RPing in some particular areas should be encouraged. Maybe have a 10% increase in RP XP inside inns and guild halls?

Also, to prevent spamming, maybe add a sort of "cooldown" to the RP experience gain. Remove the cap entirely, lower the gain only slightly (if at all), keep the chance of gaining RP XP at what it is now (dependent on how many other characters are around, I think?) and add a sort of cooldown between each gain. Maybe 10-20 seconds. So you gain ~30 RP xp and you can't gain RP XP again for 10 seconds regardless of how many other characters are around you.

How about raising the XP/kill globally but have it decrease in function of the number of kills, so that after a certain number of killed monsters the XP gained is minimal ?

This way it would favor short grinding sessions / adventures.
This.

I feel rewarding more for RP exp would be nice, but I don't think it will change the dynamic of the server, nor will stop the MMO mentality some seem to adopt. Another alternative would be to have the experience output depend on the time spent away from adventuring. The more time spent away from battling monsters, the more experience you obtain from battling said monsters once you do fight them. Logically, over time, the experience you would get from killing monsters goes down which gives legitimate incentives for parties to role-play more, slow down, or make more stops.

These are actual solutions to this problem, while simply increasing RP experience does little to deter MMO mindset.

Here's a suggestion, will probably need some tweaking:

When you grind 10xp, all or some of it, is put into a stacking poll, next time you gain RP XP, you'll have to gain more than what's in your characters poll before your character gain XP from RP.

Poll resets on server reset or daily.

So, if I start a day out with grinding for two hours straight, and accumulate 1.500 XP that way, I'll have a poll of 1.500 action XP.

For me to start gaining RP XP, I'll have to RP until I've gained enough RP XP to exceed my poll of 1.500

Works same way vice versa.

Of course, the numbers might need tweaking. Perhaps it's only half of the action XP or the RP XP that's transferred into the poll. Maybe more, maybe less? Someone cleverer than me can probably tell the numbers :P

... This sounds to me like it will actually discourage RP and encourage more grinding. RP XP shouldn't be harder to get.

Not sure how else to do it, with that limitation. RP XP could and should probably be tweaked however, so that you could gain more RP XP than you do today. Maybe make the award more frequent?

rewarding players for both rp and adventure is appropriate. dungeons and dragons is about adventure and rp, not one or the other. i am against any system that downplays or excludes one or the other

This is my proposal:
Chatscript roleplay XP
-Retained cap for 2 people at 1251
-Increased cap for 3 people to 2501
-Removed cap for 4 people chatting (very little risk of abuse with 4 people involved)

-A d6 die is used to chance awarding RP XP until 800 RP XP is earned
-From 800 on it becomes a d8 die (helps casual players)
-A d6 is also used so long as no grinding XP is tallied for the PC
-RP XP is awarded if you roll a 1

-One minute interval per roleplay XP award, at minimum (exploit fix!)

-Bonus Roleplay XP is d20 + half hit die (with another bonus added if in a bonus marked area)
-Bonus RP XP is only awarded if no grinding XP amount exceeds it
-Grinding XP tally is reduced for every bonus RP XP award
-Does not award bonus RP XP in combat (alternative XP source)

-regular roleplay XP is still awarded at the current level, just not with a bonus

-If RP Bonus XP was earned, grinding XP is reduced by the bonus
-No grinding XP is earned until the RP bonus XP tally is reduced to 0

-Minimum distance for RP XP to trigger is 5 or 15 meters, to the 1st nearest other PC
-Other PC's from the 1st are okay for up to 5 or 15 meters. (the 2nd and 3rd, for capping)
-Maximum distance depends on talking or whispering

-Added area variable which can increase RP XP, for example in taverns
-Adds a random amount between 1 and this variable, with half hit die added.

-Add another variable, which marks an area to not give RP XP
-No roleplay XP is awarded in this area (reccomended: NEXUS)

-TALK channel should now auto use DMFI languages if selected (experimental)
You won't earn RP XP every minute, but the amount you will earn will increase. But this RP XP bonus (only the bonus onto the regular amount) is tallied and deduced from your grinding XP awards. Experience awarded by quests or DM's is not affected.

And then likewise, grinding XP reduces the bonus XP you would be awarded. If your grinding tally is reduced to 0 (offset by the RP bonus XP you would have earned) then you begin earning bonus RP XP again.

The tallies are annulled with every server reset.

So the effect of this is that nothing changes with regard to grinding combat experience gain rates. But it does become possible not to spend your time grinding combat and still earn experience.

I LIKE IT! Now we only need to set the amount of RP xps earned around the FAI campfire to 0

This is the part that worries me from that proposal. You are saying that if I spend a few hours RPing with my guild mates, they all log off and I decide to go level for a bit I will then be punished for all that awesome RP by now not earning xp by killing stuff until I "earn back" all my RP xp?

That seems counter productive if that is the case and is going to make some people RP a LOT less to prevent getting their XP from grinding being hit.

Not all the RP XP, just the RP bonus XP. You would still have earned the RP XP had you gone grinding and then gone chat roleplaying. You just wouldn't have gotten the bonus RP XP. So its only the bonus on top of the regular RP XP which you "pay off".

And you are not punished for grinding. You will still find loot, and you can earn roleplay XP and bonus RP XP if you run into other people. Plus you still get the full amount from DM awards and quests.

Or does that still sound bad?

I seriously don't get the problem people have with the FAI in particular. The haters will keep hating the people staying at the most popular RP hub regardless of where it is.

This still sounds bad, in a few timezones the available RP is minimal because there's simply not a lot of people online, add the fact that people are spread out and that sometimes there's no reason to RP with character X or Y and you're left with next to no possible RP whatsoever. This proposal would be very harmful for these people.

Not to mention the UD ...

Grinding experience gains wouldn't work any differently, so I don't see how the situation changes negatively for the people you are referring to Valefort? Am I missing something??

Rasael, I like the sound of all of that. The numbers seem solid and I don't foresee any problems. But I do have a couple of questions :P

How does the rate at which XP is awarded under the new system (1d6 until a certain limit, and so on) compare to the current system? It seems fairly slow under the rate we have now, so I'd hate to see it slowed down any more.

Secondly, is there any chance of making whispers give RP XP, without needing to activate whisper lock?

I don't see how any of this has any potential to hurt anyone's play style or make it harder for certain players to advance. It rewards and encourages RP, but it doesn't discourage any other play style.
