DEATH'S NIGHTMARE
I've wandered a void, with darkness I find...
To remember only Saltwater's taste comes to mind...
I lay down to rest, but when at last my eyes do close...
A sense of foreboding as the nightmare goes...
To wake at last to a sense of being lost...
And never know the why or the cost...
The Nightmare left in Death's wake...
As I wonder at what Death did take...
~~

THERE WILL BE A RECKONING
The Phoenix has wandered through life
and through death, a solitary one
In a moment forgotten between flame's strife
and ash something stands that can't be undone
But she is not so alone in this moment forlorn
Though nightmares abound, she will be reborn
A moment profound in death's void so deep
Now haunted by something that lingers in sleep
A space of time no longer her own
In a darkness where only fear is renown
Clinging to hope at the end of this tale
For the fire to sweep in its usual gale
That once again, for the reckoning, birthed anew
Trial by fire ...The Phoenix pulls through
A phoenix that neither dies nor is caged
And to those who have tried...wrath has raged
The Phoenix has wandered through life
and through death, a solitary one
In a moment forgotten between flame's strife
and ash something stands that can't be undone

((FOR THE COMING YEAR
(Scarlett can borrow one of my poems for a night...)
Line the halls with Silver and Gold
In with all the new and out with the old
Bright fires burning toward dark sky
The Dead will dance before the sun is high
Remember well all those who came before
When the darkness wanes, sing once more
This the end as all the world sleep sound
An in the end of all know rebirth is found
Take now with joy from the table of plenty
If they ask, T'was your heart that sent ye
To the edges of memory the boundaries thin
Light a candle to call "Beloved spirits, come in!"
This night we celebrate the Summer's End
Tonight we will dance and our hopes we send
To the heavens above, and the earth below
As we sing, we dance, yet another year will go
~~))

DROWNING
Of this the darkness none can fathom
A blinding hate in a deep'ning chasm
A vast and dreary dismal place
Where not but despair greets thy face
And in this valley shadowed and wide
Men will fall to foolish pride
Tread carefully ye who thoughtlessly wander
For cries of the past are lost in the thunder
Looming and furious like some bitter tide
The storm approaches, and we've nowhere to hide

THE CYNIC
For some there is not love... but happy happenstance...
That happens once or twice or thrice or more, on more than chance.
For others love is flourishing, real and sure and true...
For some, one is enough to give them plenty more to do.
And yet I find myself upon a lofty pyre
And hoping I am safe away from love's consuming fire
And who am I to stand in the way of love or lust?
I think it hardly my place to presume in which others trust...
But if I have my way I think the differences would be clear
Unlike this poet, each may know it...and I'll not shed a tear.
One you see is human nature, another of heart and soul...
Often it is quite difficult to see another's sort of goal.
I think it best to be quite plain and keep it to myself.
Some hearts you see are meant to be forever upon a shelf.
~~

LAUGHTER EVER AFTER
Prince Charming's knight did steal his glory
And garner the Queen by the end of the story.
But this I fear is not the end...
For now her honor is his to defend.
This tale is not all of chivalrous love
Of light and dark, battles of gods above
Somewhere there is a beast who has a simple lair
Once held riches of a Paperwork Dragon there
A twist perhaps as the collection gems are hers
And the dragon hoards fewer than he prefers.
This beast a mountain on a desk piled high
A paper cut his weapon in a battle drawing nigh.
Politics, the beast’s best minion keep, him well supplied
Though our heroes do their best to slay him, he hasn't died
Either way it would now seem through trial and endless toil
No workings of Parchment Dragons will our story spoil
Once upon a midnight After...
Night was filled with song and laughter
The stars they danced, trees did sing
Joy on feet now given wing.
Little to stop the cheer on the air
None to argue the smiles there
And so for now we end this tale smiling
Off rides Lance Charming with his Lady Boots beguiling
Somewhere there is now a desk laid bare...
If you think to ask why... You really shouldn't dare.

