Upon return to the Shrine of the Suffering, after news of a horrific scene outside the Blushing Mermaid, a runner is sent around the Lower Districts - spreading word of tainted food, and to avoid all foodstuffs sold by Tarrenfeldt & Sons, the Luskan distributors... and for any feeling the effects of sickness to come by the Shrine or another Temple with all haste.

Sister Carys works alongside the others at the Shrine to tend to those coming in with all due seriousness. She takes it on herself to review the Shrine's foodstuffs, ensuring that if there were any tainted supplies within their storage, that they are singled out and set aside for investigation and disposal. After a visit from Afendaria and Elisia, providing greater clarity, Sister Carys spends much of the night and even into the next morning, preparing medicines and poultices to specifically combat the effects of plague.

After months away from the city of Baldur's Gate, on a self-imposed pilgrimage to find inner peace and understanding, and to deepen his faith in the Broken God, Elduril found his way back into the humble halls of the Shrine of Suffering. After settling back in, he spent some time in prayer within the chapel, asking for Ilmater's continued guidance and to release him from the penance that has prevented him from using his martial skills to defend the Coast and its people.

Knelt before Revered Mother Juna, looked upon from afar by the eyes of Ilmater, Elduril submitted to the will of the Broken God, delivered through the words of His high priestess. Some time passed there as Elduril spoke of what his time of penance had taught him; not just of the lessons learned, but what he planned to do moving forward, which courses of action he might take in the future. Elduril opened his heart to Ilmater and spoke true of his intentions, and when all was said and done, a presence could be felt within the chapel of the Shrine, and the elven warrior rose in absolution with a solemn commitment to live faithfully as a child of Ilmater.

A man strode into the Church of Ilmater, bowing his head graciously to the revered brother and Jeanna on his way in. His feet were swift but measured, gliding over to where the altar rested. Entering, he strode into the middle of the room and looked about, his eyes scanning the corners and ceiling of the area. A shuffle of chain and plate could be heard in the quiet room, the man doing his best not to rouse any of the infirm that rested not too far from him. His golden hair wet with sweat fell over bright azure eyes, his head bowed.

The man placed a hand firmly against the floor. Fingers wide and shoulders tense as a soft murmur of a prayer was given. He waited a moment, frozen in that position, with only the sound of his breathing to accompany the faint sound of soup cooking in the adjacent room.

Like a chorus rising from silence, the room began to fill and rise with positive energy, the hanging threads of the man's hair rising with it. It was subtle, but any who would enter the temple for the next day and open their hearts to it would find that the place was consecrated, the overflowing of positive energies tingling in the air.

Vastan then rose from his knees, bowed his head toward the altar, and strode out of the room. He gave one last tilt of his head before heading out of the temple.

A half-familiar scaly face approaches the Shrine of Suffering's inhabitants, this time draped in a cloak of anxiety. A friend and frequent visitor of one of the priestesses, Carys, and a recent Ilmateri convert herself, she expresses a desire to join the church, seeking a role of guardianship rather than that of priest or paladin. She seemed as sincere as she was nervous, and made plain her relative inexperience within the faith, and consequent desire to learn beyond the surface level.

With her intentions made clear, she excuses herself and leaves them time to deliberate.

A man clad in armor, the symbol of the Triadic Church upon his breast, comes to the Temple of the Enduring One, whereupon he hands a sealed missive to the attendant, told to deliver to a specific priestess. Afterward, he would spend some time in silent prayer within the cloister before heading back into the streets of Baldur's Gate, last seen heading back north.

" Let mercy guide your steps. "
Ilmater, as told in Murder Rended... Mercy Mended... , Saint Merielle Silene, The Living Saint

Quiet in the night, an escort of Ilmatari stopped by Mercy’s Orphanage. At their head walked an armored paladin, bearing the ancient symbol of the Blood-stained Rack of Ilmater. Beside him moved a familiar, veiled sister, her hands gently guiding three little ones to safety. Whispers tell of forsaken children helped along the way, sheltered under the boundless care of Saint Merielle and the unweavering mercy of Ilmater. Others believe they had simply come from the Gate, only to greet the Sister before her return. Whatever the truth, the paladin did not linger; some say he left swiftly, others that he did not leave alone.

