based on this post I made a tiefling warlock and ran to the FAI claiming I was being chased by peasants with swords and torches, it triggered a nice little player event, for a while then I got nuked by a fellow warlock suddenly. I'm currently being buried near the FAI.scriver wrote:As for what to do with all those warlocks who already exist, I still think the "everyone creates characters called Peasant and goes on witch hunt" idea sounds likes fun

Kudos, then. If more people actually RP'd things out, I don't think we'd have this issue.Raze wrote:At least when people find my character with a skeleton I kill it and try to play it off
See, I'm not talking about punishing evil or making you pay for summoning the undead. I'm talking about staying IC, like you seem to do. But as things are right now, most people just whip out the undead for OOC grinding, without much respect for staying IC. It just seems to be an OOC grinding tool.
So yeah, I'm talking about staying IC, not punishing evil.

I understand then, I haven't really come across many other undead users so I personally haven't met with this issue.Charraj wrote:Kudos, then. I'm just a bit apprehensive about it due to some problems in game from "do-gooders" when it comes to playing an evil character. My experiences haven't been that swell from that side of the spectrum, to say the least.

Blackguards are not necessarily connected to any deity, though. They can get their powers from other evil sources as well.Dogma wrote:If Warlocks were application only, might as well make Paladin and Blackguard app only also. Not only are they a very common dip class, but they also always have huge ties to their deity. If they're not going to roleplay that divine blessing -- and the consequences thereof -- they shouldn't be allowed to take it.

Yeah, I know it's hard to play evil on the surface. I've tried it with a couple PCs, and they all ended up getting executed in one way or another. >_>;Raze wrote:I'm just a bit apprehensive about it due to some problems in game from "do-gooders" when it comes to playing an evil character. Anyways, I think at the heart of it, this thread is pretty much about staying IC. The perception is that a lot of warlock players are not really IC about being warlocks.
But things are complicated by the fact that ICly, the surface is not friendly to evil. So when we talk about staying IC, concerns like yours will come up, since evil is admittedly the underdog on the surface. Which is why I'm glad that one or two evil guilds seem to be rising in power.

Is the stuff in this thread about evil characters having a hard time the reason why paladins don't have detect evil? 'Cause if I had that ? (And it worked to tell me what kind of evil like an unlearned spellcraft check) I would gladly work on that warlock overpopulation problem for you.

Paladins don't have detect evil because it's a shame for RP.
Keep an eye on what a paladin is, surely not someone who works to reduce the warlock overpopulation. That's a warlock killer, and I can understand that a small number of loud paladins RP the class as an evil hunter who received from his deity the mission to blast evil at all costs. It's mostly that loud minority the cause my vote will always be against Detect Evil spell.
Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant is not a paladin.

Re: Make Warlock application only
Voids nailed it. Warlocks probably don't need to be app only, but I think they should be made to nominate a pact type - and if that pact isn't Infernal (which I'm led to believe is BY FAR the most common) then they'd better have a damn good reason why it isn't Infernal. If it IS Infernal, then 99.99% of the time that character is going to have a very bad death and is basically at the mercy of the DM team for it's entire lifespan on the server. Also, signing a pact should immediately make a PC Lawful Evil .... not Chaotic Neutral
As a side note, Joe Blow with 5 ranks in spellcraft, shouldn't have any idea what a warlock is doing, I don't care what his combat log says.

Re: Make Warlock application only
If it's possible from a mechanical point of view to make the warlock class choose between some preexisting "packages", i.e. way they get their powers, similar to the cleric's domains, it would eliminate the need for applications and make things very simple for the DMs too.
It would also commit the player and encourage him to act/play accordingly. I like this idea.
For instance, make players choose between a "pact certain" or "pact insidious" if evil, explain in the feat what it implies, and write up some other choices for those who make fey-pacts etc.
Maybe it could be made so that already existing warlocks would have to chose upon level up. If level 30, a DM just quickly de-level and re-level to activate the feats.
The reason why I suggested an application in another thread was to ensure that the warlock player has a profound understanding on the lore behind the class - just like with the red wizards. Some level of knowledge is simply a necessity when playing classes this esoteric.
Creating a pact with an infernal deity is by far the most prevelant warlock type, which indeed automatically set you to lawful evil, and 90+ percent of these warlock probably meet their demise unexpectedly. We just need to remember that the remaining 10 odd percent is the ones we would see in game.
And why did I suddenly get an urge to play my warlock again?

That said I make two assumptions with warlocks.
#1 their spellcasting is not eloquent like wizards but rather exorcist devil headspin green bile puking eldritch blasts.
#2 I can feel the evil flowing off those blasts like heat from any regular explosion or fire blast.

Yeah you were joking, but you probably don't know how that loud minority of paladins are RPed.
I think they're a problem as well as warlocks, but since I'm pretty always against limitating people's fun and such, I won't say anything further except that maybe a forced tour in the OSR keep will be good to see how some paladins are well RPed.

Re: Make Warlock application only
Accordring to PnP warlocks can shape and form their blasts in any way they want. They could easily disguise a blast as a fireball. Unless your character has a good understanding of the strange magic of a warlock, be that fey, infernal or something else, then he/she wouldnt know the difference. Even with high spellcraft, you would only know that there is something 'off' ... unless you somehow acquired the The knowledge how pacts work, obviously.
