Indeed.
Soloing lv1 as a drow takes quite a while for the obvious reasons (ecl +2).
The safest areas to grind are tombs, varalla's passage and sewers in that order.
buy barkskin potion, the hitpoint backpack, a longsword and whatever bludgeoning weapon you fancy.. and embark on your quest into darkness.
Collect the needed gold to buy the hitpoint headscarf from droin and keep on smashing...
This works for anything including monks and 4 hp wizards btw.

If you can get a pale green ioun stone from DM Xzar's new item pack, that's a further +10 hp equippable at lvl1.
