If you play on the surface this is what I try to do when getting started.

1) Buy the back pack of the hearty that gives you +5 hps.
2) buy a sling. Mace is optional. Most low level gear is sold out side the gates in a field near the grave yard.
3) Kill undead in the grave yard till level 2 or 2 1/2. Up to 3 if you have the stomach for it :).
4) then do all the city quests. Make sure you even get the ones to high level to do now as you never know if your find a helpful person that can get you places.

5) this should put you close to or at level 4. Ideally your want a party and travel to the Ruins just on the other side of Wyrms crossing bridge. Stay on the first level for now. If you can't find a group try it out and go slowly, AC is your friend if alone at this point.
6) You can stick there till 5ish to go deeper with a group, or 6 if alone to see levels 2 and 3. All depends on AC and other factors. Look out as level 2 in the ruins have magic missiles firing Imps that can hurt after awhile.

7) After that stick around there or head other places at that point, and explore as you see fit. Plus don't forget running is always an option if you find your self over your head. Even more so when no one is around to see it lol.
8) As you know in all games finding a group helps a ton, and BG players are very nice and helpful.

9) Above all have fun!
10) Also as well, above all have fun!!! :D

My log on is Keldri. I'll do my best to help out with what ever I can, I like helping folk.
PS: I know nothing about the Underdark here... but I know some people who do ;)

Welcome to the server! I play mainly in the Underdark and its great fun. I kindof like the fact that I get lost and don't know my way around when I'm on the surface.

Here is a handy post to help you get started if you plan on staying in the Underdark. If you still havent been given a tour and you see me log in (nwn2 login name is DreWalker) dont be shy. depending on which of my characters you might bump into could change the.. costs of a tour :p

edit: Oh also I think there is a few other guilds that aren't in the beginners guide, Like Qu'ellar Devlin, but dont worry about them... actually maybe you should worry about them or you may end up taking a nap on an alter

Surface or UD, you see Lux, you RUN! ( just a friendly piece of advice . . . the rest of the community is really nice and helpful though! )
Don't run. You'll only die tired.

I'd recommend finding a group whenever you can; if you're a wizard, find a meat shield to protect you. Fighter, find a caster to heal/buff. Cleric, just murderdeathkill things because you are a god.

Also don't explore very far, the XP penalty has taken more XP from me total than I currently have, probably.

Starting off as a Wizard was difficult! Also Hello Lux! I am not ready for the Altar yet. I have many loose ends to tie up! 8-)

Best lv progression is: Graveyard to lv 3-4, kobolds to lv 5, east cloakwood to lv 6, bears to lv 8-10, orcs and gnolls to lv 12, xvarts to lv 15-16, then giants all the way up to lv 20. After that you can start hitting the epic lv areas such as the ogres or the yaunti. Don't try the xvarts or giants alone however unless you have well over 45 ac, lower then that and you will prob go down as the xvarts love to swarm in large numbers and the giants just hit really hard.

Welcome! If you go 2 hander tank build stop by sorcerous sundries to pick up some potions of barkskin and mage armor after doing some quests and looting the bandits, potions of shield are nice too, but shorter duration and cost more. Mage armor and barkskin gives a total of +7AC for a decent amount of time (10 min for mage armor, 15 for barkskin IIRC). That extra ac will pay for itself when looting the ruins south of BG mentioned in another post and as you level staying alive is way more important than gold! Good luck!

I'm a fan of the cloakwood mines with an AC in the 29+ range (if soloing). Until level 15. They spawn in good numbers like the Xvarts making up for any lower exp/per kill, and good loot amount, plus two quest there. Note: failing the tumble check to swing across for the egg hurts if you fall.

Dwarves get a +100 bonus to awesomeness saving throws thus they are awesome for first characters.

That's undisputable truth *nods sagely* it's been studied by like scientists and stuff, and Max is like way smart! :D
The study might have shown that the classic Stoic/levelheaded types are best I hear.

PS: Duergar are NOT Dwarves, according to Revenark.
