Hey hey, I was out of the game for 6+ month - haven't kept track of the changes
And Valefort, you're not getting off that easily. Get busy! *cracks whip*

Heh, yeah, pretty weak - epic gate creatures are not even epic (only level 20), hehe.

It is pretty sad... You can buff an ordinary summon to be better than them.
They do have aesthetic value! They need buffed, but...still, for what it's worth, they're intimidating to the innocent. I remember a long while ago I heard stories of balors being summoned and thought it was cool as all get out. One in particular of a friend who used it to block a passage while he killed a couple paladins chasing him, *drools @ epicness*

//Did this ever get improved (epic gate I mean)?
Having never used it, is it 1 casting per day? More than that with a cooldown? The NWN2wiki states that the demon is basically replenished for 40 rounds no matter how many times it dies?
So if you want a summon more as a distraction/meatshield than an overly useful fighter in it's own right, this might be handy vs 'normal' gate, especially if your build has limited use of level 9 spells? Basically don't bother buffing it as it keeps getting re-summoned on death?

Epic Gate has never been modified or improved - to my knowledge.
If your demon dies within the 40 round span, another is summoned. If that one dies, no more are summoned.
You only get one cast per rest. No Cool Down.
I can say that if you take this, it's worth buffing it. It can dish out a lot of damage, especially if buffed. Is it as powerful as other epic spells? Not really. It's good RP flavour though

Vamp feast:
Everyone die and you walk away merrily whistling innocently.
Well, if someone did survive I trust you flicked your wrist a few times more and the rest croaked too.
Epic Gate:
Did you see what I just did?!
I summoned a flaming angel!!
See, me and Deathmolestor there we are homies!
This close!! Oh, look at her brutalize those orcs, haha!
*Brag points*
What do you envision?
Choose accordingly.
Edit:
A character of mine recently came into possession of a dragon knight spell scroll.
Just owning it means a lot to my toon (my precious) and I hope to find an awesome moment for him to use it.
Meanwhile the spell itself is and was pretty meh mechanically.
But who cares about a stinking hellball?
That guy will be riding on a bloody dragon, or at least have a dragon pal.
We arent all tiny dragondruids, you know.
YMMV

Spells need to be evaluated in a context, otherwise people might be led to believe that Ray of Enfeeblement is less powerful than a Lesser Orb because the latter kills a kobold while the former does not, and things like that.
Epic Gate DOES summon an Epic Creature, because of the level adjustment. The spell is fairly good, actually: as good as the player, just like other "regular" epic spells like Damnation and Entropic Husk.
Vampiric Feast is not "an epic spell": it's probably the most powerful feat in the game in the hands of a proper caster.
All this despite the MANY steps taken on BGTSCC to limit its immense power. In vanilla NWN2, it's downright unstoppable.

//So I guess if it's once per rest you can have one summoned almost continuously in a 'rest allowed' area at least as rests are every 5 (or 6?) minutes IG?
Seems to me that Epic Gate is cooler from an RP perspective and more useful from a PvE perspective whereas Vamp feast is a 'get out of jail free' card or a killer spell for PvP?
Assuming you can only cast vamp feast once per rest also?
I guess it's a PvP killer if your spellcasting attribute is maxed and you take spell focus necro etc etc? My chap isn't built that way.

Rest timer is 45 seconds * character level (after level 5), 22 minutes at level 30. You can't have a buffed epic gate summon all the time.
Vampiric feast is indeed 1/day and a killer spell for PvP.
