights inn. Reports of a slaver by the name of Arthur Canos are met with a struggle between mercenaries and Nashkel's elite. Throughout the struggle several soldiers are wounded but no casualties are reported from either side. The clean cut man from Thay is lead out in shackles towards the Nashkel prison. The man could be heard shouting through the streets "I wasnt finished with my glass, do not waste it! It was expensive!" Curses of brutes and barbarians faded off into the distance as the man was brought to his cell.

A Snowy Tenday

Darkened clouds are seen from miles all around the Cloud Peaks, heavy snowfall coming soon after. Settlements and cities close to the mountain range hunker down as visibility falls and the world outside their homes becomes too much to bear. Trade is at a minimum, and even the hostile creatures of the mountains seem to be seeking refuge in their own caverns and shelters.

Almost all city activity comes to a halt as the people await the snowstorm, hoping it doesn’t last long enough to expend their resources. Those attuned with nature sense not wrath, but stillness, the mountains cleansing themselves as winter comes strong. A moment of respite, cold and forced, but respite nonetheless.

((OOC Note: As holidays are upon us, things will be slow/on pause for the next week or so regarding trolls and in general Nashkel, this is a cute way to indicate that. Happy holidays everyone!))

Reports from the Southern Village of Bekkregard

South of Nashkel alarming reports of unrest have unfolded requesting aid from the nearby snowy villages. In the clearing of the storm several rangers report tracks leading towards towering trolls in the distance. The range of size of these trolls varies as much as the spots and patterns across their icy bodies. The falling and shaking of trees has become common place as the trolls have been making their way towards the village. Heavy fortifications have been raised, but further investigations into the matter have come back empty handed. Several of the scouts and rangers have been found dead poisoned by cruel barbed cross bolts. The estimated number of trolls could be in the hundreds but it is difficult to tell. The worst of the winter has yet to approach. Those who flee the city are not likely to survive long in the elements. Strange outsiders have been reported in the village. Not making any trouble, the inns seem packed regardless of the threat.

Reports from the Nashkel Gates

A burning wagon of bodies can be seen rolling up to the gates of Nashkel. Several of the Amnian soldiers come down from the gatehouse to investigate. The later events unfold punctuated by the sounds of screams. The firey bodies of the soldiers stood up howling as the marched to the gates. A battle ensued with the undead against the living. At the end of the morning, several Amnian soldiers took on burns and wounds. Little evidence was left to the cause.

Reports from Bekkreguard

The fortified village of Bekkregaurd stands long outside of Nashkel. Its high stone walls cracked and crumbled in places from the recent attacks as plumes of smoke raise high in the sky from recently extinguished fires. The village lays as a cracked image to its former glory as bodies are carried outside of the city in hastily made pine coffins. Building and reconstruction has begun as a lone Ilmatari woman walks along the grave sites blessing citizen and soldier alike. While the village buildings lay in ruin, the center of the keep remained untouched. Hundreds of citizens were saved, allowing them to return to rebuilding efforts. While the village's hearts rest heavy, few are discontent.

Image

In the morning the town can be seen walking out of the fields following a flower stacked coffin carrying the recently slain mayor. Nearly the entire village was in attendance as the Tormite Mayor was laid to rest. Sister Kessen lead a blessing on the remote mountain ledge as the remaining guards laid the swords of their fallen comrades across the gravesite.

Image

A child is seen amongst the city ruins holding his father's flag. The orphaned boy waves the tattered flag as he walks across the empty ruins. Lone citizens can be seen walking across the city ruins placing flowers at the steaming buildings of their loved ones. The heavy victory is felt across the region as the village makes its slow recovery. One local tavern owner proclaims the Whitewood Vanguard as saviors of his town, regardless of losing his tavern and livelihood. He has stated

"Houses can burn, but so long as we're alive we can fix them. Look forward to the new tavern, I'll name it "One and Dunn". Vanguard always drink for free."

While the city stands a third of the population less, there is no dispute the damage could have been worse. With the devastating casualties and destruction of the merciless trolls, the desolated town will require some time to recover. At the end of the day two banners are unfurled over the stone walls One depicting the heraldry of Torm and the other a black flag with a white tree against a crescent moon.

The Morning After

Returning from the scattered forts in the Amnian mountains, the soldiers of Nashkel return home with their dead and injured. Helmite soldiers line the bodies out lending aid to those that could receive it. The morning sun cast over the snowy town, illuminating the entire region with shades of pinks and orange while the motionless bodies of trolls laid frozen in the sloping vally.

Mayor Ghastkill can be seen walking the Nashkel streets shaking the hands of the tired soldiers. For the first time in months, there was a calm in the Nashkel air. a herald would later come out in the afternoon to address the town. Word has already spread of the diminished wyvern population that used to be abundant in the hills between Beregost and Nashkel. Their numbers dwindled after heavy hunting and, some speculate, migration to warmer areas. This drop in their population saw many adventurers go without a hunting ground they were quite used to.

However, and this may come as good or bad news depending on who you ask, sightings of enourmous ants and even scorpions have been reported by travellers. Likely as the wyverns left, the ants saw fit to burrow up and claim the now emptier land. Warnings then spread, as it sounds like those creatures can be even more aggressive and numerous than the wyverns that inhabited those hills previously.

Image

((OOC: Trying out some spawner changes, should be in place until about 9pm EST of Feb. 22nd. CR is about the same as the wyverns, at least from the testing I did. Let me know if you notice any bugs or weird stuff!

Edit: This isn't the beginning of a big plot or anything like that, so please don't overcrowd the area with lvl 30s! :P))

Clearing The Amnian Mountain Pass

Many have seen the comings and goings of a group of rangers from up and down the mountains on the Nashkel side, word reaches the common folk that they're trying to clear the avalanche that blocked the main trade route in the mountains, already many months ago.

Image

Recently, a camp had been set up close to the mountain pass, and after a few days the notice spreads that the pass had been cleared. Through the diligent work of the Order of the Blackrose, the snow and ice has been melted and/or moved, and trade could now resume as normal.

The news did reach far quite quickly, merchants from both the north and south of the Cloudpeaks began once more loading up their wagons and carts with goods and wares, in preparation and excitement for being back on the mountain road.

In Nashkel, the locals are additionally plagued by spontagneous lightning bolts jumping from rock to rock and wooden log to wooden log. A wooden spoon is said to have begun to crackle menacingly, before creating several large electrical discharges to any and all commoners passing by the Belching Dragon. It seems that every wooden or stone object exposed to direct sunlight causes such deadly bursts of lightning.

The death toll, though relatively small, was nonetheless incredibly quick and sudden. The town is emptied out for an entire day until the violent magic disappears as suddenly as it came.

By the dawn of another day, many locals were seen gawping at the nearby mountains- the Cloud Peaks- muttering curses and prayers to gods in equal measure.

Over five peaks, and their mountainous bases, have vanished overnight.