The Ilmatari presence wasted no time. As the orphans of Mercy were cradled to sleep, their dreams alight with Damaran tales and gentle hopes, Sister Ashenie moved into the night. She sought the destitute, the weary, and the broken-hearted, offering solace in the dark alleys of Baldur's Gate. Children were dearest to her care, yet none were turned aside. Thus the endeavor was renewed : to endure with the afflicted, to bind the wounded, to comfort the abandoned, and to leave no children in harm's embrace.

It is said the Ilmatari Church has returned her to Baldur’s Gate so that, beneath the living example of Saint Merielle Silene, she might gather the children and the forsaken alike into the quiet embrace of Ilmater’s mercy.

" Please forgive me if my heart grieves as a mother grieves a lost child…’"
Saint Merielle, as told in Murder Rended... Mercy Mended... , Saint Merielle Silene, The Living Saint

Word has reached the city that Mercy’s Orphanage has been blessed with donations. Gold for the children who suffer, toys and blankets made with care. It is even said that a genasi’s flute filled the halls with enchantment for an entire afternoon, and that the children’s laughter could be heard from the streets. They gathered, chanted, and danced, and some even voiced their newfound dreams to become bards or musicians, to make others dance and laugh - or to help them forget their sorrows through the inspirational balm of music. The past, still heavy, never seem to leave young souls, yet they share one of the most disarming gifts : the ability to dream, and to transcend the pain they were subjected to in projection of adulthood, as if it could change it all, and mend all that was hurt.

Not all children of Baldur’s Gate, nor of the Western Heartlands and beyond, have been sheltered beneath the shroud of safety. A shiver runs through the universe when life changes its course, when doom and despair strike the stillborn, the lost, the drowned, tearing a wound open that will never truly heal. To honor their memory, it is said that Sister Ashenie hosts Rites of Remembrance in the Lower Ossuary of the Shrine of Suffering.

Prayers are chanted and entwined with tender memories, as the names of lost and unborn children are whispered to the Powers Who Care. Grieving parents and siblings are invited to find solace, to join their own prayers and remembrances to the rite. At night, the litanies are spoken amid incense of rosewood and angelica, words shrouded in consecration. Supplicant voices beg the Broken God, the Saints, Zaphkiel, and all who care for Life, to hold the children and their souls where resurrection was not possible, or was refused.

Within the Shrine of Suffering, it is said that the help from priests, paladins and faithful of all those who truly care is more than welcome, for the loss of a child is always a heavy burden, and should find an unweavering union of care that transcend the churches differences.

And in the city, word may spread that the children will never be forgotten, nor abandoned to the Abyss, nor surrendered to the dangers that strike, nor to the malevolence that ceaselessly seeks to choke the fragile flame of life.

"As the Hands of the Broken God, let the red cords of life bind us in this endeavor, and make it so that young lives would never be threatened again."

Silian Gein has been seen at the Orphanage with Sister Ashenie , on 12th Eleint 1361 .

They spoke briefly at Dawn in the church .

Later in the afternoon he preformed several cheery songs on his flute , including his "Birds on the Wind" and "Rising Currents" , trying to lighten the day for the children .

The most helpful Elven wizard in all the lands would inform that the former Paladin Althalous Fenwick had been kicked out of the temple, and now continues his life's work at the Friendlier Than Amn Inn, plotting and scheming how to get his hands on a particular sword. But he would likely appreciate a visit.
In a strange twist of irony a letter would arrive from House Divine to the Shrine of the Suffering addressed to Sister Ashenie. The letter would request an audience with Mr. Fenwick on behalf of the Matron. According to recent accounts Mr. Fenwick is currently frequenting the Shrine.