A WINTER DREAM
Dare I dream of the world or its wonder
To no longer fear the distant thunder
Though now the horizon is decidedly gray
It does scant little to hide the light of the day
To leave behind a shadow's gloom
Is to watch a rose in bloom
~~

STATUES AND GRAVESTONES
Rain careless on weighted shoulders
Falls indifferent to the weight like boulders
A shadow on the horizon distant
Looming darkness of war insistent
Still I watch and see it unfold
Wondering at the world turned unfeeling and cold
~~

OMENS AND PRAYERS
The sun rose high, I sat there shaded
Watched the looming storm gather with eyes Jaded
I wondered if it were the sound of distant thunder
Or merely the result of some terrible blunder
The stillness was stifling, heavy and crushing
But onward to the future we all went rushing
How many silent prayers were offered
For a fate and future much more preferred?
~~

A TAUNT
I find myself with tales to tell
But they lack an ending, as we all know well
The best stories are not on parchment
But in the heart and soul, in life lived adamant
As you see I do yet still live
So the tale to tell is not mine to give
But listen close, and I will weave a rhyme
Perhaps revealing something in good time
Or perhaps my secrets will remain mine
Which really suits this poet just fine

A WORTHY INTERRUPTION
I found myself among dear friends
When that happened or to what ends
Hardly really my place to say
As I found it best my own part to play
Different it was once upon a flame
But from the ashes something new came
Left behind most of the rot
A phoenix new, the past she's forgotten not
So it struck her perhaps by a bit of surprise
When she saw something once familiar in another's eyes
An unexpected sister, Kindred at heart
A surprising turn but a good place to start
For indeed such things are never the end
And even the Phoenix can be glad of a friend

COASTAL PHOENIX
Now the fire slowly dies...
From the ashes of War, Cities will rise...
Hopeful, looking up to the starry skies...
Too many the emotions in their eyes...
Enemies defeated despite their best tries...
They fled from the might of our battle cries...
~~

TRULY AFRAID
Truly afraid that you don't know me
Truly afraid of what you can't see
Truly afraid the lesson learned too late
Truly afraid of a shadowed, dismal fate
Truly afraid of leading you to death cold
Truly afraid I shouldn't have been so bold
Truly afraid I've damned you just for thought
Truly afraid of all the suffering I've wrought
Truly afraid that I'll not escape the past
Truly afraid this gentle peace won't last
Truly afraid you'll see me for what I am
Truly afraid that the only exit will slam
Truly afraid I've forgotten or I've shamed
Truly afraid that I am wounded and maimed
Truly afraid there's nowhere safe to hide
Truly afraid that into this abyss I slide
Truly afraid my fate is not my own
Truly afraid of the fate I may have sown
Truly afraid to burn everything away
Truly afraid from the promise I did stray
Truly afraid I cannot find what I lack
Truly afraid that he will drag me back
Truly afraid of the voice I always hear
Truly afraid that the malice draws too near
Truly afraid that I will stand on my own
Truly afraid I'll be stripped to withered bone
Truly afraid of the nightmare I cannot wake
Truly afraid of the past's curse I can't break
Truly afraid as the hells are drawing nigh
Truly afraid as the gods fall from on high
Truly afraid my ransom can't be paid
Truly afraid of forever being afraid

I THINK… ME TOO
We Walked along between screams, dreams and moonbeams
This nightmarish reality of fairy tale dreams and endings of dear things…
The world wanted to stop and enjoy the night…
To play some music beneath moonlight…

“I think… Me too,” came my cheery reply.

We Played along between screams, dreams and moonbeams
This fairy tale dream-scape away from nightmare endings of dear things…
The world wanted to dance to the unending song…
The revelers sure to do no wrong…

“I think… me too,” I said with smile wry.

We Danced along between screams, dreams and moonbeams
Within our fairy tale, forgetting the nightmares and endings of dear things…
The world fell away leaving you and my heart…
You said you wanted for something to start…

“I think… me too” I answered, a sigh.

I Found myself there between screams, dreams and moonbeams
Reflecting on fairy tales, nightmares and the ending of such dear things…
Across time, somehow the pieces had become complete…
It understood the peace in a measure of defeat…

“I think… me too…” and I didn’t question why.

I stood still between screams, dreams and moonbeams
I remembered nightmares, dreams and the beginning of new dear things…
I couldn’t speak and dared not try, dared not run away…
I wanted reflect what you took the time to say…
“I think… I love you too,” should've said; next time I’ll try.

