"Focal" guilds no longer receive guaranteed DM/plot support anyway (and haven't in fact, at least since I've played here), so it really is just a relic of yesteryear. It might be too much work to consolidate them back into one section.Flasmix wrote:I still do not understand why have a Focal and Non-Focal Guild section. Re: Rant for a True Role Play Experience.
So basically, you want more lore based stuff yet you want less support for lore based guilds, and more support for whatever people pull out of their ass this month and pretend it's a deep and involving guild concept? That doesn't make much sense. Could you go a bit more into detail about this great lore appropriate stuff you'd like to see? Is it like someone RPing to be a half-lich even though no such thing exists in any kind of lore? Or more like someone RPing a character with a description of a drider around the friendly arm inn on a server where drider as a player race is not available?

Already clarified my mistakes in such, in an earlier post as well as those you just so happend to point out. That's my fault for doing such and i will claim that it WAS my mistakes and lack of reading the rules of the server fully.

Keep in mind I agree with kkrazlite's points that RP should be the focus of things, and that people SHOULD make an effort to create immersive and fun RP for the people they're playing with. I just don't think it's constructive to call out specific examples and name names like he did. Conversely, there's no point to call out the OP for his own RP either.
If people would learn to approach these type of issues in a way that feels encouraging instead of shaming, you might actually get someone to change their mind once in a while or teach something new instead of ending up with "RECURRING THREAD #3843: The dynamic of Good vs Evil."
A touch of understanding and diplomacy can go a long way.

Re: Rant for a True Role Play Experience.
To be blunt with you it is a time and energy thing. Every choice i offer a group implies 50 more. If you want the Pnp experience you crave then it actually reduces my workload since i no longer have to mind if the players actually win or lose. In fact the plot can collapse entirely and the server has consequences as a result.
As a serious question - is that kind of long duration heavily player driven consequences role play what you are after? If so, be prepared to lose. All the time.
This is just my humble opinion as an ADM and obviously represents only my own. In fact that would be my preferred style of role playing as a DM.

Re: Rant for a True Role Play Experience.
An incredibly sound point. My own admission is that when I came here (omg... was that... 8 years ago!?) I was not from a strong RP background at all. I knew very little of the lore. It was through the encouragement/guidance of the people I interacted with in game and on the boards that encouraged me to look way deeper into the types of characters that would exist on the server, instead of the Kaze no Kama sort of background I came from.Endelyon wrote:Keep in mind I agree with kkrazlite's points that RP should be the focus of things, and that people SHOULD make an effort to create immersive and fun RP for the people they're playing with. It resulted in far less stormlord powerbuild (pre-nerf) and far more halberd-wielding halfling skald-of-sorts "Paws," the wayward scamp Mitts Daygerford, and hopefully this new Wild Elf wilderness stalker I am working on.
I cannot stress enough that the development of any of my characters goes back to that original encouragement and guidance from the awesome folks of this server.

Maybe trying to join one of those established guilds would be a solution to your problems. I mean, this isn't a new complaint mind you, people complain regularly about established guilds over and over again. I can bet anything that a large majority of people who complain about established guilds, especially lore based guilds, didn't even attempt to inquire about such guilds properly, let alone try to join one of them. I have had access to the Zhentarim account for around three years now, you wanna know how many inquiries I have seen about what kind of character would be appropriate for the guild? 5, maybe 10 at the most. You wanna know how many guild applications with characters which have absolutely no place on Faerun let alone in the Zhentarim I have seen? Way too many.kkrazlite wrote:Already clarified my mistakes in such, in an earlier post as well as those you just so happend to point out. As an alternative there's this:

I know that you are likely not saying this, but I do feel the need to point out that losing for the sake of losing is just as bad as allowing the PC's to win for the sake of sparing their feelings. No, actually, it's worse, because it means going out of your way to make them lose just because.DM Galatea wrote: As a serious question - is that kind of long duration heavily player driven consequences role play what you are after? Consequences and losses when appropriate by the RP which transpires is a different matter.

Personally I am concern that any DM would have that sort of attitude and stance. "You will lose.."Thids wrote:I know that you are likely not saying this, but I do feel the need to point out that losing for the sake of losing is just as bad as allowing the PC's to win for the sake of sparing their feelings. Is there some Perma-death here that I haven't read about? The battle isn't suppose to be against the DM but against the world the players are in and having personally DMed many of different sessions in D&D and other RPG's I know how hard it is to differentiate the two at times but it is required of a DM to remain objective and non-emotional (as possible)
Peace!

Re: Rant for a True Role Play Experience.
Bearing in mind, Gala said -prepare- to lose. Not, you will lose. Some people are not prepared to lose. Some people kick and scream and whine and moan and complain when they lose. Those are the kinds of people who are not suited towards this kind of RP (RP which involves consequences that could be directed towards them i.e. consequences for one's actions). And make no mistake, this kind of player -does- exist here (I'm sure at least one exists on RP servers).
You need to be ready to lose, and to win. Imo, this could be better phrased. Rather, instead of focusing on constantly winning (or losing. Hey, masochists!) one should be focused on the journey, that is, the RP. And if one loses, they should take their losses in stride (they are part of the game as much as winning is) instead of sobbing about it.
There is permadeath here, yes. Though, it is exceedingly lenient. It works as a "warning" system (3 ticks, and you are dead). Its usually exercised in events which involve executions of PCs for crimes, and such.

Re: Rant for a True Role Play Experience.
What Galatea is implying may not necessarily be a "DM vs. Player" mentality, but that if players wish for "long duration heavily player driven consequences", then they should be ready to accept losses as part and parcel of the roleplay as much as the wins. Everybody likes to win, and winning is a great feeling, but sometimes your character(s) just cannot cut it, and not for lack of trying, and there is no "reload" function to go back before the event and play things out differently as you would in a standalone RPG.
It does rely on good faith that the DM is not deliberately making you lose for the sake of losing, and I understand that previously burned players may have a difficult time accepting that faith (and I speak from firsthand experience on this matter). But if you wish for the immersive RP that people write appreciation threads and stories about, then be prepared for failure as much as victory, as failures shape characters and plots as much as victories.
