DnD is always a better experience when players didn't get to read the DM handbook and monster manual, isn't it.

My question wasn't strictly if there were "Shadow Adepts" outside of Sharrans, but whether any non-Sharran PC's (and/or I guess NPCs) on this server that have ever learned of the -existence- of the Shadow Weave.

My old DM in pen-and-paper subscribed to this belief. However, we the players did not agree.

If that's true, it implies Mystra knows about the Shadow Weave, which implies that plenty of Mystrans might know of it as well, which in turn makes the whole thing an ill-kept secret. So is that true?
It is.

I would expect that it has less to do with Mystra intentionally cutting them off, and more that the Shadow Weave itself traps its users in it. Shar doesn't want people going back to Mystra. Mystra doesn't know that her users have gone to the Shadow Weave, and so probably doesn't know that they can no longer access the original Weave.
That is actually a much better interpretation. Makes much more sense.

Well, then still yes, as the character I am referring too technically learned of the existence of the shadow weave before he became a shadow adept. However the caveat in that instance was that the backstory was involving him becoming a shadow adept. Had he not been applying for the class, I do not think any such knowledge would have been granted, but I could be mistaken.

I imagine that most character who become shadow adepts learn of the shadow weave in some form before taking levels of the class. But taking the class comes with the caveat that if you tell anyone you lose all those levels, and so the DM team granting that toon information is balanced by that caveat. Therefore I imagine most people who take it plan on taking SA from lvl 1.

I have only heard of one instance where I was told someone who did not plan to take SA ended up taking it for RP reasons. This isn't as reliable as the information I presented above, as I cannot confirm it in any way, but it stands to reason this person learned of Shar's weave ICly before ever even considering taking SA OOC.

Edit: Just for the record, I am not advocating carte blanche knowledge of the Shadow Weave without DM approval. Both the characters I mention above were, as far as I know (which is 100% certain in one case), granted knowledge of the Shadow Weave with DM approval.