POET'S PUPPET
A poet once had a puppet, or so that is what I've heard.
She called the puppet Poppet, and it never uttered a word.
The poet and the puppet simply could not agree,
On whether word or hand play was the marvel to see
So this did continue, an argued words for mime,
Until the poet was a puppet, for Poppet's pantomime.
But if you asked of Poppet what a puppet cannot say
The poet would remind you that T'was words which held sway.
For in this life you may find a host of many things…
It's a sharpened tongue that holds power to cut through all the strings.
It is words which wound and maim, words which cut so deep,
And it is words which heal and help, a poet's secret to keep.
~~

SELUNE'S TEARS
Silent star, your secret kept, until no other but the moon has wept…
Until the heavens are all that remain, until our voices ne'er heard again.
When all the world has passed to gray, and nothing o'er our hearts is given sway
Weeping heavens, black as ink, our thoughts fill the space above to the brink
The moon she sighs, her heart's plight: a sister's betrayal in the night
And yet this tragedy we call a lovely thing, as we are unaware the pain we bring.
Poets call to them true and clear, and never the weeping do they hear!
Listen closely, a tear in your eye, and know too well how the heavens cry.
Know some day the secret kept, shall fade with the light where dreamers once slept.
Awake at last to warming dawn, never wondering where the sorrow has gone…
Selfish dreamers in a world gone blind, all too quick to leave the past behind!
Thus it is, they cannot learn from past mistakes as on they turn…
From life to death and light to dark, fools in shadow forgetting the fragile spark.
The tears she cries that all may see, as her heart breaks for a peace that cannot be.
This is the secret our star has kept: Silent tears forever wept.

HOPES AND DREAMS
A silent night to sit and ponder.
Not even the sound of distant thunder…
But is this world so full of woe
That silence is seen as the eternal foe?
Can we not, in the quiet sit,
And enjoy the stillness for a bit..?
Above us now the stars… they dance
And if we listen we may hear the waltz by chance
Of a night that unfolds in gentle grace
Beneath the eyes of a dancer's smiling face.
A day dream beneath moonbeams…
Of a moment that carried more than it seems…
A moment remembered and remembered well.
When the night and hearts did weave a spell…
And there she was, the muse entranced.
In that night two lovers danced…
That once upon a dreaming night
Happy Ever After finally in sight.
Would the daydream only last
Until the night had finally past?
Or would morning bring something new…
A heart of hope, a dream made true?

~~THE SONGS OF THE PHOENIX~~
// These are unique poems, and they share similarities. There is one for each important turning point in Scarlett's life from the death of her sister and forward. The new 'Verses' are added to the bottom. Thank you for reading. //

[The Revenge]
All that was and came before.
Is dead and gone and is no more.
Who I was I am no longer.
That which hasn’t killed me, makes me stronger.
I step away from them all.
Ignore their screams as they all fall.
From ash and flame,
I gladly return them whence they came.
Those that seek to break me,
Are not the ones who make me.
So now, in the hells they rot,
They thought me owned... but I am not.
From the flames I walk.
At the phoenix, they now gawk.
Look long and hard at what you will not touch.
Hold still, die quietly, it won’t hurt much...
~~

[Rising]
All that was and came before
Is dead and gone, and is no more
Who I was I am no longer
Trial has worked to make me stronger
Those who'd seek a way to break
The Phoenix that the fire does make
Shall soon see how foolish they are
Her secret motivations to carry her far
From the ashes she appears
No longer ruled by her fears
A daunting dream none dare to hold
Watching the game now unfold
Standing no matter the cost
Not looking back for what was lost
Angels walk among the flames
Beating devils at their own games
And so the Phoenix waltzes away
A vibrant light in a world of gray
~~

[Re-forged]
All that was and came before
Is dead and gone, and is no more
Who I was, I am no longer
Trial by fire, I have emerged stronger.
Now I find they seek to break
This creature that the past did make
No turning back now, it’s too late by far
To outrun the past, Sister, how wrong we are
I find myself bound by old fears
Nothing ever as it appears
Stubborn will to survive does make me bold
I will not turn back to caged bars meant to hold
Damaged, broken, high was the cost
But the will to live as I wish, never lost
She smiled so sweetly from the flames
This is just another of her cruel games
I will not let dreams fall beyond my reach, away
To ashes she has gone, to ashes she will stay
Unbound but not unscathed, Still free
Re-forged, brand new for the world to see
~~

