Also, that would not resolve the issue of a DDoS attack against the provider. As this whitelist would be on the server-side or one the LAN network side, so traffic would already reach the endpoint to be denied access further.

Without going too deep into the details, since this is an open thread, our host is aware of the issue and has indicated to us that it is an attack.

We don't use the term "attack" loosely here, and tend to let folks know when it's being used inaccurately by someone in this thread (as sometimes crashes and connection problems are just server stability issues, and we have no problem admitting when an update's gone wrong or we're just having some sort of trouble), but attacks on the community are a historical problem that we've suffered on this server for several years (and across multiple hosts).

And while they're not very sophisticated attacks, they are still a headache while they are ongoing because we have to manually mitigate them at present. Our host's protections do work (100% of the time) at blocking all the junk traffic -- but they have the unfortunate side effect of also blocking all of our players.

Because we're able to manually mitigate the attacks, and because the host doesn't suffer issues outside of our server, it is more likely a targeted attack on the server as opposed to an attack on our host writ large.

That being said, I wouldn't give our attacker too much credit, as I don't believe they're especially skilled. Nobody who's really skilled at cyberattacks is going to be wasting time ruffling feathers here: Not when there's a lot of money to be made in either putting those skills to a good cause or to a not-so-good cause elsewhere. But these days you don't have to have any "hacker" abilities to launch one of these attacks. Many websites even allow folks to purchase these "services" right on the open web. No Tor client or Dark Web know-how required. This person's just someone who's upset with the NWN2 community or with this server in particular and is lashing out.

I don't know that hiding our IP here on the forums would necessarily be helpful long-term, as the IP would still be easily accessible at nwnlist.com if we're publishing to the Internet.

That's too bad someone doesn't have very good manners. Well, best of luck filtering. Because you are paying for internet services, and this is disrupting the service you likely have legal recourse. I suppose it would be up to whomever owns the hardware/connection to determine if it is worth going after, even as a deterrent.

Cyber-crime is not cool, kids.

Those attackers should learn "the way" and its teachings of "letting it go"... stop aquirering emotions that do not belong to you... watch it pass by... don't react to it... and let it go the same way it came to you... seek detatchment...

learn to love yourself... only then you can learn to love others... and let the world be in peace...

if you love yourself... and you love people... people will also love you...

stop trying to hate others as you must stop to hate yourself... when you arm others and put energy into it... you most likely emplify this negative energy damaging your own self in the process...

think of all the good things you could do puting this energy into good instead... realise your real potential...

Should be back. Sorry for the delay, I was making some dinner and my normal informants weren't poking me about the downtime!

I want to live in a world where the following suffices:
To whom it may concern:

(1) The vast majority of the people who frequent this community have had no interaction with whomever is doing this ("This Person").

(2) The vast majority of those who have interacted with This Person have treated him or her perfectly nicely.

(3) For those who have caused this person upset, this is undoubtedly annoying. In that sense, good job, This Person.

(4) The brunt of the annoyance is born by people who have done nothing to This Person.

To This Person, perhaps it's time to take a step back, and stop. Determine whether you sleep better at night for doing this. Consider whether there are other things to which you can dedicate your time that will make your life better instead of gratifying a desire for revenge, that a year from now you'll look back on with pride rather than regret.

I sincerely wish happiness for This Person. I've been angry before, and done things that I've regretted. As a result, at this moment, I am not angry, I'm sad: I would like everyone to be happy, and that's the one thing that isn't happening here. Indeed, whatever else this server attack is, it is distinctly uninteresting, unentertaining and unfulfilling for all involved, including This Person.

To the extent that This Person is unhappy, my considered advice is this. Either play this game with us and have fun, or move on, and go do something else that puts a smile on your face for the right reasons. It's a big world, full of interesting things.

Optimistically yours and with best wishes,
Step

I actually just feel pity for the soul who is putting so much energy into the ddos attacks.

Personally I believe that our thoughts and feelings can manifest both positive and negative affects on our bodies. By outputting so much negative energy into something so meaningless as attacking our server, would only be hurting the person themselves. This type of negative energy can manifest in unhealthy well-being, which in turn can lead to dis-ease within the body over prolonged exposure of these negative thoughts and emotions. Dis-ease meaning a lack of ease or harmony within the body. This dis-ease can then potentially manifest itself as disease within the body..

Long story short, we all have 2 choices:
A) think positive, be positive and you will be happier and better off for it.
B) think negative, be negative and your happiness, health and well-being will suffer for it.

Just out of curiosity, would it be possible to track down this w*nker and start legal action? Just to teach him a lesson and give an example, if you know what I mean...

Is it not possible to track these IPs and ban them?

Besides feeding the troll I am not entirely convinced that would help much.

Some countries suffer ISP:s obsessed about refusing to comply with court orders to assist the local authorities in prosecuting lawbreakers, regardless if the matter at hand concerns anything from shoplifting to terrorism.

Eventually the sheer boredom of the act will stay this persons hand, matury might hit as well given enough time.

Edit: as for IP:s, I am unsure on the viability there too given proxy solutions and an internet bursting with services designed to cloak your initial IP address.

Sadly, it is pretty easy to purchase a way to have basically unlimited IP addresses :(
