People using modern words, like 'dude' or 'chill' or whatnot in game.

Both, for me, are like nails on a chalkboard and completely break immersion.

What breaks it and what helps it?
Do you have any tricks that restores it, if it breaks?
Are you mindful of others' immersion?

I find just random rp enjoyable, and grinding takes away so much from character development. Personally I prefer to get to know my potential allies, and enemies.

Unen is a direct reflection of his experiences within S'shamath, and I often get immersed with those around me as long as it isn't OOC breaking with questions said in local chat. Also the effort which the others put into the rp as well. I love it when the other players manage to create a atmosphere of interaction. They react, and play their characters.

Though what I really find that breaks it for me honestly is power builds as Unen currently is a pure Wizard. Everyone seems to have HIPS. (People are entitled to their own play styles though. I have ventured to just about every portion of the Underdark, and I get bored easily with killing the same creatures over, and over again.

I would also like to say I participated in some very interesting RP inside the crypt west of S'shamath last night with Vierdra, and Nivor. Where DM Sword stepped in, and made things very interesting! He forced Unen to protect the two in the Crypt as we rp'd, and Nivor arrogantly refusing Unen's help to get them to safety. (Although I did almost kill Vierdra with a fire ball. My bad! )

Have you never read Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast? That Guide directly and completely described an opposite world than what you're identifying!

Toward the OP, I stopped seeking "immersion" years ago, on BGTSCC, and focused my enjoyment within this Game to aspects of consequence, and storytelling, and to what extent I can have an experience of IC choice/consequence per my particular Character, and, what kind of storyline I can build—and with others—to be open and sharing on the Server.

So immersion is a term that, for me, values the role-play in one way that I find just too damn impossible to realize on BGTSCC. And sometimes, far too subjective to be actually interesting or enjoyable for others. It is a Game, not theater, and as many are not aspiring actors, nor even writers, nor even creative, immersion can really fall flat.

But if one can replace immersion with gameplay, what disturbs my personal gameplay most are two things: great disregard for the Lore of the Sword Coast and the Forgotten Realms, and that 99% of the time, storylines are "solved" by the cheap/broken mechanics inherent in the Game (the NWN2 engine), instead of the RP players bring to their PCs, and/or with or against the RP of NPCs.

If Players could experience the game world as relevant to their Character as it gains experience over time—a direct world experience that stays within-the-reference-of-their-current-mechanical-level—, like D&D modules, and that RP was plausible to this gaining experience, then, I think immersion would be something to revisit.

Oh, and yeah...the killing of dragons everyday but Sunday. That just breaks the gameplay every time....