[Resolution]
All that was and came before
Is dead and gone, and is no more
Who I was, I am no longer
The fire simply makes me stronger
Screaming at the wind until there's nothing more to say
Until I finally see that it was you who walked away
A fortress built of stone in a prison sealed with flame
Find the Crimson Phoenix something they can never tame
And when at last the anger passes swiftly to the night
I somehow find a moment's peace in unexpected light
Surprised to find that I do not dance alone
Dare I think to hope my soul's not so forgone
Nothing left but who I am and who I seek to be
And that is something they can ever take from me
Perhaps it isn't truly so wrong of me to dare
To remember well what it meant to care
Now the time has come to choose
I play a game I dare not think to loose
Now we stand and they will soon fall
And I step from the ashes newest of all
It no longer matters, the times to the flame
So long as I do not forget from whence I came
Soon they will look to what the failed to once behold
This phoenix, ever to rise, before the ashes grow cold
~~

[Surrender]
All that was and came before
Is dead and gone, and is no more
Who I was, I am no longer
The fire simply makes me stronger
Seeking forgiveness no matter what it may take
Resolved to bend instead of break
Unsure now of what might lay ahead
But knowing in my heart that I now make the bed
Finding hope in the strangest places
Seeking friends among a sea of faces
A promise to keep, I’ll not let go
No matter the way the wind may blow
The ashes are scattered, the flame in embers
I am not the creature everyone remembers
Surrender to the fire that burns within
Not rage, but hope and let the process begin
I am the Phoenix of blood and fire
I’ll not be denied the freedom I desire
To no demon, past or present I’ll bow
To better things I will surrender now
The Phoenix rises to something new
Spreads her wings and reaches to the blue
~~

[The Uncaging]
All that was and came before
Is dead and gone, and is no more
Who I was, I am no longer
The fire serves, has made me stronger
I burned away everything that was rot
I walked from the ashes with all that was not
I'm finding now there is much still to learn
And learning now I no longer burn
The things that bound me are no more
The promises made, to be kept like before
I spread my wings, no longer wounded dove
I take to the stars dancing up above
Through trial and friendship something is found
A beauty beyond compare, that will forever astound
I stand amazed that I have come this far
From cold ashes I now reach for your star
I am the phoenix of blood and of fire
I have attained that which I did desire
I have discovered the passing of rage
I have flown finally from my own cage
I soar, now wondering what is next to come
Not forgetting those who each helped some
Never forgetting the Seraphim who guards my heart
Never forgetting the promise made at the start
In ways never imagined I stand free
The Crimson Phoenix, I'll forever be
~~

[Something Beautiful]
All that was and came before
Is dead and gone, and is no more
Who I was, I am no longer
T'is flame-forged dreams, that make me stronger
To burn with light and hope, not hate
To be more than I was in roiling state
Of hurt and anger there can be no more
I must become something better than before
And as a Phoenix of blood and fire
I cannot attain all I desire
Looking to new flame burning bright
Like stars that shimmer on the blackest night
Tiny embers of prayers and of dreams
Was it always so much more than it seems
How could I have let the fires blind me so
To rise from the ashes, I need only let go
From a love so much like a gemstone rare
To a myth of grace and inner beauty fair
And in my wake I leave the past
Walking through flame knowing it won't last
For all the world there is a turning
Ashes cool when the fire's done burning

REVENGE OR REDEMPTION
Still and stark the depth of dreary night
With not even moon or star to bring it light
And over the dreamers, the hells did pass.
Their fleeting dreams like shattered glass
Oh to wake with the dawn so sure and bright
But to outlive this disillusioned dread, this fright
Vengeance a thing fragile and swift
A fleeting and precious sort of gift
No sooner has the heart savored some victory
Than the soul to find it a lacking thing to be.
This a hollow and empty, sullen thing
Is all I fear this fruition will bring
I look to it with anticipation so sure
For without it I find no peace, nothing pure
But what, I wonder will yet fan life’s flames
When even the gods have tired of our mortal games

THE UNICORN AND THE LADY
There was dancing at the close of day
When a magnificent thing happened our way
The music the laughter could never compare
A Myth wished to dance, this the poet does swear
The moon danced high above their heads
When most dreamers asleep in soft beds
Gallant and white came the noble steed
Who shone in the starlight amid spirits freed
An angel did watch from between moonbeams
And the creature of legend faded into dreams
Silent we stood in awe and in wonder
The Unicorn vanished in a calming thunder
Under the moon light, wonder was chanced
Under the gentle night, in the mist ... The Lady Danced.

((The performance for the unicorn came up recently, and I realized that this one was not with the others. I remedied that. The original post is found Here: Subject: There should be Dancing...))