The rumor says that Althalous Fenwick, once Paladin sworn to the Lady of Magic and now excommunicated by the Church of Mystra, has been welcomed to stay for some time within the Shrine of the Suffering, treated for illness, disease and pains. Sister Ashenie spends time offering medicine to the elder man with a daughterly care, nursing him to health with many balms, tretaments and attention. She can sometimes be seen helping him between the chapel, the infirmary and the baths. The watchful Guardian Nathan Goldenmane is also often present, ensuring that the peace and security of the Ilmatari house of healing remains undisturbed and lending his strength to daily service.

" The truly Holy takes on the suffering of others. "
Ilmater, as told in Sacred Teachings of Ilmater

In the Ilmatari Shrine of Baldur's Gate, the rumor tells of a new Suffering undertaken by The Revered Sister of the Faith, Ashenie Darakh. The religious rite of Ilmater consists of a willing penance to take upon herself the suffering that has been inflicted upon others. Rumors tell it may be related to a Blade of Mercy, to recent unrest and tensions, and may not exclude the shadow of the threatening presence of the Abyss over the Western Heartlands. Woven in the complexity of the many torments that were revealed, the enduring path of penance fosters a caring purpose : to heal what has been hurt and mend what has been broken. Little else is disclosed about the Suffering, though no mention of self-harm is ever made. Sister Ashenie does not appear to bear the stigmata of wounds inflicted by her own hand, but ashes trace holy runes of compassion and mercy upon her forehead and her hands, beneath the red cords of devotion. She is said to spend time in reclusive prayer, when Moondark's Heart veils the night, during the darkest hour.

" They were fed, given shelter, and a warm bed.[...] We would grow to love them, and cherish each handful of laughter they gifted us. "
Saint Merielle, as told in Murder Rended... Mercy Mended... , Saint Merielle Silene, The Living Saint

As the autumnal equinox comes to pass, the quiet rains, the cold mists and the falling leaves begin to cover the city in a soft embrace. In the night, the lantern alight in front of the Shrine of the Suffering guides the path of the lost, the weary, the homeless, and the forsaken. Quiet in their endeavors, the Ilmatari are said to reach out to the most vulnerable, to the outcasts, and to the destitute of the city. In the Charity Kitchen, just as in the Shrine, they may find a warm meal, if only for another day to live. Sometimes, words of honor to the benevolence of the Living Saint are praised, for She believed that everyone deserved to be fed with more than gruel. Sister Karin is often praised for her food.

In the Orphanage, children are cared for, and even during the day, young or inexperienced mothers are welcome, so they may find reassurance, and learn some of the basic gestures to keep their baby safe and warm with the help of an Ilmatari. Supplies to help them are freely offered too, and to alleviate any pain they may have, especially as the cold comes. The various shelters of the Ilmatari keep welcoming the less fortunate. The old Pathfinder Hall in Eastway, the Charity Kitchen in The Steeps, the Shrine of the Suffering In Heapside all propose shelter from the cold rains of Marpenoth. Whether for a night, or for longer, care is offered.
It is even said that the Ilmatari have reached the sewers and the prisons, for their mission of healing is bound to touch "all who hurt, no matter who they are", even in the depths of darkness, even in the depths of misery.

The Revered Sister Ashenie has been sometimes seen discussing remedies with Sister Rachel, Sister Jeanna, and the Revered Mother Juna, to prevent the illnesses to come, and attempt to offer solace to those who may contract disease, or slip along the mossy stones of the city, and its outskirts. Lately, their endeavors were also turned towards the abyssal affliction, and, to those who ask, they share their concerns, while still assuring that researches are ongoing and shall be shared soon.

Sister Ashenie and Sister Jeanna have also spent time together discussing eyesight afflictions and the long conducted researches of Sister Jeanna about the healing virtues of bildberries.

In most simple ways, it is said that the Ilmatari try to reach those who might be most vulnerable to the autumnal cold, walking in the steps of Saint Merielle and her wish to offer "Mercy to all, even the least deserved". A note has also been posted near the door of the Shrine for donations and herbs.

Donations & Healing

The Shrine of the Suffering continues a long lasting mission of healing in Baldur's Gate and around the city. For these endeavors, any donation, and any herb is always welcome, as they may help prevent suffering and death upon all those who might be affected by the threats upon the city, or by the cold rains of Autumn.
