Yes, very true.
However, Sun Tzu meant for one to make the enemies just throw down their weapons in fear, or feel the hopelessness of facing him...
That isn't exactly peaceful.

that's fair, Sun Tzu might have been talking about military stategy ... but I still find some of his ideas useful in other ways...

so if facing Sun Tzu, maybe don't fight on his terms?

Unfortunately Mac, this is something you encounter now and then in this game, and as you can see here, others have similar experiences. I have never had anyone approach me directly regarding myself but I do hear about it in a roundabout way, just as you. However, I never tell people when I do not enjoy their RP - but on the other hand,
I know it is not the player but the character. Some people are not as confident and I am not so sure a "hey no offence but I am not enjoying this RP" would go down well. But I try my best to not badmouth someone, which is something I feel often happens - the player gets badmouthed when there is someone who does not like their RP.
People have different tastes when it comes to RP; different styles. I have encountered alts played by the same person, some who I like the RP of and others less so. Hating on the player is just silly. I have also been questioned by some people when RPing with someone in a sense of "why do you RP with this character? I do not like the player/ their character." Well, tough. Cause I am the one RPing my character, please mind your own business - am capable of deciding for myself who I wish to or do not wish to RP with, thank you very much.
Then there are those who question the RP choices one has made, without knowing the RP history. Often people have thought my character's line of RP has been OOC motivated or in other ways OOC but honestly, people who say such things have not been present for the entirety of the character's journey and I find it odd that they profess themselves to be an expert on -my- RP.

It's so very true. And OOC communication is paramount.
I've had someone RP something I wasn't enjoying, due to serious situations OOC that were reflected in the rp at the time. I expressed to this person "Can we please not RP this. I can't deal with this OOCly and this is why" and even gave the person a very personal, at length explanation of what happened and why it was affecting me.. and do you know what that person said in response? They called me a liar. Said I was trying to influence the RP.. clearly, by making up something horrible that happened OOCly and then sharing that horrible made up thing.. Really?
People should understand this is a game.. that if someone isn't having fun, they should have the ability to express that to another, and to not have the other make issue out of it. If both in a situation aren't having fun, the game stops being worth playing for the one that isn't..
OOC, we should all work together to insure everyone is enjoying the game. Not just ourselves. Not just our friends, but all.. on all sides of the RP alignments and guilds and so on.
That's all I've got...
Happy gaming!

While the sentiment in your post is most definitely true, Mac, and it should be common sense, there are some players who really are like their characters. Who pour too much of themselves into their characters and fail to separate themselves from it. And thus while it is an unfortunate and sad state, it shouldn't really come as a surprise to people that the ones who can't separate themselves from their characters will also be unable to separate other players from their characters.

This is very well put. Many people new to the server I think struggle with realistic RPing.
So did I. At first I felt most of my alts were flat or copies of each other. I needed help, so I went searching for it.
How? I asked players around me whose RP I enjoyed. How can I improve my RP? The answer is obvious now, but at the time I needed someone to write it on a stick and hit me with it

PS Thank you soo much to everyone that helped me starting out. Many of you I RP with still, and I hope I'm improving
The Answer:
1. Play very different toons, pick opposite ends of the spectrum and try to make it work for you.
2. Play the good guy, play the bad guy. Play the crazy guy...we all know who you are. (points at Teris, remembering early interactions in the first kobold ruins)I was so baffled by it at first. *Respect, lots of it*
3. Do your best to make it as real for you IG as you can.
4. Use the forums to practice, writing out your characters intentions and seeing them is very different than doing so IG and helps you with immersion.
5. Remember your toon is just a mask while IG.
This being said, if you've done this there is no conceivable way you should be getting offended OOCly by someone's RP IG. Get offended ICly and RP it ! Enjoy it, close the game and move on.

I for one have always appreciated your ICness on my various characters, but then as a noob to the server they also aren't really involved in anything to get hurt over. Now that Nis is almost in her 20s I plan to amp up her RP a bit more. In any case I've never felt oocly put off because of your IC actions.

I have had this happen to my druid before...I bumped into a warlock once or twice who didn't really care to hide the fact. Some confrontations happened. Unfortunately said person wanted to grind and ignore others more so I just avoided that area /shrug. He/she let me know OOC that he didn't appreciate it thats for sure!

This situation should be screen shot / sent to DMs. This is still an rp server and known warlocks have rp ramifications. If the player was just wanting to grind that's fine, but he shouldn't be complaining to you for daring to rp against his actions.

It has been over a year or so..frankly I don't remember all the details. Such encounter ended in a pvp matter and nothing went further but it wasn't really a problem I guess. I am not against pvp but I prefer good rp instead of pvp. If pvp comes from said good rp then that is fine and dandy for me. I have had some great encounters with people! Even if they are more rare when you do have those good rp encounters they definitely are worth every minute!

playing mostly in the UD its impossible to avoid hostile characters. There aren't that many of us down there but I've almost always had great experiences when someone dislikes my character or says something horribly rude while in passing. People are usually awesome and go out of their way to make sure the other player didn't take personal offense.
sometimes even sending an OOC sending message thanking for the RP and straight up making sure the RP was fine with the other. Over time you get to know the players and don't need to reassure each other, but it might be a good idea to do this if you have never seen the player name before. Imagine being a first time RPer and the first PC you bump into you spits at you, turns and walks the other way. or something much worse. Just something to think about
PS Be as rude as you want if you see me in game!, I wont take offense. . but my PC might

I am exactly who I play.
All my characters possess traits that I have OOC. They have just all been bumped up 10-100x. Alistair is extremely selfish, Eliphas is manipulative, Lika was overly curious, Elessar was stoic on the outside, emotional on the inside, Katiara was uncompromising and business-first. And a lot of other characters. They all have something of me in them, which makes them easy for me to play without it feeling like playing myself.
