Does the caravan just make the trip shorter or something? I'm just trying to find a plausible way for my NG mystran wizard to make it into the UD. He is friendly with dwarves for IC reasons, so that works.
Simply wander through the ogre caves, it is not that long of a journey. Either go on an exploration adventure yourself or with friends, or maybe your character has heard of vast tunnels below and a strange settlement.

Nice try, Drow. You're just trying to lead me into a trap!
Lol jk, but I'm confused. When you are "Ogre caves" do you mean the big ogre fortress, or the actual caves with ogres inside?
In the Troll Claws, not quite sure what it is called precisely. And I can't quite recall where on the map it is either... Someone else can give better directions!
Bregan D'aerthe do escorts for payments! No traps, cuz that's bad for business.

I think the most fun way for you would be to get a guide IC. I have at least one very shady/suspicious character that could get someone there.
Seeing that I usually have incredible amount of trouble bumping into people and instead end up looting, you might as well send me a PM. Could be a fun adventure.

Not the fortress. Beware the chieftain sometimes he spawns and is in the way if you aren't high lvl enough.

If you start from Soubar and go one transition to North, you can then head to Trollclaw Fjord without crossing the bridge. You should arrive on the North-East corner of the Troll Claw Fjord and the Ogre Cave is located slightly South-West from your initial location. There is a blue map marker, you cannot miss it. The Ogre Fortress is directly north and not where you want to go for this purpose.
When you are inside the Ogre cave, you want to reach the big open room in the top left corner, and this is where the Ogre Chieftain appears to spawn most often for me. He usually starts his spellcasting with an Earthquake spell, followed by Gate spell, hence, if you actually run directly to your right along the long corridor, you can easily avoid the whole fight and there is a cavern entrance leading deeper into darkness. If you want to duke it out with the Ogre Chieftain, Water Elemental would be nice for its higher saves, and you will want to focus damage on it ASAP. Otherwise he will start spamming spells and you might die.

Yeah, I know this way seems super easy... but how much IC sense does it make for a mystran NG wizard to take this route? My character openly wears the symbol of Mystra on his person. I don't think the Banites would be too happy about that, but idk. Either way, I'm not above doing it. I was just curious about other, more appropriate paths.
Edit: Thanks for the offer, Neg. I may PM you tomorrow.
Thanks for the directions, SW. As always, appreciate your advice.
Since people are curious how to get to the Upperdark, ya girl YBF has made a super detailed and informative map in Microsoft Paint, just going off of pure memory! I know, I know, no need to thank me for this fabulous work of art.
You want to head out of Soubar and go to the Boareskyr Bridge (or, alternatively, take BG East to the Bugbears then to the Troll Claws transition). From the Troll Claws, you'll want to head Northeast to a map icon that literally just says "cave" from what I recall. Inside, you'll be in the Ogre Cave, on your way to the Upperdark!

Aside from darkhold and the orge cave there are two other ways to get there that dont require good characters from having to make use of evil routes. You can reach the UD from the tunnels under Durlags Tower, (which is a much more difficult trip then the ogre route), or if you happen to be a high lv mage you can teleport there, (which is also very difficult to do).
