As everyone else has said, leveling a magi from scratch here is a very difficult thing to do.

On the flipside, it may be in a group's best interest to babysit you at the start, as once you become all powerful, you are quite helpful.

So, help the mage now, reap the benefits later.

That applies to both the magi, and groups in general. Don't dismiss us starting mages!

(Yes, I have one myself.)

The first few lvls can really be a pain and almost made me quite right away, atleast in the UD. I don't really understand why new chars don't start at lvl 2 or 3 but anyway...

For the UD i can't really give any other advice than "hang in there", once you are lvl 3 and above it gets much better.

On the surface just check the graveyard and see if people are on that map. Most of the time they will invite you to a group and the first lvls will go really fast from there.

where do u hunt in UD ?

i found the skeletons tomb, the sewers (my barbarian can't hit worm), and the caves (up center Sshamath, or via the warpgate down near tavern..) but did not found other places.

In the dark forest, it's ~empty but got 2-shoted by a sort of gobelin..

at caves when there is 2 scarabs its very hard even with the barbarian.

Bats in Varalla's Passage => level 2.
Area just north-west of Varalla's Passage => level 3.
Escaped slaves south of Varalla's Passage => level 3
West of Varalla's Passage => level 5
Goblin Caves south of Varalla's Passage (3 areas) => level 10+

From there you should have heard from others IC where to go.

the problkem is my orc is a very very very... intelligent one.. :lol:

he is vanity and love to kill big creatures, but hates worms :))

(he don't like people very much...)

through.. my mage is a good people, not "loyal" at all... but good.

I think Lambert was looking for someone to serve his faern like some sort of slave type... don't know if that would be something you want to rp but it would allow you to interact with people and you have someone who is experienced in the UD.

I'd guess most drows wouldn't care too much about an orc so maybe you think about it... i haven't really met other orcs beside yours yesterday. (i was one of the two drow females you talked to for a bit in S'shamath :P )

I lvled up to lvl 3 in varallas passage and then at the escaped slaves south of it. After that at the displacer beasts west of varallas up to lvl 6-7.

at BG docks district, i'll found logical that some rats.. bats occupy that places... (edit: in sewers !!)

(will be easy XP)

but don't know the story at all.. i know the're evil mages there.

edit: another way, i found not using "power attack mode" (? got 'boxed' fr client..) with the barbarian nor berserk skill, i hit more the bats (same attack "bonus" i guess... that no need much damage).

I've done the low level dance many times, at least on the surface.

The graveyard is the most effective area to grind. As a mage, if you can find a party here, you're in a good spot. The most effective spell to buff yourself with is probably Enlarge Person paired with a sling. One of my gnomes, with 12 base str and dex, is able to kill most things in the area in a single hit this way. Mage armor is also useful, so you're not totally defenseless. Getting a party for the graveyard is usually pretty reliable, although easier to do if you are able to solo it. Eventually someone shows up.

If you're attempting to solo the graveyard, and are a bit too fragile to wade into the thick of it, (which can be dangerous, since I've had as many as like 8 things spawn out of nowhere on me), hang out near to where you enter the area, and chuck bullets over the fence at the undead to have them come to you. They won't spawn beyond the fence. You can also rest for free healing.

If you're unable to do the graveyard, probably the safest place to grind is the Baldur's Gate Docks Warehouse. One of the warehouses is unlocked, and inside is two spawns of rats. They're not dangerous and give a decent amount of exp, especially for level 1s. There is also a chest and crate inside, for loot. It's safe income for even the most feeble of soloers. It doesn't take too long for the rats to respawn, if you want to keep clearing them out.

Things to buy include the Backpack of Heartiness, found at Maltz's shop in BG, which gives some extra HP, which at low levels on a mage is -golden-. You can also get Summon Monster III scrolls at the mage shop in BG East, near Maltz. They summon dire wolves, which you can use to solo the graveyard with a bit of finesse. Healing Kits, also found at Maltz, are the most effective form of healing early on, even without ranks of Heal.

You'll also probably want to buy a Heavy Crossbow and bolts. It's probably the most effective ranged option for a mage at low level. I've seen people buy the magic missile staff, but it strikes me as less effective and way more expensive. Also, a sling and bullets, since Graveyard enemies resist physical damage unless it's blunt type damage. A melee weapon is optional.

I find I usually stick with the Graveyard until I'm 2000 EXP into level 5, mixing it up on occasion depending on the character's abilities and what type of party is available. At that point I do all the quests to get to level 6.

Oddly enough I have avoided the graveyard on every character I have leveled on the surface. I typically grind out the first level in the bandit cave/wolves north of the city then do all the quests to get to level 3 quickly. After that I head straight for the kobold ruins and stay there as long as I can. I have never leveled a class that was primarily a caster though. If you can find a higher level passing through and RP a bit you can sometimes get some of the more difficult quests done with their help and gain an extra level or two right off the bat.

i also want to get down.

i dont want to know what makes people nor what people makes...

i'm almost an explorer, an adventurer (i would like to say..). maybe my mind tell me to be strong even i'm weak.

Not used the enlarge + "gourdin" to hit yet..

I bought the "BE little" (rapetississement) spell (mage, not invoker, nor scroll user or less..)
maybe it gives a bonus too.

Enlarge is basically a damage buff, and you lose a point of AC. Or was it 2...

Reduce Person is great for a dex based attack, reduces your carry load by one size level though... but don't be encumbered.

I play casters exclusively... and they HURT to play until about level 4 or 5, then they are ok. You get your level 3 spells and slots and things tend to be less painful.

Everyone has given out great tips, and I would advise you to pay heed to their advice and wisdom.

You may die a lot getting up to level 5, but you have to run... buy and use potions (healing kits are way better, but are heavy) and most of all, patience.

Also, your build matters a lot if you want to solo or whatnot. And as a whole, you have to know where you are going ,because even with RCR, starting over sucks.

Good luck!
