It's not so simple as that. They don't have to connect, as in logging in via a game client like we do, to cause stress to the server. The simplest way to describe a DDOS attack is that they're "pinging" the server over and over and over with a massive number of simple feedback requests from different computers. Individually, each of these requests is insignificant, but at such a high volume it's enough to stress the server until it crashes.

ho... those... internet guns I've been earing about some years ago... a plague...

it is a bit strange to have this tho... as someone usually have to trigger it...

might be some frustrated Ex banished players from this server...

what about trying not to broadcast the server IP open... then at least only players could get it... and then that would prevent those frustrated players from being able to attack... neh ?

We may have got it stable again. We'll see shortly.

Unfortunately, the backup was somehow overwritten as well, so the server vault will have been rolled back about 48 hours.

We're very sorry about the time lost.

Let us know if you have any character issues that we fixed for you in the last 48 hours that need to be fixed again.

Yay...stayed up 7 hours before a normal reset...happy days are here again!

except..after i RcR's tonight...my parry seems broken lol...which could be bad for my defensive feats that rely on parry...

edit...i seem to be able to toggle parry again...i dragged the icon down from the skills page NOT the feats page...lets me toggle of/on again

Guys, the module has been unstable for months now.

I realize the last couple of days has everyone worked up about stability and rollbacks, so let me quell some of your concerns:

The module IS going to continue crashing as it has been for months and likely will continue to do so until it's identified what's causing the hang and Ras or Duster figures out a way to solve it.

Since we brought our module back to the stock version that I originally put on the host, it's been down three times:

The first time it lasted 9 hours then reset.
The second time it lasted 2 hours then crashed.
The third time i lasted 5 hours then crashed.

I just want to acknowledge that this is "normal" behavior.

We also still have some DDOS attacks going on here and there intermittently, but I've been able to deal with most of them in less than 15 minutes (and we haven't actually had one in a good 36 hours now -- they're becoming less frequent already, likely as a result of the user realizing it's not causing us much trouble.)

Right now, our average module stability time I'd say is around 3-5 hours at best. Personally, I've suggested that the reset timer be lowered to the 4 hour mark as a result. I realize this is not ideal, but it is better that we acknowledge that our current module simply cannot last longer than this.

Anyway, I just don't want you to all worry that every time there's a bug in the game that it will result in hours of downtime and another rollback. On the other hand, these are just the kind of things that happen when a server has to move on without its admin. Luna did things differently on his host than I do on the new one, and as a result, the system that Duster had come to rely on was not in place for him, and what was in place wasn't configured the same way and as a result some files got crossed over between modules and some other files got deleted altogether, corrupted characters got saved, and we had to basically revert the whole host to its default configuration that I set up. :)

Thanks for your continued patience. I'd love to figure out what's causing the sporadic crashing (the 3-5 hour version, not the 5-minute one) but I don't have any way to do so. We'll have to wait on our devs to get it figured out.

Thank you for the great transparency Endelyon! A sign of great leadership is open communication and the population informed. I know personally, I am appreciative.

And good luck to Duster and Ras! Thanks for all the extremely hard work you're doing!
