Once again: a difference between creating a joke character, and, having a character that provides humorous role-play.
I interpreted the OP to be: a) joke RP as in a joke character as in
no reason to pay any attention to it; worthless; intentionally non-serious. b) annoying RP as in made-to-annoy-others-on-purpose-cause-I-the-Player-enjoy-annoying-others (for my own shits and giggles).
If I interpreted the OP wrongly, then yeah, a Character
can, like in real life, be of both humorous and serious factors, or, simply a laugh factor, if that is the case.
Though, I would argue, the town drunk usually isn't funny, it is sad. And, the town idiot probably more so. Unless you have zero compassion. Or, are Canadian!!
/// See laugh factor above.

I don't agree with this. As long as the characters have a 'real' feel to them.
Oh, what you say is possible. But from what I encountered, the credibility just wasn't there most of the time.

Only a DM ought to be RPing a mad, tyrannical gnomish character named 'Tiax'.

Ah, more facts are revealed.
I have to agree with Steve's last post. Having a character that provides humorous roleplay is good, but this seems to be beyond this - putting IC stuff in your bio pretty much confirms that.
It's also pretty unoriginal. Personally I never found Tiax funny anyway.

Some people enjoy RP more inclined towards comedy but others do not. I think when playing these more jokey type of characters, a player should be able to feel the situation. There have been times a jokey type of character has been outright disruptive to RP, especially when they ignore the RP of others. I dislike when these jokey characters show up to player/DM events with seemingly
the sole intention of disrupting them. When I have, as a player spent time to prepare a player event for numerous others, the last thing I want is a jokey character disrupting it for everyone present. Respect for fellow roleplayers goes a long way.
A few tips for anyone liking to play comedy characters but do not want to annoy others on an
- If you show up to events, it is hopefully with others who share the type of humour and you can all laugh together.
- If not, do not try to take the center stage constantly. If there are a dozen or more people on a map, someone's constant stream of 'clever' jokes can get tiresome fast. Try for fewer such but with more impact.
- Try to steer away from more immature RP. People making new characters just to boo at Open Stage Nights are not that imaginative and least of all, not so fun. Witty (negative even) remarks, can however be hilarious. A constant non-stop stream though? Keep it to short and sweet.
- Please allow others time to react to actions. A long emote of setting fire to someone's hat when passing directly through a group of people and then immediately running away is not cool or remotely fun RP as it allows for zero reaction and becomes unrealistic.
- Read the server rules!
- Read the server rules again. There have been times a character tries to do something at larger events which is not only disruptive but godmodding NPCs or even breaking laws. Please do not be the one who puts a whole event to halt just because your character wanted to steal a purse from someone but then OOCly cries foul when ten people try to apprehend him/her.
Comedy can really lighten up RP sometimes but respect for the situation and keeping in mind that actions have consequences are quite important things. I am by no means saying that all comedy characters are bad but I have in my time, seen quite bad ones and also very disruptive ones. I really loathe to call in a DM because I cannot reason with someone either ICly or OOCly. If you are the only one laughing at your own character and no one else is, please do re-think it. We share server space with a variety of players (and characters) and thinking selfishly does not create a good environment for anyone.

on this i agree
amusing characters are amusing, when played in the manner suggested above
ppl that play funny pcs, need do so responsibly. come to think of it, the same can be said of those that play evil pcs

i never stated playing responsibly lies on funny and evil pcs alone
those types of characters are just more difficult to play responsibly

Not funny!
Randall started off as an attempt to joke funny/annoying RP, but I enjoyed it so much that after a few weeks I've put some more depth in it.
And then got banned for it...and then brought back as a female of the same character.

I would not pull evil RP into it, as I cannot see how it relates and those kind of discussions never turn out well.

You are right of course, Chambordin, that it should apply to all. I find that jokey characters tend to be more troll-like than anyone else and care less about overstepping lines. They might not think of themselves as trolls but others often do
Sticking in character is always the ideal but some people have been so disruptive it has not been impossible. Anyway, I just wanted to offer some pointers to people who might have got concerned if they played a character who they thought came across as too jokey.

There are also Characters that are disruptive by their nature. But if that is played with purpose and accommodating to those that do or do not react to it in-character themselves, then no problems.
It is a truly "living" server if the environment is one that we accept we cannot direct nor decide, the interactions and reactions (to a greatest extent).

I think all of my characters stay comedic in some way.
Brent is crazy
John is kinda a sarcastic cynical jerk
and Ian was funny because he was way too serious about protecting Jan
